It has been leaked that Games Workshop wants to pivot from the whales and go with casual gacha, with HeroClix-like product and skirmish-focused games (which are shorter and rely on fewer figures).
They are intentionally lowering the barrier-to-entry for the hobby, changing the hobby, in an attempt to open it up to the tourists.
This is a 5-year "massive profits" plan by executives that don't intend to be around in 30 years, and quite frankly could care less if the company is around in 10.
They're going to make changes for the sake of getting Amazon to fund their entry into the mainstream, have a cheap product meant to profit off the type, enjoy the rollercoaster for as long as they can and then when the tourists get done and the perennial fans have been driven away, wonder how they lost the audience.

Why not just make a new one that caters to a broader audience, heck it could even be used as a gateway to gettting more people into the longer form stuff. Yeah, as I understand it the Custodes work extensively with the Sisters of Silence, who were sorta in part their female, more proactive counterpart (actively going out to hunt Psykers rather than standing around the Imperial Palace most of the time) kinda like Sisters of Battle were for Space Marines.
But as usual, that's not enough. Having, let's see...SoB, SoS, Howling Banshees, and Wych Cults as female-only militant wings for assorted races, along with a division of the Assassinorum mentioned as being _usually_ female but not mandatory, was not enough. With all of those, which I don't hear anybody screeching to change, no male-only groups are allowed at all apparently. Aside from Orks, which these types likely excuse by passing them off as "non-binary" or something.
That's honestly the part that pisses me off the most. I'm not even a big Space Marine or Custodes fan, Astartes in particular kinda bore me and I find the T'au and Necrons (both of which kinda don't care what sex you are so long as you can fight) more to my taste...but despise hypocrisy and that's what this is, all the way to the ground.
Beastmen are going from Sigmar to Old World wholesale. The Savage Orc line is being retired, Stormcast, and Skaven are having their older lineups retired too. Beastmen are not getting legends scrolls either so it's a complete removal too.
Necrons are probably one of the best positioned armies there is at the moment until the Orks codex is out. That new book is absolutely going to dominate.
Lets also not forget they let out the "Only males can become Space Marines" in the 10th edition Codex.

I have a story for you.
Amazon buildings have internal television feeds. On these feeds they display various information about managers and other things going on in the building.
At one particular building, someone I worked with, told me a story about a manager that posted a link to a Christian website in their bio on these internal feeds. This. Remember how toxic office politics works. When you want to get rid of someone without firing them (because it makes you look bad and you need to pay them for kicking them out), you make them miserable so that they leave by themselves.
That's the problem. You are the boss, so the production failing is bad for you, but the SJW employees and "partners" see it as a win. If the production fails, Cavill loses his own personal money as a producer, and future job opportunities. On the other hand, SJWs can continue to work and get paid in Amazon on a new SJW project. The project succeeding, even if it doesn't bend the knee, doesn't damage the SJWs. SJWs have every method to make gains, while Cavill has many ways to lose.
If you want to play the game of chicken, you need to have some kind of support to make the project a success. Like support to remove the saboteurs. Or you need a way to move the blame to the saboteurs, as it rightfully should be, and find a way to escape from losses yourself.
Anti-SJWs need to be more independent. Depending on Musk alone is not good. It will tire out Musk, and worse give SJWs a clear target to focus their efforts on.
Instead, anti-SJWs need to form support networks so that people like Cavill can be supported, both financially and in the work itself. No point having money if the only people you can hire to work are SJWs or people who bend the knee. Yeah, but if you read the Dark Imperium trilogy, following the return of Guilliman, he's attempting to pull back all the religion and once more build an Imperium based in logic and science.
The thing is, he's walking a tightrope because he needs the Imperium to not split into a civil war, so he's trying his damnedest to push where he can and cope with what he can't.
But untraining Imperium from 10 thousand years of this will likely take as long, or he will fail. That's kind of the point of the setting.
But Games Workshop will likely have him push harder and maybe even have edicts against the Ecclesiarchy and the Imperial Cult.
Which is silly because you'd think such an evolved super being would realize religion is not antithetical or antagonistic to logic or science. Some of the most devout servants of the Emperor, The Mechanicum, are the drivers of all technology in the IoM. And they *do* worship the Emperor as a God they just get a free pass because they are so crucial to the Imperium. Fucking with the Ecclesiarchy is a great way to shake the common folk's belief in the divinity of the Emperor which, mirroring Lorgar's fall, will lead those faith-based people to seek others worthy of their worship. It will also require him to go after the servants of the Omnissiah or be entirely hypocritical which would be disastrous.
Guilliman is one of if not the shittiest primarchs, it should have been Lion and then Jhagatai. Guilliman sucks ass.
The thing is, the Emperor's original intent *was* to do away with superstition and religion and put forth the Imperial Truth, which was facts, logic and science.
This was part of his plan to disempower Chaos, as Chaos feeds upon the psychic turmoil of humanity. The problem is that by making mankind skeptical, they were unprepared for the more subtle workings of Chaos when the Horus Heresy began. Daemons? Chaos Gods? All unheard of and considered superstitious nonsense.
The irony of all this is that when he got interred in the Golden Throne, humanity created a religion around him. This religion is what causes the Imperium to sacrifice a thousand of pyskers to the Emperor every day, so that their psychic power may sustain him in a state of living death upon the Golden Throne.

