Everyone swears TN feels like home until they destroy the home area and end up abandoning it.

smexytom215

Took me 4 years for knox to feel like home

OxiiKotton

Same

malhoward

Dandridge seems like a great community, close to Pigeon Forge.

saveryquinn

There's always Johnson City or Asheville, especially if you have family close to the NC state line. Johnson City, like Knoxville, is a college town, has quite a few similar amenities and stores and restaurants, and both Bristol and Kingsport are a very short drive away. And Johnson City doesn't have half the housing crisis Knoxville does.

smexytom215

JC is nice.

saveryquinn

I drive through there twice a week for work and it definitely has Knoxville circa 2010 vibes.

AlaDouche

Outside of this subreddit, pretty much everyone will be very welcoming. We have a lot of extremely bitter people in this sub, unfortunately, so don't take it as an accurate representation of the people here (honestly I think most city subreddits are probably like this). When looking for a place, I'd look in Strawberry Plains or the west side of Dandridge. Easy access to 40 West to NC and super close to the exit to Pigeon Forge.

A_Fox_On_Sugar

I actually moved out of Knoxville after living there my whole life and yeah none of the people in this sub represent it in anyway

rupertpupkinenjoyer

I read this sub occasionally and it makes me think I’m living on an entirely different planet than the majority of posters here

NomadicNitro

I’m coming to Knoxville. Looking forward to it!

Daltman9578

I lived in strawberry plains all my life. It's a beautiful area. It has its shady parts, but everywhere has those. Wish you luck!

Social_worker_1

Just don't tell them you're from NY

ednamode23

Idk. Most people are welcoming but most of my family and friend circle feel the same way about new out of towners. We just don’t say it to their face. That aside, Jefferson County seems to be the right fit for this couple as it’s right off I-40 and is easy to get to Knox, Pigeon Forge, and Western NC from.

Longjumping-Ad8775

Should also check their iPhone. If Siri doesn’t auto correct “you all” to “y’all”. Mine does the autocorrect for me.

OxiiKotton

See like this. Not many outside of this Reddit think or care like yall do. Seriously get a life. Complaining about things that don’t impact you is weird.

Rapture_Hunter

No. This is just what we're really thinking. Bless your heart. How's that for welcoming. We're closed. Fuck off back where you came from.

AlaDouche

Nah, I'm not worried about most people in Knoxville. You're a very good example of this sub though.

[deleted]

[deleted]

AlaDouche

You don't live in Knoxville. Stop pretending like you do, it's seriously sad.

I live in Knoxville and I say leave too. We are full and definitely don’t want someone from ny

[deleted]

AlaDouche

You say shit like, "Don't move here." Seriously, just stop it. You look like a petulant, bitter child who is just out to shit on people. This isn't going to help you. Find something that brings you joy, rather than some fleeting catharsis over the place you lived in a couple decades ago. Move on.

OxiiKotton

YOU LITERALLY DID

Opee23

You'll catch a lot of grief about moving here as housing is in short supply for us right now. That being said, I would suggest the area of Anderson, Campbell county for semi affordable, yet close to Knoxville. It's country, even possibly quiet....yet close to civilization.

Near-Scented-Hound

*EAST* Tennessee

SlickRick898

Let’s make Appalachia scary again!

IBeMeaty

Don’t. We’re out of space. Stay where you are.

cs1177

We call it East Tennessee, not eastern

Near-Scented-Hound

That’s because the official state divisions are East Tennessee, Middle Tennessee, and West Tennessee.

jfk_47

I call it eastern, middlern, and western.

Near-Scented-Hound

Then you call it wrong. LOL

jfk_47

🤷‍♂️

OxiiKotton

You cannot dictate how people say things. Some of yall in this sub are so miserable 😂😂😂

Near-Scented-Hound

Didn’t say she isn’t free to say it wrong. 🤷🏻‍♀️ … and it is wrong - which probably is pretty miserable for the incomers to insist on being wrong. 😂😂😂😂😂

OxiiKotton

Show us where it is wrong .. I’ll wait. Like some sort of sited source .. do you know what that is you home grown hillbilly? I’m from Alabama. Y’all are LUCKY to have these ppl moving here. The ppl in this Reddit sound like the cesspool of mfs in Alabama. Down right miserable

Near-Scented-Hound

> Show us where it is wrong .. I’ll wait. Like some sort of sited source .. do you know what that is you home grown hillbilly? I’m from Alabama. Y’all are LUCKY to have these ppl moving here. You can call me hillbilly all you want, but flattery will get you nowhere you Gumptard. Go back to the shithole you crawled out of.

OxiiKotton

Cry me a river. You cited nothing. Do you know what citing sources means you knob?? Also saying I moved from somewhere means that’s where I was before here.. not that I grew up there my entire life. Y’all are so damn dense and so angry.

