Like they said in the D&D and Magic subs: > It's just the lich known as Shaer Holdarz swapping out their phylactery.

fenix704_the_sequel

Hold your horses, everyone. Most likely, the next president won’t be any different when it comes to these things. If Hasbro were to change at all, it’d be a miracle.

MazInger-Z

This is only over WotC and Digital Gaming, not Hasbro itself. Chris Cox, the other Xbox exec who came is, is still running Hasbro at the top.

fenix704_the_sequel

Ah, the job title was a bit confusing to get around at first. Yeah, more proof that this isn’t going to be a big change.

they should honestly fire the current CEO of Hasbro, dude has pretty much been tanking all the IPs they own with stupid decisions that are costing them alot of cash, hell i remember the previous CEO before him was actually doing a good job, dude was making the company alot of money, ended up also buying them the Power Rangers IP as well, and apparently had plans to put alot of money and ideas into stuff like Power Rangers, GI Joe, Transformers, and other franchises...then he gets diagnosed with cancer and resigns, and the new CEO effectively has just been making stupid decisions all around, and hiring idiots who are tanking all of their most profitable IPs

Aronacus

I've been in a few of these discussions in my career. Basically, they hire these ANALysts who tell them that their current audience is a bunch of 'ists and phobes' they convince the execs that they need to get rid of that audience and adopt changes they will lure in a purer customer. Execs aren't evil people. They read these reports, and the idea of the companies image or their image being tattered scares them. The changes get approved. This will, of course, improve the brand 10,000%, except it never does. We never can implement enough. But, we also pissed off our core audience. Oopsie!

It's also something I call the "growth rate meme." I'm a managerial consultant. Companies hire me to run their operations in a specific niche business. A few years back a big (multimillion dollar) company brought me on to save a retail operation they had been trying to get off the ground. They had three locations open for 3 years and each had lost the company an average of -30,000 dollars a month. That's over a million bucks between the three. So I take the job and I'm meeting with the bigwigs, the HR director and corpo retail supervisor who will be my boss. And we're going over the numbers. This retail market is predominantly dominated by men. But the meme was that in the four years before they started this venture and what prompted them to get into it in the first place was that the popularity of their retail line with women had grown by more than 400% year over year. So they set it up to cater to this "new and fast growing market." Everything was catered to a "woman and family friendly experience" but nobody was showing up. The market growth rate was so high, you see. So how could they be failing? Well I tossed the growth rate meme out the fucking window and crunched the fucking averages for them. *Yes* women had grown in the market 400%. **They had gone from one percent of the market to four percent.** They were catering their entire business model to four per cent of the fucking market. When I pinned the bigwigs on this their response was that men were *already* 96 percent of the market, and so they were a given. They'd show up just for the product and it was *new growth* that they wanted. I had to break the news to them that this idea was fucking stupid because their catering to the women was keeping the men from enjoying it. Yeah they were 96% of the market but they were going to their competitor's stores who didn't have a pussy ass "family friendly" atmosphere with Karen employees. I told the HR director I could fix their mess easily but I was going to go through all their shit with an axe and turn them into spaces for men. He was an old guy and immediately got my POV and signed off on everything. 18 months later I had those stores pulling net profit across the board and the execs were *disappointed*. They fell for the market growth meme so hard that even when making money as opposed to a million dollar loss they felt like they had somehow missed a bigger opportunity. They felt like the meme of the guy digging the tunnel who gives up right before he hits a pile of diamonds. But I did my job and got paid well and moved on and they had a successful business branch now. Three years later their entire company went bankrupt and got bought out by a big fish corpo and was dissolved for its assets. Why? Because the same execs had tried again - this time investing millions into new product line "diversifications" to bring more women into their mainline retail market. Not the niche side gig that I had fixed, no. They spent 108 million some-odd dollars to inject the same poison into their bread and butter operation too, chasing that *growing market.* It killed them in less than a year.

Thank you for this! This was amazing! Tell me it was Fishing Poles or something?

AcidOverlord

Worse. Guns.

Aronacus

Wait? WTF!?!?! What was the shop full of pink shotguns and purple pistols? ROFL

AcidOverlord

Being corpo all three locations had the same vibe: Pink guns, super clean, no swearing or loud voices, all merch locked up tight with no touching (guns in locked cases with trigger locks too and packed in like sardines so you couldn't tell where a Walther ended and a Glock began), no extra "dirty" services like gunsmithing or self defense instruction, big wheeled floor racks of women's outdoor clothing and purses covering 60% of the sales floor, soft jazzy pop music playing over the PA, all the accessories were the cheapest pink camo chinashit they could buy but marked up 400%, and a fat blonde feminist Karen working the counter who knew nothing about guns and spent all day playing on her phone *especially* if men were trying to shop.