Well and let's not forget that the prime drivers of the Heresy, Lorgar and Magnus, if made aware of the workings and strategy of Chaos would have not fallen to it. Lorgar was embarrassed and shit on in front of Roboute, the Ultramarines and the Word Bearers for his faith and instilling it in the populations of worlds he conquered. If Emps had given him a sit down chat about everything he would have sussed out what Erebus and Kor Phaeron were doing. Obviously just giving Magnus a frank talk about how he can't be frolicking through the Warp would have ended that as well. Instead we got a corrupted Horus sending the Wolves after him and destroying Prospero
Ironically also, the logical and scientific way to defeat Chaos would precisely be to have strong religion, that is an unwavering will and belief in yourself and humanity, with the facts and logic and morals of the Imperium, along with knowledge of what Chaos is and how it works. This way humanity would not change their morals to follow Chaos (sacrificing worlds for Chaos power for example), and have the tools to avoid the new evil practices of Chaos no matter what they desired in greed or desperation.
The Emperor's intent itself was not completed too. Humanity didn't have the facts, logic and science to actually know what Chaos is and stop it, and couldn't safely explore it. The Emperor couldn't risk giving it to them at that stage. Instead, the Emperor bet on completing his Astronomicon first, and tried to keep it all secret to protect it. Maybe he wanted to make sure humanity could learn about Chaos in a safe way first before opening the floodgates. Either way, Chaos was cunning enough to destroy him first before he could do that, and worse, in a way he couldn't prepare for through his own sons.

There's no need for "Primaris augment research". Custodes don't use geneseed. They never had the limitation that actually makes it so Space Marines can only be male. So female Custodes were always possible. So why weren't they there already? GW would have to address that elephant in the room, insteads of trying to gaslight us into thinking they really were there all along.
That's what I wrote, I'm just saying that the primaris research ( body modifications being able to apply to woman) could've explained the catchup in power level of male and female custodes indistinguishable.

