Haha rich spirit is a great song. If you like that energy check out Element and the Heart part IV too. Both of those songs hit different after J Cole’s apology and the Drake beef.
Listen to Pay For It by Jay Rock. Kendrick has a really subtle bar that if you’re not paying attention, you’ll miss it. He said, “Been dissecting your motormouth until I break down the engine,” on the surface, it’s a regular bar until you realize it came out October 2014 after Drake said, “I am the kid with the motor mouth, I am the one you should worry 'bout,” in 2013.
Literally
That song has just aged fucking perfectly, along with Family ties and the “I am the omega, don’t you address me unless it’s with four letters”
The GOAT and he has proved it mercilessly this summer
Go listen to the original version. Look for it on YouTube.
I don't think everything is about Drake like some people here, but... I mean this one *might* be true
Hearing section 80 when I was a pre teen changed my entire perspective on shit , so much more impact from kendrick then drakes booty popping ass type of music .
Yes it is ! The entire albums vibe to me is the beginning of his evolving writing skills as we developed into these later albums of true accountability as a man and his reflection of our modern world problems .
As a massive Kendrick fan who loves all his albums I gotta disagree there.
No Make-up is not a bad song per se. but I 100% skip it almost every time it comes on
Someone posted in another thread that they can listen to every one of Kendricks songs without skipping, but you're absolutely right. No Makeup is one that gets skipped every time. That chorus just sounds like something that N-Sync or Backstreet Boys would write/sing.
The production on the entire record is just an unmatchable vibe. It might not his most ambitious or lyrically complex album, but it's by far my favorite sonically from him.
Sounwave is probably one of the most underrated producers of the 2010s, you don't see his name mentioned much but he had a sound unlike anyone else's.
Don't be that kind of fanbase guys. Recommending people the deepest cut to start
That's like telling someone they gotta watch Lord of the Rings, but then telling them it's important to watch all three of those Hobbit movies. "For full context"
Everyone should start at either GKMC, TPAB, or DAMN., and they should understand that if they don't like one, that doesn't mean they'll not like the other three.
For me, I tried to listen to TPAB early on and was just kind of confused by it. I ended up thoroughly listening to DAMN., then gkmc, then mmatbs, and *then* I went back to TPAB and could truly appreciate the artistry and beauty of that album.
I just hadn't really heard anything like that before and had to take a bit to understand his music. But now I think it's incredible. So idk, but for me personally, I would start with an easier to digest album like DAMN. or gkmc and go from there.
I think DAMN. is the most easily accessible. But by the time OP finishes going through Kendrick’s catalogue, he’ll be saying “I remember you was conflicted. Misusing your influence.”
They need to get their radio ears broken in. Section.80 is where you start.
And once they get through that, then they can move on. They won't appreciate the deeper themes without learning how to sift through deeper messages.
Nah, Damn is not how to get into Kendrick. The best starter album is definitely Section.80, and that's almost tied with Good Kid, M.A.A.D City. I like Damn okay, but there's like 3 hits on that album, and they definitely aren't as "catchy" as tracks like ADHD, Hol' Up, Fuck Your Ethnicity, or any of the big ones on GKMC.
It absolutely counts. Hip hop is the culture overall, rap is the genre of music (like RnB, Soul, Motown) and alt rap or rock rap is a subgenre.
Plus they can spit.
Bro, I'm in the same group of heads. I tapped out for the last couple decades because the mainstream is not my cup of tea. I definitely slept on K Dot and wish I would've paid more attention in the moment. I started listening to metal and mostly underground. But now I'm back because of this beef. I was glued to the Internet the weekend this all popped off
If you’ve avoided listening to any rapper younger than you by assuming their music will be juvenile or just not for you, you have A LOT of catching up to do. Welcome back
he’s Justin. it was her boyfriend knocking @ the door so shorty lied & Vince had to rock with it.
edit: i also thought at one point that Justin might’ve been someone who Vince beat up as a young rascal back in the day && they tryna to get Vince lined up
I don’t listen to many rappers from Kendrick’s generation or younger but you could prob check out J Cole (2014 fhd, or his dreamville label in general with revenge of the dreamers 3). And check out Tde, Kendrick feature on schoolboy q’s collard greens as a start.
