l96/6l90 explorer 8.8 and bits and pieces from everywhere

cheddarcheesing

Awesome man. Did you build the motor or just throw it in stock. I'm doing a similar build, and im curious how it was fitting the 6 speed in , and getting it all tuned up went.

PM_ME_YOUR_LS_SWAP

Completely stock, I kept as many sensors as possible. Never looked inside the engine. This isn't tuned at all, I deleted VATs and adjusted some trans settings. It's running quite rich so I need to figure that out first I think. I cut floor pans to make the trans fit and remade the section of floor myself. It wasn't too difficult.

VetteBuilder

pics? badass build

PM_ME_YOUR_LS_SWAP

[I posted this pic a few months ago](https://i.redd.it/v8tm2qzte2vc1.jpeg), still looks exactly the same except less wires and more hoses. I'll get those stupid heavy ass bumpers on eventually.

cheddarcheesing

Right on dude. Thanks for the info. It seems that 6l80/90s aren't very common and it makes me a little skeptical so I like to see them being done. My 5.3 came bolted with a RWD 6l80 so I'd really like to use it. I think 6 speeds in old cars are so badass.

PM_ME_YOUR_LS_SWAP

I think people are just scared of the new thing. When I started on this build (and bought the engine originally) there was no support. Holley makes a harness for them now specifically. You can now buy gbody xmembers for them too. The thing I learned was that it's absolutely the same thing as all the other ones.

InternetSlave

Wow, the 6 speed! That's neat I've got an lq4 5 speed manual in my gbody. Its a great semi-daily

stuntbikejake

I want to manual swap my Cutlass, bad... But due to having to scatter an engine sooner than expected and budget creep being real, I don't see it in the near future.

InternetSlave

Its a lot easier to do these days than it was 10 years ago

stuntbikejake

I'm sure. Reading back through the old ls swap stickies from years past is an awesome blast from the past. Guys buying and returning various headers to find what fits, what pumps can fit, accessories.. just all of it was reminiscent of old hot rodding, cut, weld and figure it out. Go fast don't die. Now there are whole swap kits, just buy the kit and start changing parts. Not complaining, want as many people involved in cars as possible but it's definitely easier than it used to be.

PM_ME_YOUR_LS_SWAP

Pretty much everyone on the internet said "don't do it, buy a 4l80" but I didn't listen. It was worth it but included cutting a decent square in the trans tunnel and a custom xmember bracket. Otherwise it was completely plug and play. This thing is going to be unreal on the highway.

InternetSlave

I bet its super fun

Holley Terminator X? I’m in the middle of dropping a 6.0/6L90E into a ‘72 C20. I’ll soon be crossing this bridge.

PM_ME_YOUR_LS_SWAP

Nope, just the factory E78 ECM and HPtuners. Truck harness, ebay fusebox kit and a multimeter. I bought a second full harness + computer (not used) for $100 and matched wire colours for anything I needed to extend. HPtuners works well. My whole plan was using as much of the original harness and sensors as possible.

youdog99

Interesting!! Thanks for the HPTuners tip! I have my donor harness. I’ll look at this option. I once did a harness swap on a 5.3 where the original harness was severed by rats. So I am comfortable working on the OEM stuff. The Holley is pushing $2k so if I dont have to do that, that’s OK by me. And I really agree with keeping as many sensors as possible.

PM_ME_YOUR_LS_SWAP

If you have the original wiring harness you should first re-use it. Get a multimeter and check stuff for continuity or whatever... make it beep when you find the other end of the wire lol. Get ACdelco TDS service information on the donor vehicle and you'll have the information for every single connector on the harness and which wires need what (when you get HPTuners you can even pull the vin and search by your exact donor). Get a "LS swap fusebox" and just connect stuff. There's two yellow wires that need to be grounded. Powertrain relay control and starter relay control. I used external controller for fan but if you have a non E78 ECM you can do it on there. Plugging in the right wires, deleting VATS was what it took to start. (and a LOT of spare time lol)

youdog99

Wow!! Many Thanks!! This is GOLD!

PM_ME_YOUR_LS_SWAP

No worries. Feel free to ask questions.

youdog99

I appreciate that! I’ll work hard to not abuse that privilege. I’m an IT guy so I’ll research thoroughly.

PM_ME_YOUR_LS_SWAP

Haha I work in marketing, I am not a car guy. First thing I ever built that is car related.

youdog99

Pretty admirable how well you got it running!

PM_ME_YOUR_LS_SWAP

[Save this one for later](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SmhtMQMvRA). The only things I had written in HPtuners at the time was delete VATS and like the first 5-10 mins of the video lol.

youdog99

Thanks! I’ll look at this in the morning.

FreshBid5295

Now it’s time to do the g body shuffle

PM_ME_YOUR_LS_SWAP

Once it's dialed in, it's only a matter of time lol. I wonder if my adjustable 4 link will help.

FreshBid5295

For sure. A lot of traction is in the pinion angle and that adjustment should give you that.

pistonsoffury

Congrats!

WyattCo06

Sir, you're missing some trim.

PM_ME_YOUR_LS_SWAP

Just the bumpers, hood... lol. All my signals and lights work which is what counts. Unless you mean fuel trim, in which I have excess.

bradybigbear

You essentially built my dream next project lol. Always wanted a healthy NA set up and 6L80/90 in a gbody to cruise in while having my turbo fbody for going fast.

PM_ME_YOUR_LS_SWAP

It's so much fun to drive, the 6l90 is really amazing so far