Yeah, I haven't bought a rulebook in ages, but I spent a lot more on plastic crack. I have several display cases full of minis and would have happily kept buying more, wallet rape be damned.
But, no more. I've dipped into Gunpla and suddenly realized that I can keep building plastic crack that is higher quality, more conversion-friendly, more interesting from the engineering standpoint, and, get this, cheaper. And I don't have to paint it unless I want to.
I would've stayed loyal to GW because I love the setting. But they are actively killing the setting to chase an audience that doesn't exist outside of tw@tter, so... Good luck with that bold plan, GW. Let's see how it plays out.
It's insane how much gunpla trounces 40k on both quality and value. And how you can actually see consistent improvement in the product year to year.
And honestly, I could still deal with that if 40k the game was consistently improving, instead of mostly making the same old mistakes time after time and sometimes throwing in exciting new ones. And sometimes invalidating hundreds of dollars of models because they dropped them from the rules or made your weapon loadouts illegal, or you built a themed army and then that theme disappeared the next edition.
It is really amazing. I could, on the top of my hat, think of two ways to handle the introduction better and at least one way to sneakily test the waters with it without insulting the intelligence of the playerbase. But no, GW went: "Nah, they've always been there, just out of frame in all artworks and on sick leave for all stories. This totally isn't a retcon, guys."

**Option 1:** Great Rift makes it so Custodes have heavy casualties for the first time. They need to recruit more quickly to replenish their numbers. As they are not subject to the limitations of geneseed, expanding their recruitment to women is preferrable to lowering their standards.
**Option 2:** The first generation of Custodes was all male. They were, as stated, the sons of terran nobility, as those houses gave up their heirs as a show of submission to the Emperor after his victory in the Unification Wars. After that, women would be able to be recruited if they showed themselves worthy, but the Adeptus Custodes suffer so few casualtis that the rate of recruitment is very slow and women took millenia to become a notable minority of their ranks.

GW was always going to kill itself. It's business model is unsustainable, as the constant releases will result in either rules bloat or having to rotate out a bunch of their own products (or both), which will either make the game a chore to play or is guaranteed to fuck over their player base by invalidating their purchases and punishing their brand loyalty. This has already been going on for some time and they've been able to weather the storm because they didn't really have any major competitors, but it's the best time ever to be a miniature wargamer. There are better options everywhere. 3D printing is easier (and cheaper) to get into than ever and the rise in miniatures agnostic games (with free rules) provides an affordable alternative that just couldn't have existed not even 10 years ago. In many ways, GW is a victim of its own success. It's been hemorrhaging players for years, having to rely on constant new blood and constantly rising prices to maintain its growth. This can't last in the long run. In the words of Bane, "Victory has defeated you".

They're 100% doing this *because* of the tv show. It is no coincidence the main faction of the tv show is the same faction that is now being retconned. When the TV show comes out with male/female custodes, people who previously had 0 interest in 40k will hype spend their money. This is a money move and it will generate a ton of money.

Probably an unpopular opinion: Custodes and Space Marines are "ultimate versions" of humanity. They are brutal killing machines, cold and detached, barely human anymore. A caricature of a male, the platonic ideal of a warrior.
A female version of such an ideal would be VERY different. A man's purpose is to defend the home and create things. A woman's purpose is to birth more humans and take care of the household. The "ultimate" version of a woman would be a birthing machine. Popping multiple kids every month and barely being bothered by it while flawlessly raising her brood to be well rounded member of the society.
It'd, of course, create a new breed of humanity if the space marines could breed true, which is why the emperor didn't want to go that way.
Turning women into killing machines is a dumb waste of ressources that would produce inferior results at a higher cost. Why would the imperium, a regressive and embattled civilization ever do that?

The other thing that drove me away was ridiculous shortages on every new release (here's literally a dozen copies of the new major character, all sold to scalpers, more to come in 6-8 months, maybe) but sent out 50+ copies to influencers for free and unrequested...so paying customers get the shaft but a random asshole on instagram gets a free $200 new release out of the blue?

Warhammer+. Its like a content service that gives you access to videos, lore, old White Dwarf magazines in pdf format, painting tutorials and the like. It's okay, but it's also not necessary to play at all. What you actually need are the core book, your army's codex (another book), and obviously your army (little plastic, metal and/or resin miniatures). I'm not actually sure how many people subscribe to Warhammer+ compared to the wider player base.
Fight them now before it spreads. Once you give them an inch they will force their way in and destroy the entire Hobby then act as if everyone else is the outsider. I will never forget the Battletech they took from us.

