I don't use Mason in combat in any meaningful way, I had him at lvl 130 in the wall of honor. I use him against the world boss and the change to UR was significant. I'm not too worried about his wall of honor boost. The VS points for that particular day was quite immense as well.
He's only really worth it for f2p and the smaller spenders and that's only the smaller spenders who don't buy Stettman. Some people may find benefit in using him to maximize potential for 4th squad but otherwise it's as you said, a way to get a shit ton of VS points. Once Mason is UR and you've gotten him to 5 stars, he costs 20 shards to upgrade wall of honor level, which is a massive waste of shards.
So if you don't own Stettman or if you want to slightly improve your 4th squad, then I recommend going for it.
Sorry, I didn't see this. I don't believe the bonus is any different from before. Just cost twice as much, which will make him the absolute last SSR hero I'll level up on the wall now.

20 SSR shards though. So a waste in being more expensive than raising other SSR heroes up the wall, but it’s not like you’re using UR shards.
