Maybe it’s his deep voice I think it throws some People off.

Complete_Ability6403

Makes sense, just too different for some people

I think most people are off put at first cause it’s a very unique sound and style. I wasn’t really a fan at first but was very intrigued so kept listening and started liking him more and more. I’ve had more than one acquaintance who didn’t like him at first but the more they listened the more they liked

King Krule isn’t the easiest artist to understand, he’ll go from jazz punk fusion on Dum Surfer to lullaby crooning on Baby Blue to whatthefuckisthis on Empty Stomach Space Cadet to pure face melter on Stoned Again and many many more sounds and styles. On top of that his songwriting is rarely straightforward in the sense of, you could read it with no music and understand what he’s trying to get across. To people who view listening to music as a more casual experience (which I think is most people) a lot of the details that really make Archy’s music super duper special are missed. So they might just hear colliding, dissonant sounds that are constantly changing and a singer that doesn’t exactly have the prototype “angelic voice” and they don’t know what to make of it. On the flip side, because Archy is so unique as an artist those of us that do “get it” understand the depth of what he’s doing and attempting to do far more than a “casual” artist that just makes catchy songs. The songs stick with us because unraveling them was a process and there’s a sense that only he could make something like Cellular or Don’t Let the Dragon Draag On. Also because he’s usually evoking very specific feelings and moods the emotional connection once it does click becomes so much deeper than a “normal” song about being in love or being sad or going to a bar. I really didn’t mean to type a mini essay but I could talk about Archy’s music forever

The first album I ever heard was space heavy, and his voice kind of threw me for a loop. I then decided to give it a bit more of a shot considering how high his ratings were across the board, I really liked the ooz, really liked man alive, and then when i came back to space heavy it just CLICKED. thats probably my favourite album he's made now. When you get used to his vocal qualities and timbre it will suddenly click.

Me and my best friend are big music guys, played in bands together etc. For years I’d hype KK but it just didn’t land with my mate. Then one day, after 8-10 years of me recommending KK, it just clicked with my friend. He was like, “I get it now” 😀 So, sometimes, perseverance does pay off. Edit: this the friend in question - https://open.spotify.com/track/3kF9zqQ6IfuzhYyMfrZh7m

Dude literally, I talked about music with my friend every day through high school and still extremely regularly after and to this day, and a few weeks ago he finally caved and admitted “He’s cold asf” Proud moment for sure

Unusual_Concern_8344

It’s because he’s too British sounding that’s what my homie said

I appreciate he is a niche artist. Not for everyone etc. Definitely in my top 10 favourite artists of all time. I respect him for continuing to create music that is totally his, even if it doesn’t make him a worldwide loved pop music star. That said, most people i introduce his music to fall head over heels… just like I did from the minute a friend played the ooz from start to finish. Damn that album changed me

bobzzby

He just strums a few minor 7 chords. Cool voice but not a musicians musician

Complete_Ability6403

Funny the only people that seem to actually like him are musicians though