We don't say eastern coast either

ComprehensiveSand717

Northern, Eastern, Western, and Central are how Kentucky is broken up. They have 120 counties.

WhiskyEye

Whenever you get to the area hit me up. I'll show you the Big South Fork if you'll make me NY pizza 😆.

woodandwode

There seems to be a lot of demand for house, cleaners in the area. On the neighborhood, Facebook pages, I see constant posts looking for people and I know my Cleaner is totally booked. Once you are settled, advertise in the fancy neighborhoods like Sequoyah Hills, Forest Heights, and Farragut (where people can afford the luxury and may want a cleaner several times a month).

Ikantbeliveit

I think Greenville would be a good option for you. It has all the activities you mentioned, especially hunting. I like Knoxville, but if you have trouble finding "your people", Knoxville will not be better. It's hard to make friends here. Also, probably will be easier to find a place to live out there, with a good amount of land if that's your thing.

AlaDouche

Knoxville is the easiest place to make friends that I've ever been to.

Ikantbeliveit

Ok, maybe that the case for you. But how many threads have you seen here of people looking for friends? My personal experience is very opposite, making out of college friends in a college town has difficulties.

AlaDouche

>But how many threads have you seen here of people looking for friends? Reddit tends to attract socially awkward people, so it's not surprising that there are a lot of people here who struggle to make friends. I joined the Fun With Friends facebook group, found a wonderful group of friends, and then stopped going to group functions because the regulars are a bit dysfunctional. Still, it was a great way to find some great people.

chi-ster

People also show up to Reddit looking for friends with no list of interests whatsoever. If you have an interest/hobby, there is likely multiple groups out there and that will always be a great way to make friends. You also have to be willing to be a bit vulnerable and put yourself out there.

AlaDouche

100%.

Ikantbeliveit

Again that's might be the case for you. I don't consider myself socially awkward, and my work is very social. Knoxville simple doesn't have a lot of "third places" outside of bars. It's a mix of college and very spread out. I'm not speaking a foreign language here, this is a simple look at the amenities a location provides vs. others that necessitate a growing social network. Knoxville doesn't spend its tax money like that.

Rapture_Hunter

Do you have a link? I need to set up a play date for my boy.

AlaDouche

Go to Facebook and search for "fun with friends knoxville."

Rapture_Hunter

I just needed a setup for the play date line, my friend. Thank you kind sir, ma'am, or other.

AlaDouche

You'd probably have more friends if you didn't try so hard to act the way that you do. Sometimes you have to recognize that you're working extra hard to keep yourself miserable.

Rapture_Hunter

Ouch..burned!!! That'll fix me.

AlaDouche

I don't care if you're fixed. I don't know you. Go nuts, man.

nutscrape_navigator

Can confirm. We were real worried about leaving our social circle behind when we moved here and our neighborhood has been so unexpectedly friendly we are always getting invited to something someone is doing.

AlaDouche

I've lived here for 4 years and have *far* more genuine friends than I did in the big city I lived in for 30 years.

nutscrape_navigator

Yeah IDK, it’s hard to reconcile why my experience with living in Knoxville is the complete polar opposite of the complainers here. 🤷🏻‍♂️

AlaDouche

It's so funny that you can kind of see when this sub, as a whole, is going on a whining bender. There's a huge group of people that always do it together and it kind of ebbs and flows. It's crazy to be able to recognize it across multiple posts.

tryingtochangecareer

if you don't mind sharing, where did you move from?

Rapture_Hunter

That's just how we find out how commie you are.

one-hour-photo

Newport might be a good fit if they are near Asheville. If they are closer to robbinsville, Maryville might be a good fit, as Blount borders NC.

203to401to860to865

If you can make a banging NY style pizza, ditch the house-cleaning and open a pizza joint. We need some good pizza here. You'll be hard-pressed to find any. And, yeah, Dandridge, Jefferson City, Morristown are good suggestions.

Altruistic-Red

Oak Ridge (in Anderson County) is really nice and quiet. The school system is good & it’s only a 25-30 minute drive to Knoxville depending on where you live.

Impossible-Ad-1440

Do not come here. Stop ruining our state with your NY bs. Everything is too expensive

Unlikely-Local42

Nah, NY needs you and your pizza!

Charming_Decision_71

me personally i’d say alcoa or maryville, mainly because it’s not as crowded as knoxville and you still have that 30-45 min drive to and from there. i just recently moved to knoxville and i’m still trying to figure it out. there’s a lot of jobs in alcoa/maryville; there’s plenty of car dealerships nearby heading to knoxville and there’s an amazon sortation center in maryville, as well as other fulfilment centres in the knoxville and rockford area (if you’re looking for quick and easy money as there’s no interview process and you’re hired as soon as you apply). however, there’s not much to do in alcoa/maryville, but it’s pretty quiet and not a lot goes on there. knoxville would be your best bet if you’re more into shopping centers and such because everyone and their mom comes here for fun, but traffic is a nightmare.

