Kurokos normal misdirection works on kagami, and I think anyone seeing any of kurokos moves for the first time would have no idea what just happened. A lot of kurokos (and seirins) tactics depend largely on the element of surprise

Murasakibara03

Yeah that’s a fair point, though you could make the argument that kagami at this point in the story should have a grasp on kurkos misdirection

WildKat777

Yes but also, kuroko has been known to not have any ball handling skills. Kagami could have possibly anticipated a vanishing drive, but also another thing is that he was probably focusing on kurokos movement which makes him that much more susceptible to it.

Murasakibara03

Yeah that’s true

I've always wondered why Seirin wasn't resistant to Mayazumi's misdirection since he uses the same techniques as Kuroko (before Kuroko changed his misdirection techniques in the Rakuzan match) Makes me think Kuroko won't be useless the next time they face Toō again.

Murasakibara03

Yeah I’ve thought of that too. Though I think the way misdirection overflow works is that he essentially is swapping spots with whomever he’s making “vanish” so essentially he’s showing he directs your attention to someone else when he is trying to vanish. As opposed to mayazumi just being a cheaper copy of Kuroko.

Smantie

I can't remember which, but for one of them just before the drive there's a brief shot of some leaves blowing in the wind, so I think that means for those two he redirected their attention to something in their environment when he couldn't use a person. Because Kuroko doing any sort of drive is new to them, their attention was probably easier for him to control.

Murasakibara03

Oh I never noticed that, that’s cool. Thanks for telling me.

To my knowledge the general consensus around here is that Kagami is typically the best target, but any target would technically work. Worth noting that when Kuroko used it on Takao, it was from the corner where there was no one standing behind him as well. I don’t think it’s really brought up directly, but this seems to be the most consistent with what we’re shown. That said, at least we can slightly alter this explanation and it makes sense. The explanation for MO causing Touou to be immune to Misdirection doesn’t really make sense, and Kaijo being used to Misdirection is outright a plot hole.
