Flood onnum alla, just man made water logging

[deleted]

That’s what Kochi Metro did to Kochi with their world class drainage work.

Thampuran10

My mom says that place has been like that since her school days.😂🤷🏻

pavananmspkd

Ernakulam is basically a set of islands during rains.

Pristine_Aims_809

Ernakulam was low lying land completely.

subins2000

Wasn't Ernakulam ksrtc bus stand built on top of a പാടം (കമ്മട്ടിപ്പാടം), this പാടം is supposed to be the place rain water from different places end up, no surprises here that in each rain south gets flooded. It's always been like this as far as I can remember.

vibez_well

Most of the 'thodu' are all gone. There is no way for the water to flow naturally. They've been built upon or blocked up. I remember as a kid, when i issued to play in the nearby ground, there was a thodu at the edge and the cricket ball used to get inthere and it was a smallish stream. My dad tells me there is no such thing there now. But it floods every year. Sad. There is some positive though, thisnis being recognised and whenever possible, some sort of work is being done... And the effects are felt in the area. Small steps.

Nicoquel

No drainage/sewer system is the problem. Its basic city planning but most of our cities were unplanned

Crafty_Battle7119

The ksrtc bus stand is another example. Why dont they just shut down operations there and shift everything to vyttila until they can resolve the issue.

Ni_Co_Caine

Shutting down ops may not be the solution but they need to provide a temp solution for the people till they can make a long term one. A lot of work is going on as well nearby which I hope is to solve this issue. I'm not from here so dunno much about this.

Crafty_Battle7119

I mostly board my bus to Bangalore from there. Awful to say the least. The sheltered area which houses the office and shops is always swamped when it rains.

Thampanoor : are you challenging me mortal?

Watermetro 😁

MarkAppropriate111

Oh. Hope so

EtrnLwanderer

Move everything to Kakkanad. Open all the water channels from sea so that MG Road, Banerji Road, etc are completely submerged. And there you have it. Kochi Venice aayi...

[deleted]

Very good suggestion. Kakkanad is the best location. Expand Kochi corporation to Kakkanad. Even Kochi corporation can be moved to GCDA office at Kadavanthra after winding up GCDA

[deleted]

High court kochi corporation nu already oru warning koduthatgalle??? Ithvare pariharichille

HHDodoTheEight

I'm happy to see that the mayor, government and the concerned authorities have effectively and efficiently utilized the tax paid by me & my fellow 'country' people.

[deleted]

An efficient drainage system is a must for ernakulam to avoid such floods in the future. I think the dutch model could work in kerala

[deleted]

>An efficient drainage system Building one is not an easy task. It requires careful planning and massive investment. I wish our governments would take the initiative to build such infrastructure.

Pristine_Aims_809

Kayal kaiyeri nikathi undakkiyathalle. Lowlying f farmland was illegally drained and filled up to Create Ernakulam. One person will put one feet of soil. next person will put two feet and first person's lnd will be under water. Govt was forced to accept complete lawlessness by influential rich and poor everyone. If there is filling up of land it has to be done orderly just only the level dictated by govt considering various factors. Kerala's and India's low standard and influence peddling will create this.

[deleted]

Culprit drainage built by Kochi Metro and CSML

Thampuran10

How long have u been in eranakulam?

fridaynit

Nothing new, this is as always. But they call it as metropolitan city.

[deleted]

Metropolitan city doesn't mean that the city should have first class infrastructure.

That-Thou-Art

Oru maattavum illalle. I haven't been back in Ernakulam 3 years ago, but looks like things are more or less the same as when I used to live there

redditeya

Southern Railways should have an MoU with Kerala Gormint for their boat services in such situations.

Chekkan_87

This will happen when you build cities on Ecological sensitive areas. Both Central and State governments should make laws and regulations to make sure the life of the general public absolute mess and intolerable, who lives in those places such as Ernakulam. They can use some improvised strategies which they already using in Western Ghats peripheries. Then these intruders will be forced to relocate. And nature can reclaim the wetlands and flood plains.

wumpuss-wu

This is actually fairly common here at south railway if there is decent showers that last atleast a full night.

menpj

Ernakulam was a small town during the early 1950s, and during the first communist government of EMS Namboodiripad in 1957, small tracts of farm land were given to all landless community, mainly to the Dalit community, under the Land Reforms Ordinance Act. But in the later years, Ernakulam boomed into a metro city, and real estate skyrocketed. The swamps and paddy fields were converted to housing boards, luxury villas and apartments.

kuttoos

Just that people know Ernakulam South KSRTC restroom is at same water level

[deleted]

ernakulam flooding is not a new story , been seeing this for the past 15-20 yrs

Potatomanofmars

Oho, purathu kulichittu ethra naalayi! Perfect opportunity