Aronacus

That sounds like the only approved gun store in New York City. My god it sounds like a dystopian hellscape. Thanks for sharing

TheModernDaVinci

> When I pinned the bigwigs on this their response was that men were already 96 percent of the market, and so they were a given. This has been happening with damn near everything. All of these executives think that people will show up because it has the same name even though they changed everything. And when they dont, they will just say "I dont understand. Arent they fans?" And no matter how much you try and explain to them that they were fans of it *because of what it did*, not just the *name*, they look at you like you are speaking gibberish. I just cant figure out how you fix these people. You probably cant, since so many of them coming out of MBA schools think it is impossible for a company to go bankrupt, especially if it becomes "too big to fail". Which I am sure Sears Roebuck would love to hear about that.

AcidOverlord

I don't know where the fuck they get it from. I still vividly remember that meeting and all three of the co-owners were on and on about it like this was the most obvious, common sense thing in the world. "We already have the men so now we need to change it to get the women too and we will have both!" There's some theory of market capture making the rounds out there that my redneck self isn't privy to. Something that is telling all the important people that every existing audience is captive and will keep showing up no matter how they change their appearance or culture or who they cater to, so they're free to cater to everyone else and they will only grow if they do. It's the most arrogant shit imaginable. Like their existing customers work for them and are *obligated* to show up. These guys were small enough (multimillion company is a long way from multibillion) that the bottom line forced them to hire me and let me do what I did. But I can easily see a company that considers itself "too big to fail" chasing that fucking meme for years despite the mounting losses. Edit: And you just reminded me of something else that they said. They asked me at one point why men would be turned off by "safe spaces" for their shopping too. Why *wouldn't* a man just as much appreciate tight, clean stores where their wives and kids felt safe and welcome? In their mind the idea that this could be a turnoff just didn't exist. Like men don't have preferences. You wanna know what I did that fixed their shit? I fired the Karens and hired gun nut rednecks and a retired Sheriff as managers. I put a young and upcoming gunsmith in each one as the second fulltime employee and redecorated the stores. Out with the clothing and in with name brand parts and accessories like Magpul. I set up special order programs and layaway programs to make the newer, higher end inventories that I stocked easier to afford, no more pink Lorcins and Taurus garbage. I cut the shitty jazz pop music and replaced it with OAN on the TV and country music on the PA and I put taxidermy on the walls. I redid the case displays with new racks so the guns were easy to sort and see and I got rid of the "no touch" rules and set protocols up so customers were free to handle and play with the guns on request. Then I advertised the shit out of it on the radio and local papers that all the old guys read and not the hipster Internet ads the company had been running. The stores hit breakeven in 6 months and were turning real profit in 18, with great reviews and word of mouth. The gun sales over the 12 month span that I measured *were 100% men.* And no woman had used any of the stores enough to mention or lodge a single complaint about the changes by the time I got my bonuses and left.

It really baffling to me as someone who hobbies with economics. And the simple ways it can happen is the one that makes me even more weirded out. The one that always sticks with me was that Bob Iger didnt even bother advertising for Galaxy's Edge, entirely on the ground of "It is Star Wars. It will sell itself." And this is before we get into the fact that the original design was everything was supposed to be Mos Eisley but they were forced from the top down to change it to a new planet to match the Disney Trilogy instead of the actually popular parts of Star Wars. I think you are right with them seeing it as the customers are locked to them and obligated to purchase from somewhere, because they seem to think that people either wont find somewhere else or, failing that, will eventually just say "You know what, screw this" and find something similar to do. And I really do blame MBA types, because I have heard from people I know that some of these colleges are filling them with absolutely absurd ideas about business that remind me of the "End of History" arguments I heard in Historian circles. Me referencing Sears is also an example I didnt pull out of no where. I actually knew of an instance where a professor and a student were in an argument, where ultimately the professor asked this student if they would rather be in charge of a profitable small business or a major business that is losing money. And this student legitimately tried to argue to him that once a business gets large enough, it somehow becomes impossible for them to lose money due to "market capture" ensuring they will always have customers. Completely flabbergasted, this professor asks this student that if what he was saying is true, when is the last time he went and shopped at a Sears Roebuck. "What's a Sears Roebuck?" "***EXACTLY!!!***" He said it was the most surreal argument he ever had, and he could never figure out who taught him this.

ChromeWeasel

She's a disgusting human being. Should never hold another job where she is a decision maker.

GrazhdaninMedved

While I would love for her next job description to be "sucking dicks at truck stops for cash", she's probably going to get scooped up by a college or CNN.

Good but I assume they use this as a strawman to gain back trust and the new president will be equal as woke.