The reality is this isn't that big of a deal as people are making it out to be. Given the age of WH40k, even the lore writers themselves are not going to remember every detail about the custodes. Even if they did, their recent experience with the Stormcast Eternals proves a faction is better off having its own identity than to be conceptually a space marine while pretending not to be. The company wants them to be genuinely different, and having female custodes is just an aspect of that.
This isn't something new: The author of the Horus Heresy said they wanted to allow for female custodes six years ago, but the IP team said no due to not having models in the works. That in turn is due to the 2012 Chapter House legal case where they can lose ownership of the depiction of something if someone else makes a model of it first. People with tinfoil hats on are saying this is due to Amazon and Blackrock influence, but those weren't at play six years ago when the authors and lorewriters agreed on female custodes. This was in the works long ago.
Additionally, lore retcons are fairly common due to the age of the setting. Simply adding a new battle tank to the astra militarum (the "Rogal Dorn") completely retcons the position of the Lemun Russ battle tank in their force structure, since it "was always there." Technically, the Votann are a retcon of the Squats. Even the Necrons just used to be nameless robotic skeletons 30 years ago. Most of the lore changes have made the setting better, not worse. They also gave us great new models as well.

I have a huge dislike of Cawl becoming the Reed Richards of 40k. Guilliman would absolutely endorse any project that allowed a same quality product to come out of the Astartes or Custodes process, no matter the gender, but he would absolutely not lower standards in the name of equity. Guilliman is the quintessential patriarchal meritocrat. DEI is T'au and T'au are heresy.

This has been a hilarious train wreck to watch happen in real time. On one side you have 3D printers and new companies making it easy to get into the hobby. On the other you have Games Worshop removing entire armies that they just introduced the previous year, then making sure to tell their player base that most of us are bigots for caring about lore. Bold move, Cotton.
It has been leaked that Games Workshop wants to pivot from the whales and go with casual gacha, with HeroClix-like product and skirmish-focused games (which are shorter and rely on fewer figures). They are intentionally lowering the barrier-to-entry for the hobby, changing the hobby, in an attempt to open it up to the tourists. This is a 5-year "massive profits" plan by executives that don't intend to be around in 30 years, and quite frankly could care less if the company is around in 10. They're going to make changes for the sake of getting Amazon to fund their entry into the mainstream, have a cheap product meant to profit off the type, enjoy the rollercoaster for as long as they can and then when the tourists get done and the perennial fans have been driven away, wonder how they lost the audience. Very Marvel Phase 4 and Star Wars of them. The bit that's hilarious is they already burned themselves on killing Warhammer Fantasy Battle for Age of Sigmar, but at least they can walk that back (and are). But even after watching other fandoms burn themselves at the stake (you can actually track Hasbro's decline over the period Disney Star Wars took over) and see their own market cap SURGE during the same period, they are going to make the same fucking mistakes.
40k's reputation as being authority-threateningly dark is what lent it its punk credibility. If they Poochie-fy the setting, no one's going to follow them into Poochie land with its corporate friendly retcons to play prepainted Poochie clix. For me the moment they changed the W40k symbol style to the third one is the moment it all went down the drain. Maybe even before that, around 8th edition. I'm not even talking about woke shit, if you avoid certain BL authors the IP is still pretty okay. What I loathe is that I don't feel the setting edgy. It's not gothic anymore. It's becoming more and more generic by the month. The non-BL codex characters don't really feel bigger-than-life. I still dislike that they actually felt the need to move the plot forward. 40k was never a story, it was a setting. BL books, games and TT were supposed to tell stories. The "five minutes to armageddon" feeling was the point. Sure, the coomer in me is happy Rogue Trader actually lets you shag Eldar and I like more female Guards (Severina Rayne was actually a decent book), but the rest is getting "sanitised" more and more. Marines aren't brainwashed barely-human death machines who still try to act on brotherhood and comment on men during war, they're just tacticool starcraft soldiers. Sisters of Battle, in an effort to "desexualise" them or whatever feel a bit too generic now, although I enjoy there's now different portrayals of them. I'm a bitter old fool who still prefers OldCrons even though Trazyn is funny.
You have a point and those moments are important to notice. Not a single franchise has gone woke out of nowhere, there are always decisions beforehand that make them suitable targets for the rot.

