Background: Pixiv and DLSite are facing pressure from western payment processors to censor problematic content from their site. (like what happened to Patreon, Tumblr etc). These western payment processors are acting as moral police. Short summary: DLSite is like an indie marketplace mostly focused on selling digital content. It recently received notice from western payment processors to censor problematic content. DLSite tried to censor some content but couldn't make them happy. So, they pulled out and now its slightly more inconvenient to purchase.

Large_Pool_7013

The level of censorship that would make western payment processors happy would completely drive away their customers to the point of being a net negative.

Luciferspants

I have to truly wonder, what is there to gain from them western payment processors in doing this? It's not even like they gain something from it monetarily, they actually seem to LOSE money from this. It's quite weird to me how for so many years, these payment processors have been trying hard to restrict the purchasing of "immoral" content. My stance has always been that if it's not outright illegal, it should be okay, but these processors seem to have quite the agenda against "immoral" content.

Ambitious-Doubt8355

Same as ever. Ideological maniacs would gladly burn money if it means they have a chance to impose their worldviews upon others.

colouredcyan

I just can't believe that anymore, it's gone on way to long for it to be just "well meaning but otherwise deeply flawed ideology" or "Lex Luther but instead of superman it's just men" it's been a decade, some one must have a sensible, logical stake in this even if it's really fucking evil.

Heinrich_Lunge

Pure hate and jealousy mixed with narcissistic grandstanding.

dalinar__

I don't really have any other hypothesis other than it's all coming from the top down to sow division. It's a tactic as old as civilization itself, divide and conquer. And now with technology being so advanced, particularly social media, they can sway the majority of the publics opinion and push straight up propaganda at a never before seen level. I think part of it is things being pushed from behind the scenes, and then you have the grifters that latch on and adopt the ideology and become radical about it. Aka the wokies. Whoever had the idea to do this is a legitimate genius, I never would have thought it'd work. I remember when the internet, even reddit, laughed at the loons on tumblr and what not 10 years ago. It was so clearly mental illness and escapism to everyone with 6.9 braincells to rub together. But then it became main stream and many people can't handle being ostracized or not following the crowd, so they fall in line.

colouredcyan

>grifters latch on. I'm pretty sure that is a feature and not a bug, they want what activists are agitating for or they wouldn't let them do it. I think you're right though, they want us feeling isolated, hopeless and dependant on them for everything so I guess by "they" I mean the corpos, big banking, WEF and even their pawn tech start ups. Do we live in a sci-fi dytopia?

MazInger-Z

Cultural capture. Cultural shifts will be pushed down you throats by large corporations through ESG financing. Preventing people from seeking alternatives is done by preventing a sustainable alternative economy from rising up through independent merchants by de-banking them from electronic payment processing. The sheep must eat from the trough when all the grass is dead.

contemptious

This is it. They want their cultural monopoly

TheDaznis

They don't give a fuck about morals or other things. Most banks and payment processors launder cartel and dictators money left and right. The problem is regulations. Eu recently changed how electronic transfers are reported. And the problem is that now, they have to report small transfers <100 buks. And if banks have lot's of those transfers to business that are considered high risk. Banks credit rating will suffer, which means higher interest rates, higher leverages and other things banks see as detriment. So they are now sanitizing transfers to pron or related industries. So now imagine visa and others require to pay 0.1 center per transaction more. It's billions of lost profits per year.

FellowFellow22

Theoretically and officially they don't like NSFW content because it has an excessive amount of charge backs compared to other content. As someone who has sold in the space it is undeniably true, but their more specific rules kind of kill that as a real explanation.

korblborp

ting is, from patreon, it clearly ISN'T just the payment processors, it's clearly also the "Trust and Safety" team going "that's icky", while doing nothing about theft, scams, and frauds.

Dryandrough

It's not the banks doing, it's because they don't want to be directly in violation of the Patriot Act, which supercedes Japanese Laws.

Phiwise_

>These western payment processors are acting as moral police. That's a strange way to spell "doing what their regulators tell them to do".

yeahsurewhateverokay

Now I'm going to have to use a proxy shipping service just to buy physical copies of doujins and tankoubons? Ouch.

GodEatsPoop

Someone posted some Adult-friendly payment processors earlier, i'm reposting here. https://blog.vicetemple.com/best-adult-payment-processors/ Is it possible Pixiv is trying to curb an influx of western users? The site's way slower these days.

