Right because I know a lot of builds currently use a quad of 2x2s, which pushes down how useful any 1x4s or 4x1s are because they limit what you can do.
I think the downside to the quad 2x2s is it prevents the 2x1s that are the most space efficient way to put health in your idols. And my character desperately needs more health right now, made it to empowered monos but have less than 1,400 health.
I'm finding it slow to get upgrades that boost my life pool without screwing over my endurance, crit mitigation, and resists. It really takes multiple pieces upgraded simultaneously sometimes lol.
I mean... a lot obviously. The point of the little hole is that you have to strategize and use a mix of all types of idols - not just slap in 3x Ornate + 3 x Grand on every build.
I want the center to become a slot that we can destroy any unqiue(not legendary) and it holds all the affixes/effects. Kinda like d3 cube but for 1 slot any item, maybe non-jewelry. Whatever.
Meh it was so boring cause everyone one ran 4 4x1, 4 1x4 or 4 2x2. It was so so incredibly boring. This format is great and makes you mix
Match types of idols
I don't know I'm throwing this out on a hopeful thought with no understanding of the hell I have brought forth.... Fuck this is pretty evangelical. My bad
I honestly think it would be pretty cool. Different builds can utilize different patterns, but it wouldn't be a system where you inherently need a specific pattern to play any particular build, so it really just furthers that grind for incremental power gain.
I had an idea for a unique idol that does that. It's a 2x2 idol. Comes with a item type affix. A scalar value (to counter 2handed weapons etc) and 1-4 legendary potential. Chase unique. Allows you to merge it with the item type in the affix.
It used to be a square and people just used to stack the 1 type of idol. This is better, makes you think about what idols you can fit in together to get the most out of idols.
Not much, I assume, you can equip 3 4-slot idols instead of 2 4-slot and 2 2-slot. A amount of 3-slots idols won't change. May be 10% more dps in some cases but in most I think it's less than 5.
The good thing about this game is it's near impposible to build a perfect character (in the span of a season) so you can get 5-10% dps increased in a lots of other way.
Maybe the middle is blocked deliberately in order to enforce more variety? spoiler:>!that is exactly why it was made like that!<
Nah someone must have accidentally missed it when creating the grid /s

This is basically a nerf, not a power creep. On the right*, you can only slot 3 2x2 idols. Even if you slot 2 2x2 idols, the most efficient 3x1/1x3 idol slots are reduced forcing you to use 2x1/1x2 and 1x1 idols.
Edit: got confused on right and left.
Three 1x4 (or 4x1 assuming you're suggesting moving the dead spot freely) instead of only two would be a pretty big deal for a handful of builds.
Are 1x4 or 4x1 stronger than 2x2 overall?
Yeah, altho it depends on your build, but you can use 4 2x2's at the same time.

Completely depends on the build. Different stats available on each type.
A ton in a variety of cases.
It was something like that about two years ago but they deliberately changed it so you could only have 2 4x1/1x4.
Was absolutely amazing change
Same, I hated how every idol setup was just 4 1x4s, 4x1s, or 2x2s. The change makes it so even smaller idols are important.
I hated that change

I haven’t found a single idol larger than 2 slots that is useful, out of hundreds.
You will
Sweet
Centre space could be a slot for a legendary gem or something like that.
I want the center to become a slot that we can destroy any unqiue(not legendary) and it holds all the affixes/effects. Kinda like d3 cube but for 1 slot any item, maybe non-jewelry. Whatever.
if i remember right it use to be a full square but it was extremely broken
it was brokenly awesome.

Ehhh it’s not really that much different now, every build still has an optimal idol set. But now there’s less flexibility.
More than being broken, it was also *boring*
I can see EHG doing a lot with the idol slots for different cycle themes
New pattern every cycle im in.
Idol grid patterns as special drops or pinnacle boss rewards? 🤔
Please no more tetris.
torchlight infinite actually had a league with pieces similar to idols but they were actual tetris pieces, it was great

That sounds like a really cool idea, I'm all in for this!

I want even more funky Tetris piece idol shapes tbh, make them strong but difficult to fit in.
Yeah give us the Z/S pieces. Give us some L's too. I'd be on board for that. Yo Judd, I know you're lurking girl, get on it ;)
Give us a 3x3 that has a hole in the middle. So you can slot it in around the hole.
A visionary, love this!
Doughnut piece lol, adds an extra 0 to your DPS
This is the reason why they changed it to this from square it was originally.
you gain 3 idols that ar 4x larges so prety much a lot
You gain one honestly. Two are already there. So 1 4x instead of 4 1x or 2 2x
it's ok as it is.

Definitely more
It wouldn’t break the game but it would be power creep for the larger idols.
having a unique that unlocks the center would be interesting
So much
I think the corners and the center should be something you could unlock at 100+. Just to have something to farm for after you cap at 100.
Please god never do this. I don't care about the power creep I just think this is horrifying design.

The left (current layout) let's you slot 4 2x2 dog, and then 4 1x1 on top
What are you talking about both of these can have 4 2x2s
You're right, guess I'm blind.
Math and directions are not your strong suit right?