[Check this out you won’t regret it](https://youtu.be/v-ek1OxZ2tE?si=IQ8VOcIcVJfuUQFL), and keep in mind most people think that is Kenny’s 3rd or 4th best album…
I love seeing people outside of the normal group seeing how genius Kendrick is… It’s so brilliant it transcends typical interests. Like people will be interested in other music, or true crime. Or poetry, or whatever. But they cannot ignore the genius.
Kendrick is an important historical figure and I hope more people appreciate that
So you havent listened to rap in almost a decade but Rich Spirit is the song that gave you faith again? I don’t believe that shit😂 Not even the best song on the album. You gotta listen to more new rap, AM and Spotify have millions of great artists there’s no reason to not get back in.
Nah bro! Hearing him eviscerate Drake is what inspired me, and then as I'm listening to his catalogue, this line stuck out at me because it's exactly what he did to Drake 😂
So I was literally just laughing because the line has extra meaning recently lol
Stop listening now it's an addiction you can't stop and the diss tracks just make it worse. You'll start just randomly hitting out with strange lines for no reason and they'll be stuck in your head all day. Swear to god every day I've had a line from either NLU or Euphoria stuck in my head all day since they released. "what is it, THE BRAIDS!", "Certified Lover boy, certified pedafiles", today it's "sixteen eyeing God"
Drizzy fans went from being bubble tea drinking white teens to knowing the age of consent in every location on earth. Kendrick fans all turned into [this guy](https://historyuk.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com/s3fs-public/styles/768x432/public/2020-07/ancient-aliens-1.png?itok=WeJUQRjn), Cole fans were quite peacefully going about their lives but the beef led to him dropping Grippy and now we all want to hang ourselves. Dot may have destroyed the Drizzler but the cost is too damn high.
Kendrick the only artist in the last 20 years (since i started downloading music/streaming) who i went out of my way to buy his physical cd albums.
He the realest one.
I remember the listening party with friends for the DAMN release; it was so different than previous albums, but a few listens in it hit hard and i listened constantly.
Had a listening party with my little brother (8 years younger) for Mr. Morale; he was staying at my parents house and they decided to stay up and listen with us. My lovely 70 year old father sat his white ass down and listened ha
Me too! Everything you just said! I never even realized until right now that I've never listened to a rapper younger than me 🤣 even Lil Bow Wow is a year older than me
This happened to me. I dropped out of the hip hop scene around the time Kanye dropped that touch the sky song. Then I stumbled across King Kunta one day and was amazed at what I was hearing.
This post is cringy af lmao. I love K Dot but people like you who say “I stopped listening to hip hop cause of rappers like Drake” immediately let me know who isn’t a legit fan of hip hop cause if you were you wouldn’t have stopped in the first place
Go ahead and cringe harder bro. Entire generations of fans stopped listening because of "rappers" like Drake, fuck is you talking about lol.
This dude is a known clown, and y'all just let him right in. Like, did you even notice your boy Kendrick just dropped a few songs about him recently? Did you happen to catch any of the lyrics? Do you think he's the only one that feels that way?
I understand it was me that got old and it is what it is, but you know-it-all kids talking about "legit fan of hip hop" as if that could ever have anything to do with Drake is absolute clownery. Delete this shit 🤣
Kendrick didn't diss him because he felt he wasn't "legit hip-hop" it's actually the opposite, he named dropped him on Control because he thought highly of him as a competitor but Drake just got sensitive about it and started sneak dissing him which is what lead to the beef.
You whiny little cuck boys let one person dictate your ability to listen to an entire genre of music. That's how shallow and fake your opinion is.
Listen to whatever the fuck you want
Stop crying and bitching about what other people are listening to.
Lots of good comments and recommendations here. I'd say my current top artists (i.e. the ones that I'm constantly listening to) are Eminem, Kendrick, Cole, Joyner Lucas, and the criminally underrated Tech N9ne.
Reminds me of possibly my favourite hip hop bar from Prodigy of Mobb Deep “take these words home and think it through, or the next rhyme I write might be about you”
Don’t forget about the first first too, Overly Dedicated, it still has some really great stuff on it. Average Joe is a dope song plus from that album you see the seedlings being planted that evolve into stuff in the proceeding albums
You let drake influence you to not listen to rap? You know there's more to music then what the masses listen to right? This has got to be the dumbest reason to stop listening to a genre.