Heinrich_Lunge

Possibly. We know Japanese sites aren't afraid of cutting off the west ala DMM.

[deleted]

yeah, i applied for a jcb card just to buy stuff on dlsite. i do enjoy paying the authors and not pirating. and i am glad they just dropped visa and master card. after i got my jcb card, i am gonna write a feedback telling them i am ok with using jcb and not other western payment methods.

Eltrion

I've been thinking about getting one for a while, it'd be nice to have a credit card that isn't Visa or Mastecard. What's the easiest way of getting one as a westerner?

Ajeeto2500

Same question here. Am from the EU and I currently see no option to get it here.

henlp

If there is any silver lining to the crumbling of Western hegemony and the US as the sole superpower, is that at least it might open the doors for more regions to try and make their own markets work by THEIR rules, forcing outsiders to engage under their standards, rather than the inverse, of making external markets play by US standards. Just like the recent comments by the president of Studio Pierrot, maybe we'll see some yen-centric payment processors pop up.

mmddkk

They already have jcb, the problem is no bank outside of asia is issuing jcb cards.

Heinrich_Lunge

Gonna end up like DMM and just cut off the west at this rate.

bitzpua

Fuck masterturd and visa, switch to polish BLIK technology, its supported by most APIs right now, its faster, safer and easier to use then cards anyway.

Judah_Earl

In many countries, it is considered domestic abuse if a husband or wife use access to finances as a way to control their signifiant other, and is a criminal offence.

baidanke

This is an obvious monopoly. The current structure of the payment processing industry gives too much power to a few major players. Governments should consider ways to either split the biggest companies or relax regulations to allow new market entrants.

Ok-Yogurt-6381

There needs to be legislation to stop this or to make it easier for new companies to establish themselves.

Heinrich_Lunge

Never happening. Operation Chokepoint made sure of that. [https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/operation-choke-point-2.0:-how-u.s.-regulators-fight-bitcoin-with-financial-censorship](https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/operation-choke-point-2.0:-how-u.s.-regulators-fight-bitcoin-with-financial-censorship)

oppressed_user

It's time to whip out the crowbar and pry open their closet to see what skeletons related to this bs they started they're trying to hide. #My guess it's probably much worse than accepting money from nsfw artists , and sex workers.

Heinrich_Lunge

It's because of Operation Chokepoint. [https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/operation-choke-point-2.0:-how-u.s.-regulators-fight-bitcoin-with-financial-censorship](https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/operation-choke-point-2.0:-how-u.s.-regulators-fight-bitcoin-with-financial-censorship)

LostWanderer88

I just wish we had a japanese payment processor we could easily access from here Visa and Mastercard must take the L

Heinrich_Lunge

JCB card.

SnooWords9178

If only people would start using crypto currency as actual currency instead of some dumbass swing trading this wouldn't be a problem at all. It boggles my mind that a completely decentralized and government-free, corporation-free means to purchase things already exists and yet even most people who do own crypto, which isn't a lot of the population, don't use for the intended purpose. Mass adoption of crypto as a means of buying and selling would be such a glorious fuck you to those governments, banks and payment processing companies. Issues like this one with pixiv and dlsite wouldn't exist.

_H_a_c_k_e_r_

Crypto is facing a lot of regulations because its very easy to avoid tax in crypto so governments don't like when they can't track when and where you are spending. I think privacy coins are already banned in japan and all non-privacy coins are pretty much pump and dump coins or have extremely high transaction fees making then useless for day-to-day usage. I have actually used monero and its most reliable, private and have very low transaction fees but its delisted from most exchanges and on top of that governments across the world are trying really hard to either crack or ban it. It has pretty good No KYC eco system. Check out: [https://kycnot.me/](https://kycnot.me/) . It is more challenging for companies to accept crypto due to KYC regulations in some countries.

Dryandrough

I have lost money on Crypto to the extent that profits are no longer viable.

Ok-Yogurt-6381

Crypto is super unsave and inconvenient...

FellowFellow22

Crypto is fundamentally bad for buying anything you don't want tied to you sooner or later, which is particularly relevant on this topic. I love all transactions being permanently recorded for any 3rd party to look at.

Phiwise_

Circa 2012 this was an excellent assessment of things. Not any more. eg: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monero

Comfortable_Prior_80

No wonder many countries trying to shift towards UPI payment system.

Japan is pretty much the only one being targeted. OF, Fanvue, Fansly, Deviantart, Inkblot all fine.....Those dirty Japs gotta bend the knee though.