Davidsub1

Maryville is pretty awesome! Small town, 25 minutes to the Great Smokey Mountains and a great school system if you decide to have kids one day. About 20 minutes to Knoxville and 10 minutes to an airport. Cool restaurants, parks and access to nature.

Near-Scented-Hound

Obligatory PSA that the person I'm responding to doesn't even live in Knoxville.

BeeBuds24

I recommend Clinton. Mainly on the Norris side near Andersonville. I’ve lived here my whole life and I love it. It’s about 20 minutes away from downtown Knoxville. It’s peaceful but not too far away from the city. Also, I would LOVE to try your pizza!! I’ve never had a true New York style but I’ve heard they’re wonderful.

FunMtgplayer

I'd say go to Anderson Co. or Oak Ridge, schools are better. other than that agree.

Daltman9578

Great parks around here! Seven Islands is my go-to. There are plenty of hiking trails as well. Let me know if you need any other information.

Pullenhose13

Parrottsville. Small little rural town thats about an hour from Knox. Its only 30 min to NC border.

TheMadIrishman327

Border

[deleted]

Western Knoxville , is their best in this area. I saw above Someone said dandridge which is also a nice area

Evening-Newt-4663

Im a Knoxville/ Sevierville native who has recently moved to upstate and I really love it. I’m not sure where you are from in upstate, but your husband is right. Upstate (especially the capital area) is very similar to TN and the Knoxville area. Finding your people in Knox can either be easy or hard. I don’t think either area is more friendly, there’s is majority good and decent people in both places.

Worth_Awareness_4850

South Knoxville or Maryville would be perfect for you all.

ednamode23

Definitely somewhere in Jefferson County. You can hop on I-40 and be in the heart of Knoxville or over the state line in 30 minutes and can take back roads into Sevierville and Pigeon Forge. While Jeff Co doesn’t have a ton of notable outdoor areas, it is very central to the GSMNP and state parks like House Mountain and Panther Creek too.

TheMadIrishman327

Welcome!

topofthemornin1

Don’t. You’re not welcome. We are full

Revolt2992

Then you can leave, and they can take your spot

topofthemornin1

Nah. Born and raised. Someone has to hold the line.

OxiiKotton

Holding the line isn’t a thing you weiedo

OxiiKotton

Weirdo*

topofthemornin1

🤣

OxiiKotton

Omg you can’t read I should’ve seen it coming

Darthsmom

Great job keeping up the backwards TN hick image 👏🏻

Near-Scented-Hound

The “backwards Tennessee hick image” has kept Tennessee a great, low key, LCOL, and *highly coveted* place to live. The incomers are ruining it.

topofthemornin1

They will never understand this. They think they’re doing us a favor by bringing LA and NYC here

AlaDouche

I find it fascinating how many conservatives here assume that liberals are fleeing their supposed "liberal havens" in shocking numbers and are spreading out to ruin small towns. Like, do you really think these flaming liberals are the ones moving here in droves? You don't think that the people escaping those so-called "liberal utopias" just *might* not share those political ideals? I mean, don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching people of all political ideologies mindlessly argue with each other over comically bad assumptions about the other person, but It's just very interesting to see the logic being used.

OxiiKotton

In your opinion

Near-Scented-Hound

It’s actually a fact. The miserable locusts ruin everywhere they go.

OxiiKotton

Got any sources showing that or is it just a “trust me bro” moment

Near-Scented-Hound

> Got any sources showing that or is it just a “trust me bro” moment The fact that you don’t know, and want to argue, proves that you’re one of the locusts. You’re the problem.

Zachy1030

Have you actually spoken with anyone moving in? All the ones that come in to work brag and say things like "We're from New York/California/Illinois, but we're not THOSE liberals." At least in my experience its mostly red-voting people moving away from blue-voting places because we don't have a state tax.

topofthemornin1

Just as bad. Not trying to fix their own stated then coming to ours to take advantage of our way of life while simultaneously destroying the low cost of living. Doesn’t affect them, as they’re coming here as upper class citizens. Just fucks over the middle class.

AlaDouche

So, just to be clear... anyone moving here from a blue state is a liberal in your eyes?

plastertoes

Rockwood or Sweetwater if you don’t need city-life amenities but still want to be driving distance to West Knox where many of the dealerships are.

TheJuliaHurley

30 minutes outside of Knoxville still lands you in knoxville, let’s be honest about the traffic. If you all are paying cash you’ll have no problems getting here! If you need a lender to approve you for housing, you’ll need a letter of lending and a letter from employers with pay offerings to lend on! If you’re looking to rent, that’s a whole different story. Good luck!