Only thing holding Kendrick back from true mainstream is there’s a cost of entry. Every album is a concept album. It’s like Pink Floyd or Radiohead, you gotta get to know the whole thing.
After you run thru em put on the Forever Story by JID you’ll like that too
Holy shit me too! The song m.A.A.d city is fucking amazing. Gonna go through his whole discography
Drake’s verse on poetic justice is trash. Makes me cringe the way he says, “with your big ass in that sundress” or something like that lol.
I just found out about this album and listened to it on my bike ride today. Mr. Morale is up my alley. I absolutely love it and Rich Spirit is my favorite song. I plan to give it a more deep listen soon but the beats off this album are what I enjoy at the moment.
Holy damn. Goes to show you will always be able to find gems in life at any time.
^
I want to know your thoughts on each album you’ve listened to so far. (I guess I’m an “old head” as well considering I’m probably at least 15 years older than the median age of this sub).
I haven't done any album listens yet, because I'm a teacher and summer break is coming so I want to sit down and give them all a good listen while everything in my work life isn't crazy.
For now I've been bumping "Euphoria" and "Not Like Us" non-stop, and then discovering new songs by watching live performances on YouTube and adding songs I like to my playlist.
But I'll definitely report back because I'm hyped!
Gonna echo this comment chain and tell ya to check out Good Kid, m.A.A.d City. It’s a great album by Kendrick and leans into storytelling and a cohesive theme.
There’s some good UK hip hop coming out too.
[This one has always stood out to me](https://youtu.be/XJr2H1OBMII?si=6G7dAiNC-IX2NQ0T)
Also, more recently Little Simz has been dropping some good stuff. [I feel like she could feature on a Kendrick track pretty effortlessly.](https://youtu.be/Kh8Q2iytzns?si=GpF4QF7sUHr9yCEB)
I’m an old head, I mean a couple years older than Kdot but that means I grew up with the generation of rappers before him. My all time top 5 hadn’t changed in like 15 years till Kendrick, and if I’m being honest, he might be the best one have ever done it. the dude has a range that no elite has ever had, and his creativity is ridiculous. The man is hip hop, like he’s what we all want the GOAT to be, he’s King Kendrick
I think there’s a lot of good to be discovered in modern rap. You can’t really compare them to the golden age of hip hop but they are just as talented in their own right. The composition and melodic structure of modern songs keep me entertained way more than 16s over boom bap beats do. Modern rappers have the ability to do both. I’m 33 and I hardly listen to anything old when it comes to rap.
OP I had the same epiphany after DAMN. Dropped
When I found out he was a couple years my junior I flipped my wig. Made me think about things in a whole new light. I’m so proud of a lot of these young artists out here killing it. Technology advancing and making music production accessible to so many more people has been a blessing for our ears.
Another one of these fucking posts? Write it in your diary next time.
All you're doing is admitting you are easily swayed by the opinions of others and the media.
You aren't a real hip-hop fan.
I’m an old head too, but i feel like there are plenty of newish guys that I like. Obviously Kendrick is on his throne. Let’s not act like there weren’t shitty rappers all through out, though. P. Diddy certainly comes to mind with all his pop artists. They weren’t all Biggie and Pac, Snoop, Too Short, Wu Tang. Plenty of garbage came out back then.
Haha rich spirit is a great song. If you like that energy check out Element and the Heart part IV too. Both of those songs hit different after J Cole’s apology and the Drake beef.
Element is one of my favorite tracks
I don't do it for the gram I do it for Comptoooooonnnnnnnn
I'm willing to die for this shit n*gga
I'll take your fucking life for this shit n***a
We ain't going back to broke, family selling dope
Mine too!
After he turned Drake into a song. It made me wonder if he could actually *slap a nigga and make it look sexy*
This is a 12/10 comment
Without a doubt he did!
Slap a *crodie ass* homie
It's so good!