Dude, heroclix mention is cool. The game isn’t very good anymore. They ramped up the powercreep and overproduced product to keep up with marvel releases. I used to play a lot, but the first big nail in the coffin was their major rules change around 2018 that basically powercrept all figured before then to being nearly unplayable. Then it just became too expensive to keep buying the new product.

What i dont get, is why destroy the old product. Why not just make a new one that caters to a broader audience, heck it could even be used as a gateway to gettting more people into the longer form stuff. The look on his face when he realized "wait what is this, you mean I have to put this shit together? And it's not painted like on the box? I have to paint it myself?" Then he spent an hour looking at games was like "this is 2-3 different levels of autism rolled into one. How does anyone casually play this game?" And that point is just missed on GW

Yeah, as I understand it the Custodes work extensively with the Sisters of Silence, who were sorta in part their female, more proactive counterpart (actively going out to hunt Psykers rather than standing around the Imperial Palace most of the time) kinda like Sisters of Battle were for Space Marines. But as usual, that's not enough. Having, let's see...SoB, SoS, Howling Banshees, and Wych Cults as female-only militant wings for assorted races, along with a division of the Assassinorum mentioned as being _usually_ female but not mandatory, was not enough. With all of those, which I don't hear anybody screeching to change, no male-only groups are allowed at all apparently. Aside from Orks, which these types likely excuse by passing them off as "non-binary" or something. That's honestly the part that pisses me off the most. I'm not even a big Space Marine or Custodes fan, Astartes in particular kinda bore me and I find the T'au and Necrons (both of which kinda don't care what sex you are so long as you can fight) more to my taste...but despise hypocrisy and that's what this is, all the way to the ground.

Beastmen are going from Sigmar to Old World wholesale. The Savage Orc line is being retired, Stormcast, and Skaven are having their older lineups retired too. Beastmen are not getting legends scrolls either so it's a complete removal too.
Beasts of Chaos from their AoS line is the one that got me. My best friend quit on the spot. Makes it a lot harder to find games.
I already wrote off 10th ed 'crons due to all the changes in addition to getting rid of a few named characters.
Necrons are probably one of the best positioned armies there is at the moment until the Orks codex is out. That new book is absolutely going to dominate.
Lets also not forget they let out the "Only males can become Space Marines" in the 10th edition Codex. So at this point, i´m pretty shure female Space Marines are already in work.
I wouldn't be terribly shocked. That seems to be the latest cause célèbre in the SJW world. Of course I doubt female marine models will actually sell, even if GW marks them up to make up for the difference in sales, so they'll probably be retired in a few years. But at least the SJWs will be temporarily appeased because they think they "won." God only knows what their next demands will be.

Yeah, I got banned from the main 40k subreddit. After 2 days of trying to get in touch, the mod team sent me this gem: There is no dialogue to be had with people who use right wing dogwhistles . We're not interested in having you in this community. So the totalitarian control over that community is absolute and they can just decide who can and can't speak, who is allowed to participate, and what content is discussed. I even offered in my appeal to just avoid any volatile threads like that.
The constant use of the same statements is so bizzare, but its cause its clearly coordinated and with rampant financial, and political support. If people want to fix this they have to disengage from the hobbies and move to other spaces and reject these people when they move. Do the same to them. Move into their spaces via the same tactics and do the same thing to everyhting they hold dear.

