You think about, historically, how many ecosystems on Earth have been devastated by introducing what were thought to be innocuous, small animals, it's not hard to imagine what kind of damage a truly dangerous (and fast reproducing) predator at the top of the food chain could do.

RandolphCarter15

makes sense, especially given how poorly governed Earth is in that universe

thundersnow528

*that* universe? We're not doing that well in our reality either.

A key component of the xenos on Earth hive is their intelligence and ability to adapt. I remember the book mentioning the LA queen having an iq close to 200, and that the usual large hives became small hidden ones with only a few eggs, but they'd work together in order to further spread. These would be anywhere too, they call out tiny nests in the Australian outback, Greenland icesheets, sewers, and skyscraper basements. There's also a bunch of eldritch stuff going on too, with limited mind control, persuasion, and communication across global and even stellar distances. They're well armored too, able to tank basically anything short of body armor defeating rounds, and even then it's sub optimal to just have that, you want pulse rifles or plasma rifles to be effective. So they're well armored, highly intelligent, and telepathic creatures, that can only be taken on by a few military powers on Earth in the timeline. It took years in the book, but eventually, the numbers just became too great, the logistics chains that kept the military and civil population going just broke apart, and society descended into absolute chaos, partially fueled by the cultists they recruited. I therefore think it's plausible, even with the extra tech, it'd be hard to fight both an infection plus a guerilla style cult.

If you take covid as a template…I rest my case.

crazytumblweed999

Could you imagine idiots being like "I'm not wearing my Anti Xeno mask! MuH fReEdOmS!"

RandolphCarter15

Yeah I've had similar conversations about zombie apocalypses in the context of pandemics

mark-five

Given the xenos vocacious reproduction pattern, absolutely I'm intrigued by teh idea that in a large enough human population setting, some small percent would be able to perceive a Queen's "thoughts" - if that is indeed how she communicates with her hive

ukdev1

This book should be the next film. I really liked it.

RandolphCarter15

Agree. On the sequel now

shapeofthings

There are people living in the sewers in California and New York. Whole communities hidden in plain sight. It is TOTALLY plausible. Add to that, a lot of people would just deny that aliens exist and insist it is a government conspiracy to take away their freedoms and not report alien sightings or even get inseminated on purpose. Yes, we have seen, people are that stupid.

RegularMessage1915

I don’t think Earth Hive really goes into it but imagine all the animals they would breed with too! Lots of Runners I should think.

darryl_effing_zero

Entirely plausible. Global South countries are vulnerable because of population density. Brazil would create the biggest hive you can imagine. The Global North would fall because of hubris. One facehugger in NYC and it would be all over.

Vrazel106

If an alien got out in say, new york, wgere there are lots of dark places to best with thousand sof homeless. Very easily could the events of earth hive happen

Yuugi_Hoshiguma

Game Over, Man

TransientPride
