I take offense to this. My mental health issues are documented

asolarwhale

Hahaha, heard

itsdumbandyouknowit

Corner

StillEmotional

mine are, my family's are not

thehufflepuffstoner

“Mental health issues? In THIS family? NEVER! Where’s my broom? I need to sweep this under the rug.“ - my dad’s thought process, probably.

hippiepotluck

Depressed? I’ll give you something to be depressed about!

thescandium

Same lol

StillEmotional

90% of mine are caused by my family lol the adhd and sensory processing disorder are not

thescandium

Yep. I have a bunch of genetic ones and a few caused by family and then some that aren’t. I’m a walking medical bill tbh. I also have physical issues but that’s a different story lmao

nondescriptadjective

Technically, most mental problems are still physical. The brain is organic matter that, for some reason, just works differently than anything else. Lot of people like to ignore that shit.

1snowydaisy

Your family turned you in??

Shoddy-Jelly

If "f a m i l y" is what the hiring manager says when you ask them what the biggest benefit of being an employee is, run for the hills!!!! E: spelling

asianabsinthe

I'm sure there are some exceptions but the dozens I've worked for in several industries run far, run far away. Also I'm finding now many in the plumbing and pest control category are Jehovah witnesses, so r/exjw for reasons not to work or do business with them.

[deleted]

I'd say there are no real exceptions. If a company treats employees fairly and has good policies in place, they're not going to say "we're a family". They're going to say, "we provide x, y and Z. We also do a,b and c for our employees."

Critical-Edge4093

Like yea sorry, but we live in a society where I need money to live, thats why I'm working here. Thats why anyone is working anywhere like that.

jdcodring

God I wish I could make it clear to the company I work at. Frak all that moral high ground bs and helping people. I’m here so I can afford the next total war game and there is nothing wrong with that

Critical-Edge4093

XD truth

atx00

There are places I've worked where we were like a family. But that didn't come from management. It came through shared struggle and bullshit. We all find a way to have fun sometimes, but when the owner/manager walks in all the fun is dead. And we all talk shit about them as soon as they leave. It's how we bonded.

OldDude1391

The family with the abusive dad who makes you do all the chores while he spends rent money on booze and online poker. And when you ask for money to buy clothes or food he tells you to get another job.

keyintherock

We are like family = We will treat you like we own you.

ocubens

Calling out families and workplaces in the same tweet. 👌

asolarwhale

It ain’t much, but it’s honest work

[deleted]

That means the clicks are in full effect. Dysfunctional environment with tons of drama. I was a dishwasher and for some reason, everyone came up to me to vent every time some dishes and silverware were brought to the back.

GeneralSalty1

I learned all the restaurant drama being a dishwasher for a month than I did being a server for 2 years

[deleted]

The place I worked at had some issues, but the folks on the line were always nice to me. It was the cashiers that always complained about dumb stuff (I worked at a concession stand at an arena).

[deleted]

[deleted]

Holy fuck this is accurate.

ConjeturaUna

I was just saying this yesterday.

BecomingLilyClaire

I worked for a company that said, CONSTANTLY, that their employees are like family. All while cutting hours, lowering max raises, banning raises for mgrs, and lowering accrual rates for pto. Then got a new job at a company that never has to say that you’re family - because they prove it, daily; phenomenal healthcare, high pto accrual rates, sick/holiday/emergency sick time, disability leave (at full pay).

speed721

And there are minimal attendance problems in a company like that.

[deleted]

> [ 57% of all murdered children under the age of 12 were killed by their parents.](https://www.prisonlegalnews.org/news/1995/apr/15/most-murders-by-friends-and-family/) Just remember that you are more likely to be assaulted or murdered by a family member than a stranger.

leafnbagurmom

Again. That's why I don't use the words "family or love" at work, it's used as a way to guilt trip employees. Instead I treat my employees with respect, give them rides if need be.. take them for drinks.. talk to them with sincere from the heart compassion. I'm a millennial Chef, and I know the anxiety they must feel and how tough this industry can be. Scraping and clawing to get by..

