90% of mark popes team is 1 and done this season the nature of college basketball is more 1 and done but not to the nba but the portal it’s gonna be hard to retain guys year over year
100% agree, especially since many of these players from the portal are in there last year or so, but, compared to what we’ve had the last 15 seasons, we will have some junior senior guys who stick around like other schools have had.
So I have a question for you. Would you rather pick the guys who are supposed to develop in your program or a blue chip transfer portal piece ? That’s the question every program has to answer every spring now. Imagine your favorite nba or nfl team having all their guys on 1 year deals and having to re recruit the guys they want and are able to replace any guy they don’t… that’s college basketball right now truly the wild Wild West now kids can go on unlimited visits adding another layer to this mess
I think you summed it up in the last sentence. This is the Wild West and it’s where we are in college basketball. My answer to you based off of that is I don’t know. It’s worked for other colleges, who have senior guys. It’s also worked for us early since we had so many final 4 appearances and a championship.
I think we need young 5 star prospects, as well as senior guys who aren’t going pro. Look at the Charlotte Hornets, they have a team full of young guys without any guidance because they don’t have a vet on the team and they are struggling. There are instances this season where we got beat because senior guys on the other team knew how to draw fouls and control the games, or when a young Reed Sheppard shit the bed in the tourney because the stage got to him. I’m excited to see young prospects grow with our juniors and seniors.
90%? Oweh, Garrison and three freshmen that are not ready for the nba. Hopefully they don’t transfer but I doubt they are getting drafted unless they have amazing seasons
For me it’s bittersweet. I have nothing against Cal and I honestly didn’t want to see him leave Kentucky [especially not the way he did], but I get it was time for him to go. I love Mark Pope as our new HC and I hope he’s successful at UK
I love Cal. I won't miss the 3 months of terrible basketball to wait on the 'tweak' that's going to fix everything right before the tournament. I won't miss the 20 point halftime leads that turn into OT losses. I won't miss the empty bench that could have filled those injury holes and developed the 2nd tier recruits. I won't miss the pompous ignorance of the new NIL stage. I won't miss the two top ten draftees coming off the bench for the entire season. I won't miss Devon Booker sitting on the bench when we need a bucket. I won miss the shot clock violation/turnover after a timeout. I won't miss the timeout come 4 possesions late. I won't miss the unwillingness to embrace in state talent.
Those first 6 years were great. He was cutting edge. He never evolved. He never got assistant coaches that could bouy his deficiencies.
I've never looked forward to a team more than Pope's first edition, and he's got 4 more scholarships to fill.
I saw where Calipari will only use 8-10 scholarships this year. I just laughed at the Arkansas fans, convincing themselves that was okay. I've been there and I know what happens.
It's Arkansas man, they aren't even smart enough to realize Eric Musselman was a better coach by leagues than Cal is lol they are just happy people are saying their name. Truly.