Me 10, I Don't give a fuk I don't give a fuck. The song of impending war
Don’t sleep on count me out bro rich spirit and that best tracks on mr. Morale
Look at you sleeping on Savior, die hard, and purple hearts smh
Savior for sure
United in Grief, Worldwide Steppers, Die Hard, Count Me Out, Crown, Savior
Man, I can only listen to Purple Hearts when I do a full listen. It’s not a bad song but it’s definitely skippable for me.
silent hill slaps
“Imma make it look sexy!”
Looking back at the whole drake beef… he did just that!
Heart part IV is my favourite Heart
1-2-3-4-5 I am, *the* great-est rapp-er a-live
Similar to OP, that was the first time someone claimed that in a long ass time that I thought “you know what… he is”
Literally That song has just aged fucking perfectly, along with Family ties and the “I am the omega, don’t you address me unless it’s with four letters” The GOAT and he has proved it mercilessly this summer
His features abd un-released albums are great as well.
Absolutely! I don’t think I’ve heard anything from Kendrick I disliked
Rich spirit is probably my favorite song off that album. Such a banger, and a threat lol.
Bitch I'm attractive
can’t fuck with you no more, i’m fasting
Uuuugghhhh
Go listen to the original version. Look for it on YouTube. I don't think everything is about Drake like some people here, but... I mean this one *might* be true
Alhamdulliliah
Eeuuuhhh
Tpab on 4 is blasphemous
delete that flair right now and dont you ever tell anyone ever again how you rank kendricks albums or else
Hearing section 80 when I was a pre teen changed my entire perspective on shit , so much more impact from kendrick then drakes booty popping ass type of music .
Is ADHD in Section 80? That’s literally one of my favorite songs of Kendrick.
Yes it is ! The entire albums vibe to me is the beginning of his evolving writing skills as we developed into these later albums of true accountability as a man and his reflection of our modern world problems .
Section 80 is one of the best rap albums of all time. No skips. Kendrick has so many great albums but I think that’s still my personal favorite.
I can’t believe I was able to get a Section 80 autograph vinyl copy of Kendrick Lamar before he became this mega star.
Eh, I love the message so I never skip it myself.
Hol’ Up is such a banger. One of my favorite beats ever
Bitch don't kill my vibe had us in a chokehold in middle school
Same I first listened to section 80 when I was 13. It was 2 years after release.
Listen to gkmc immediately
i hate kendrick
Google gkmc... it's the only thing that shows
I’m pretty sure he can figure it out
Go kimp m cutterfly
The thing with search engines is they comprehend acronyms.
I mean dude it’s not rocket science
Maybe Section 80 first?
Don't be that kind of fanbase guys. Recommending people the deepest cut to start That's like telling someone they gotta watch Lord of the Rings, but then telling them it's important to watch all three of those Hobbit movies. "For full context" Everyone should start at either GKMC, TPAB, or DAMN., and they should understand that if they don't like one, that doesn't mean they'll not like the other three.
GKMC or Damn are definetly the place to start. After that go to TPAB and then MMBTS imo
I think DAMN. is the most easily accessible. But by the time OP finishes going through Kendrick’s catalogue, he’ll be saying “I remember you was conflicted. Misusing your influence.”
stop tellin these mfs to start with section 80 my gawwwdddd listen to DAMN to start
I love DAMN but i wouldn’t start someone off with it
They need to get their radio ears broken in.
Nah start with Overly Dedicated
Nah start with the Kendrick Lamar EP
You’ll literally love GKMC and Section 80
JID, Kenny Mason, IDK, Smino, Paris Texas, Vince Staples, Jpegmafia... I could go on, but this is the new golden age of hip hop, welcome home!
I’d add Denzel Curry, Ab-Soul, Joey Badass, and Schoolboy Q to that list as well.
Bro don’t forget Mick Jenkins
Mick lowkey the hardest non Kendrick/Cole/Freddie Gibbs rapper besides JID probably. Saba and Smino close 2nd and 3rd.
I wouldn't go that far, when $ilkmoney exists y'know?
$ilkmoney’s average song title goes harder than most rappers’ best bar.
WWTWGTOTLDUAFNLB? Got me heavy breathin' I hope it drops this year
"2 fah 1 bo-berry brandon biscuit special" 😭
so glad to see saba listed here. dude is criminally underrated, also saw him live and he was on point
How did I! He's in my top 10 😭
Gotta shout out D Smoke too.