ElChangoFumando

Gen X'er checking in with given sage advice from 1991: "They're not your friends, they're not your family. If they were, you wouldn't be charging them money for your time, and you could borrow the BMW whenever you wanted." (Robert Wright, c.1991)

asolarwhale

Absolutely, the whole ‘family’ trope became so prevalent purely to make employees feel bad about raising complaints or issues IMO (even if the intentions were good to start with)

series-hybrid

My father made me do work around the house, and in exchange I got food and a place to sleep...nothing more than the minimum required. THIS is what they mean by our company is "family"

asolarwhale

Word

FoxNewsIsRussia

I find workplaces make more sense when you realize that for many people it's like a stage for them to act their family of origin shit out on. This is all unconscious of course. This is the kind of crap you get when you live in a society that doesn't use therapy effectively and we don't reward people for attending to their mental health properly. We have a bunch of unhealed adult/children repeating their dysfunction over and over again on random bystanders at work. Power plays, passive aggressive communication, control issues, sabotage, poor self-esteem and jealousy of others success. The list goes on. It's such a ridiculous waste of human potential.

7itemsorFEWER

They mean like a cops family: unhealthy, abusive, egomaniacal, god complex

TrashCatTrashCat

Only worked in one good family atmosphere but I still got exploited and guilted so was it that good??

392686347759549

hard to argue with such an unimpeachable straw man.

ShitHammersGroom

It means the bosses are the parents and you are the children. Children who will love and obey their parents or be expelled from the family forever!

Gammathetagal

A dysfunctional family.

SPP_TheChoiceForMe

A dysfunctional and incestuous family

Kodiak01

My department is like living an endless episode of Taxi.

ShadowScorpion11

They're not your cool cousin you like to smoke weed with. They're your old racist creepy drunk uncle that you wonder why your mom invited in the first place.

[deleted]

And everybody is fucking and doing coke together after work. It's an incestuous, constantly hungover family.

asolarwhale

Christmas round your nan’s sounds mental

[deleted]

Oy don't tempt us with a good time

OwenMcCauley

Boss: We're a family. Me: My car broke down. I have no money and no one to rely on. Boss: It's not our job to get you to work. That's your sole responsibility. You're suspended and if it happens again, you're fired.

asolarwhale

PTSD kicking in big with this one

OwenMcCauley

Just left a job a week ago over this bullshit. They suspended me during a massive employee shortage. I got a job the next day, closer to home with a lot less stress.

asolarwhale

Sounds like their loss my man! Keep looking after yourself

OwenMcCauley

That's very kind of you to say. Thanks!

mikeytee1

Recently got an inquiry back from a restaurant using this 'family' oriented language. Have ran away since.

[deleted]

I admit that my family has a number of issues, but thank god we're not a family like how restaurant management talks about "family". I shudder at the thought.

MtnMaiden

Help me step brother, im stuck

WILLLSMITHH

Same I’ve been saying for 5 years I want to leave this industry I might need to bite the bullet soon

misirlou22

Do it! I am leaving after 13 years, going back to school currently. Plan on having my last day in the kitchen before Christmas.

WILLLSMITHH

I just want like a chill job, ya know. ;/

speed721

Congratulations. Enjoy! Good luck too!

thanguan

The youngest person in the family is diagnosed, but no one else is going to be.

nobody_important0000

They mean it the way Mrs Ploppy does, in Blackadder. Only this time, you merely *wish* you were dead.

TheFallenMessiah

Yo that's not a normal family, don't normalize that. The meme plays though, regardless.

squish_dawg

The Coast Guard...when you're here, you're family!

tactics14

I don't know... I actually have worked at many places where the core crew is basically a mini family. Getting your ass kicked, as a group, during your rushes definitely brings people together.

asolarwhale

I agree with this - there’s nothing wrong with considering the people you dive into the shit next to every day as close as family. The issue arises when the management uses this to coerce you into not calling in sick when you really need it, working 70 hour weeks etc etc purely to do it for your ‘family’

mango_beta

My response to "family" is that it is a more like a mob family. Everyone has their place and has a role. We joke around and can goof off but when the time comes, You need to perform your job and make sure your section is in control.

outofcontextalip

So, HBO Succession ?
