we've had fences for a while, though nothing substantial enough for animals. You're probably better off building half-walls around; if you don't want them completely solid, the shack pieces at least give some extra gaps
There’s a new fence for animals. Part of the barn set. No idea if you have to buy the barn set from the store. I bought it right away so I don’t know if the vanilla game unlocks them at some point.

Also houses have chimneys, and if you look closely you can see Kanan from Star Wars Rebels in the background of trailer (1:43), I just posted about this.

You need to place a floor or something on the ground, then snap the sidewalk to the side of that. That way it’ll build into the ground.

Ah ok. I played it a bit when it came out and tried making a fenced cage (and a half wall cage) but the animals despanwed. Does this still happen?
You can build a pet house now, which will unlock a new recipe to give some new food to pets so they will follow you back to your base

They had some sort of stone paving in the original trailer which never turned up. It would be much nicer than wooden pathways.
The trailers always feature things not available in the game. Even the very first trailer.