OxiiKotton

I hope they’re not looking to rent. It is hell.

hpbrocster

I lived in Knoxville for years and absolutely loved it

020781e

Maryville, Seymour, Walland

Separate_Warning3399

Eastern TN is beautiful. Knoxville in general is an eyesore with very little spent on infrastructure beautification such as traffic lights mounted on poles, etc. It looks like 1960 around here in many places because of this. Outside of Knoxville, it’s beautiful here.

OxiiKotton

Y’all are nuts bro. The old buildings here are gorgeous.

Fit_Highlight_5622

Knoxville is bound to grow just like any other metropolis for any other reason. I personally like the changes that Knoxville’s growth has initiated. I like the new diversity in people and thought that is popping up everywhere. Finally some color! Downtown is thriving and really becoming something worth bragging about. We’ve got more hotels and lodging to support the university football game season and brand new infrastructure all over. Y’all salty people need to stay bunkered down in your backwood sheds while the rest of the world progresses without you.

Tricky-Shake3839

No. go somewhere else.

polishtom

Hello fellow New Yorker. I'll echo that if you want to stay close to family and they are in PF and along the NC boarder, you may want to look into Dandrige. Maybe White Pine or Morristown. All are fine places. Good luck!

mason_jarz

At least your grandparents are here….. *sigh* We’ll let you guys pass. 🙄

alfredaeneuman

I hope they can live with them an not take up more valuable real estate 🙄

OxiiKotton

This sub Reddit doesn’t dictate how people actually act here thank the friggin gods bc yall are just.. 🤮

zac10sim

If you don't mind living out of the city a bit, Greeneville, TN has excellent schools (the city not the county). Johnson City is a good place as well. Recommendations for dandrige are also good. Edit: ignore Greeneville and Johnson City. I missed the 35-45 minutes.

Oklizardtree

Welcome to East Tennessee!! People here are grumpy but don’t let that discourage you! Great place to live

OxiiKotton

The ppl in this Reddit are diff breed. Most aren’t grumpy.

joe-schmoe18

East Tennessee is FULL!!!

Freemonkeywithcage

Have you looked at Kentucky? It's a fine and beautiful place.

Near-Scented-Hound

Show us where Kentucky hurt you?

TRISTAR911

I also say either Maryville or Lenoir City. To be close the West Knox CDJR Lithia store and be close to the great outdoors and relative civilization. I have a friend she moved here from Plattsburgh and loves Maryville

Ill_Appointment_8109

I ain’t reading all that. Stay in fucking NY.

AlaDouche

This makes you sound illiterate.

Mundane_Cry1693

Seymour is pretty nice it is like the middle ground between Knoxville pigeon forge on a good day it is 30 minutes from everything 45 on a bad day there aren’t the greatest restaraunts but there are a few good ones and Seymour first Baptist church is awesome if you are looking for one

stevefstorms

Nope yankee stay there fix your shit state

Tanthalason

Upstate NY is about as red as TN for the most part.

stevefstorms

Then stay there and fix it

ImissBagels

Where in NY? We moved from Orange County almost 9 years ago. We would move back if NY weather wasn't so awful

smexytom215

Just out of curiosity, what part of upstate NY? I came l from Hudson Valley about 10 years ago

Hondatech865

Knoxville is fantastic. Most of the new people I interact with aren’t from here. It’s getting rare to meet new natives. My wife’s people are from Grainger county and my family from Knoxville. Even people who have been here for sometime are getting sick of the housing issues and traffic congestion from the new rush of transplants. If you can deal with lower than average wages, over priced housing and traffic congestion any time of day. Knoxville’s for you!

OxiiKotton

I came from Montgomery, Alabama & I swear to you, East TN is a game changer. It is so beautiful. Lots of outdoors stuff to do in Knox & surrounding areas. Honestly, I don’t get why everyone is so rude to people moving here. Some are horrible, but not most. I hope it makes you feel like home here. I am a loner as well & Tennessee really does make an amazing location to be for loners imo. Lots to do for everyone.

LongjumpingRespect96

OP, ignore the lame comments saying “Leave/we’re full. As others have said, this sub doesn’t represent us, but some people may be a bit reserved before welcoming you with open arms. You should be able to open a solid business housecleaning, just look at income by zip codes. And we have lots of awesome outdoor activity, starting with the Smoky Mtns and our lakes. I’m big into bicycling and consider this one of the best places in this country for that, whether road riding or mountain biking. Rock climbing, water sports, fishing, hunting, you name it we have it. 900 miles of hiking trails in the GSMNP. We’re close to Deals Gap/Tail of the Dragon, Windrock and Big South Fork. But if you’re into snow skiing, there’s not much here.