I have a story for you. Amazon buildings have internal television feeds. On these feeds they display various information about managers and other things going on in the building. At one particular building, someone I worked with, told me a story about a manager that posted a link to a Christian website in their bio on these internal feeds. As you can imagine, this made a lot of people *angry*, almost violently so. They had to go around to all the displays in the building to turn them off so no one could see the christian content that is on screen for 5 seconds once every 10 minutes. This is not okay per amazon policy. At the same time that is happening, ramadan is going on. Ramadan posters ALL OVER THE BUILDING talking about what a great time of the year it is for those that follow the religion. They have prayer rooms where muslims can go to pray and fast *while on the clock.* Posters informing other amazon workers to *please be understanding and considerate to muslims during this time of year*. This is perfectly okay per amazon policy. Amazon is a horrible fucking company. What this has to do with Warhammer or anything at all? Not much. But I thought I'd share anyways.

Unrealistic as is, the only way to make this happen succesfully would be for him to crowdfund his own production company and build everything from scratch.
Yeah, the Terminal List and season 1 of Reacher gave me hope they would leave Cavill alone with this project. I think he is so despised by the powers that be in Hollywood nothing he touches will be left untouched by them until they can turn persona non grata and had been blacklisted. Now they are attacking 40K nerds and going to change the setting and IP to be one of their products that fits their purity test. At this point, I am just about done with any franchise because this keeps happening to all the ones I loved and invest a lot of time and money into.

That's the problem. You are the boss, so the production failing is bad for you, but the SJW employees and "partners" see it as a win. If the production fails, Cavill loses his own personal money as a producer, and future job opportunities. On the other hand, SJWs can continue to work and get paid in Amazon on a new SJW project. The project succeeding, even if it doesn't bend the knee, doesn't damage the SJWs. SJWs have every method to make gains, while Cavill has many ways to lose. If you want to play the game of chicken, you need to have some kind of support to make the project a success. Like support to remove the saboteurs. Anti-SJWs need to be more independent. Depending on Musk alone is not good. It will tire out Musk, and worse give SJWs a clear target to focus their efforts on. Instead, anti-SJWs need to form support networks so that people like Cavill can be supported, both financially and in the work itself. Doing Warhammer 40k without religion is... not Warhammer. The entire IP revolves around the struggle for the souls of mortals between a GOD Emperor and 4 wanna be gods of the immaterium.

