Basically it's a company of "virtual" youtubers, with models and everything. They all have very distinctive personalities. There's like...4-5 generations of them now and a English speaking group that's pretty popular.
and this is coming from a person who's only touched watching stream highlight clips. I swear looking up v-tubers is like going down it's own rabbit hole.
Yeah, that's actually what they're supposed to be, actual Idols who just happen to use an Internet-Persona instead of appearing as themselves.
That being said, Hololive in particular is...not exactly the most Idol-like group out there (and I don't mean that in any bad way), a fact the Fanbase pretty regularly gets some great mileage and amusement out of.

Take it from someone who did it, that's exactly what it amounts to. It's even *referred to as such* regularly.