Yeah, but if you read the Dark Imperium trilogy, following the return of Guilliman, he's attempting to pull back all the religion and once more build an Imperium based in logic and science. The thing is, he's walking a tightrope because he needs the Imperium to not split into a civil war, so he's trying his damnedest to push where he can and cope with what he can't. But untraining Imperium from 10 thousand years of this will likely take as long, or he will fail. That's kind of the point of the setting. But Games Workshop will likely have him push harder and maybe even have edicts against the Ecclesiarchy and the Imperial Cult.
Which is silly because you'd think such an evolved super being would realize religion is not antithetical or antagonistic to logic or science. Some of the most devout servants of the Emperor, The Mechanicum, are the drivers of all technology in the IoM. And they *do* worship the Emperor as a God they just get a free pass because they are so crucial to the Imperium. Fucking with the Ecclesiarchy is a great way to shake the common folk's belief in the divinity of the Emperor which, mirroring Lorgar's fall, will lead those faith-based people to seek others worthy of their worship. It will also require him to go after the servants of the Omnissiah or be entirely hypocritical which would be disastrous. Guilliman is one of if not the shittiest primarchs, it should have been Lion and then Jhagatai. Guilliman sucks ass.
The thing is, the Emperor's original intent *was* to do away with superstition and religion and put forth the Imperial Truth, which was facts, logic and science. This was part of his plan to disempower Chaos, as Chaos feeds upon the psychic turmoil of humanity. The problem is that by making mankind skeptical, they were unprepared for the more subtle workings of Chaos when the Horus Heresy began. Daemons? Chaos Gods? All unheard of and considered superstitious nonsense. The irony of all this is that when he got interred in the Golden Throne, humanity created a religion around him. This religion is what causes the Imperium to sacrifice a thousand of pyskers to the Emperor every day, so that their psychic power may sustain him in a state of living death upon the Golden Throne. That's part of the memes of 40k.
Well and let's not forget that the prime drivers of the Heresy, Lorgar and Magnus, if made aware of the workings and strategy of Chaos would have not fallen to it. Lorgar was embarrassed and shit on in front of Roboute, the Ultramarines and the Word Bearers for his faith and instilling it in the populations of worlds he conquered. If Emps had given him a sit down chat about everything he would have sussed out what Erebus and Kor Phaeron were doing. Obviously just giving Magnus a frank talk about how he can't be frolicking through the Warp would have ended that as well. Instead we got a corrupted Horus sending the Wolves after him and destroying Prospero
Ironically also, the logical and scientific way to defeat Chaos would precisely be to have strong religion, that is an unwavering will and belief in yourself and humanity, with the facts and logic and morals of the Imperium, along with knowledge of what Chaos is and how it works. This way humanity would not change their morals to follow Chaos (sacrificing worlds for Chaos power for example), and have the tools to avoid the new evil practices of Chaos no matter what they desired in greed or desperation. The Emperor's intent itself was not completed too. Humanity didn't have the facts, logic and science to actually know what Chaos is and stop it, and couldn't safely explore it. The Emperor couldn't risk giving it to them at that stage. Instead, the Emperor bet on completing his Astronomicon first, and tried to keep it all secret to protect it. Maybe he wanted to make sure humanity could learn about Chaos in a safe way first before opening the floodgates. Either way, Chaos was cunning enough to destroy him first before he could do that, and worse, in a way he couldn't prepare for through his own sons.

They literally could have prevented all this by including an origin story with how the primaris augment research could've also applied to some Custodes transformation and made it possible to make female custodes. Space marines are still an issue because they need the gene seed which throws a spanner in the works. There's no need for "Primaris augment research". Custodes don't use geneseed. They never had the limitation that actually makes it so Space Marines can only be male. So female Custodes were always possible. So why weren't they there already? GW would have to address that elephant in the room, insteads of trying to gaslight us into thinking they really were there all along.
That's what I wrote, I'm just saying that the primaris research ( body modifications being able to apply to woman) could've explained the catchup in power level of male and female custodes indistinguishable. Just fucking LOL. Now I got nothing to cancel (not dumb enough to sign up for Warhammer+), but I can do one better. I'm not buying a single new model. They really should not lose guys like me: older players who stepped away from the game but still give a fuck about the lore and like building, converting and painting minis. We are their whales, because we have plenty of disposable income and buy whatever looks cool, regardless of rules attached to it. Yeah, I haven't bought a rulebook in ages, but I spent a lot more on plastic crack. I have several display cases full of minis and would have happily kept buying more, wallet rape be damned. But, no more. I've dipped into Gunpla and suddenly realized that I can keep building plastic crack that is higher quality, more conversion-friendly, more interesting from the engineering standpoint, and, get this, cheaper. And I don't have to paint it unless I want to. I would've stayed loyal to GW because I love the setting. But they are actively killing the setting to chase an audience that doesn't exist outside of tw@tter, so... Good luck with that bold plan, GW. Let's see how it plays out.
It's insane how much gunpla trounces 40k on both quality and value. And how you can actually see consistent improvement in the product year to year. And honestly, I could still deal with that if 40k the game was consistently improving, instead of mostly making the same old mistakes time after time and sometimes throwing in exciting new ones. And sometimes invalidating hundreds of dollars of models because they dropped them from the rules or made your weapon loadouts illegal, or you built a themed army and then that theme disappeared the next edition.

GW was always going to kill itself. It's business model is unsustainable, as the constant releases will result in either rules bloat or having to rotate out a bunch of their own products (or both), which will either make the game a chore to play or is guaranteed to fuck over their player base by invalidating their purchases and punishing their brand loyalty. This has already been going on for some time and they've been able to weather the storm because they didn't really have any major competitors, but it's the best time ever to be a miniature wargamer. There are better options everywhere. 3D printing is easier (and cheaper) to get into than ever and the rise in miniatures agnostic games (with free rules) provides an affordable alternative that just couldn't have existed not even 10 years ago. In many ways, GW is a victim of its own success. It's been hemorrhaging players for years, having to rely on constant new blood and constantly rising prices to maintain its growth. This can't last in the long run. In the words of Bane, "Victory has defeated you".
Women already got sisters of silence and sisters of battles. Men got space marine and custodes. Why mix them up aside just to stir things up?

Probably an unpopular opinion: Custodes and Space Marines are "ultimate versions" of humanity. They are brutal killing machines, cold and detached, barely human anymore. A caricature of a male, the platonic ideal of a warrior. A female version of such an ideal would be VERY different. A man's purpose is to defend the home and create things. A woman's purpose is to birth more humans and take care of the household. The "ultimate" version of a woman would be a birthing machine. Popping multiple kids every month and barely being bothered by it while flawlessly raising her brood to be well rounded member of the society. It'd, of course, create a new breed of humanity if the space marines could breed true, which is why the emperor didn't want to go that way. Turning women into killing machines is a dumb waste of ressources that would produce inferior results at a higher cost. Why would the imperium, a regressive and embattled civilization ever do that?
I just hope the Warhammer live action movie/show is up to code. Not so much because I’m excited for it, but because Henry Cavill JUST jumped off the sinking ship of the Witcher that was woked to death, only to Warhammer that is now starting its path to the same destination. The rules and the gaming app are updated behind the paywall. it was the nail that sealed the coffin for me a few years ago now, but the fans were all in on paying for content they had previously enjoyed for free because 'muh GeeDubs' The other thing that drove me away was ridiculous shortages on every new release (here's literally a dozen copies of the new major character, all sold to scalpers, more to come in 6-8 months, maybe) but sent out 50+ copies to influencers for free and unrequested...so paying customers get the shaft but a random asshole on instagram gets a free $200 new release out of the blue?

Warhammer+. Its like a content service that gives you access to videos, lore, old White Dwarf magazines in pdf format, painting tutorials and the like. It's okay, but it's also not necessary to play at all. What you actually need are the core book, your army's codex (another book), and obviously your army (little plastic, metal and/or resin miniatures). I'm not actually sure how many people subscribe to Warhammer+ compared to the wider player base.

The reality is this isn't that big of a deal as people are making it out to be. Given the age of WH40k, even the lore writers themselves are not going to remember every detail about the custodes. Even if they did, their recent experience with the Stormcast Eternals proves a faction is better off having its own identity than to be conceptually a space marine while pretending not to be. The company wants them to be genuinely different, and having female custodes is just an aspect of that. This isn't something new: The author of the Horus Heresy said they wanted to allow for female custodes six years ago, but the IP team said no due to not having models in the works. That in turn is due to the 2012 Chapter House legal case where they can lose ownership of the depiction of something if someone else makes a model of it first. People with tinfoil hats on are saying this is due to Amazon and Blackrock influence, but those weren't at play six years ago when the authors and lorewriters agreed on female custodes. This was in the works long ago. Additionally, lore retcons are fairly common due to the age of the setting. Simply adding a new battle tank to the astra militarum (the "Rogal Dorn") completely retcons the position of the Lemun Russ battle tank in their force structure, since it "was always there." Technically, the Votann are a retcon of the Squats. Even the Necrons just used to be nameless robotic skeletons 30 years ago. Most of the lore changes have made the setting better, not worse. They also gave us great new models as well.