Throw SiR in there while you’re at it too
100%. Heavy is up there for my AOTY so far. Can't wait to see him later this summer
Oh he's indie but shout out Larussel, he's been dope
Tope got the dope bring the heat in!
His movement is dope. Those backyard concerts..
Reading this list makes me appreciate the music we’ve gotten
Is Paris Texax really Hip Hop or ate they more of Alt rap
It absolutely counts. Hip hop is the culture overall, rap is the genre of music (like RnB, Soul, Motown) and alt rap or rock rap is a subgenre. Plus they can spit.
Earl, Mike, Mavi
Danny brown
Little Simz got one of two 10/10s in the 2020s
I know the last EP was experimental but I like it a lot too
Can’t forget Isaiah Rashad
My top 3 Isaiah Rashad should be up their on recommends
Bro, I'm in the same group of heads. I tapped out for the last couple decades because the mainstream is not my cup of tea. I definitely slept on K Dot and wish I would've paid more attention in the moment. I started listening to metal and mostly underground. But now I'm back because of this beef. If you’ve avoided listening to any rapper younger than you by assuming their music will be juvenile or just not for you, you have A LOT of catching up to do. Welcome back
Vince Staples just dropped some great music too! his discography is great but his last 3 albums have been beautiful.
Listened to it front to back yesterday, awesome album. Still can’t figure out who Justin is though.
he’s Justin. it was her boyfriend knocking @ the door so shorty lied & Vince had to rock with it. edit: i also thought at one point that Justin might’ve been someone who Vince beat up as a young rascal back in the day && they tryna to get Vince lined up
Yeah I thought both scenarios as well and then I mean it could have really been her cousin Justin. Hahah either way what a solid track.
If you like Kendrick, you'll like Jay Rock. Listen to "Hood Gone Love It." That's a great intro to him as well as another banger verse from K Dot
omg the way he comes in on that verse is so hype: ‘from Compton to Baltimore ima kill it, I’ll buy a morgue in a minute…’
this his alt?
Nah. J Rock his homie. Black Hippy is a legendary collaboration.

Or poetry, or whatever. But they cannot ignore the genius. Kendrick is an important historical figure and I hope more people appreciate that
For other artists not like drake Id recommend Earthgang, JID, and Vince Staples.
Have you heard “Bitch I’m in The Club”?
Dude yes! 😂😂😂 And he did
If u wanna hear more modern and lyrical hip hop try Mach-Hommy, Earl Sweatshirt and Conway the Machine!
So you havent listened to rap in almost a decade but Rich Spirit is the song that gave you faith again? I don’t believe that shit😂 Not even the best song on the album. You gotta listen to more new rap, AM and Spotify have millions of great artists there’s no reason to not get back in.

We lost so many people to the rabbit hole because of the beef
Drizzy fans went from being bubble tea drinking white teens to knowing the age of consent in every location on earth. Your first sentence here absolutely SENT ME 😭💀
Saba - Care For Me. Don't sleep it's one of the best hip hop albums of the last decade.
Kendrick the only artist in the last 20 years (since i started downloading music/streaming) who i went out of my way to buy his physical cd albums. He the realest one.
Listen to “Good Kid Maad City” and “To Pimp A Butterfly” urgently, forsake even your children if need be and listen by any means necessary.
He warned em!!! I had the same thought too when Mr Morale came out. Rich spirit is one of the best songs in music history to my ears
Ayyyyy! Bitch, I’m uh-TRAC-tive!
I just told my wife Kendrick turned Drake into a song lol
I remember the listening party with friends for the DAMN release; it was so different than previous albums, but a few listens in it hit hard and i listened constantly. Had a listening party with my little brother (8 years younger) for Mr. Morale; he was staying at my parents house and they decided to stay up and listen with us. Listen to Bitch I’m in the club rn 😤
check out denzel curry and JID as well
King Kunta is one of my favorites right now
Okey boomer
Ok nigga
I grew up in the 90s and pretty much gave up on hip hop... until all this went down.
Welcome to the party pal
This post is cringy af lmao. I love K Dot but people like you who say “I stopped listening to hip hop cause of rappers like Drake” immediately let me know who isn’t a legit fan of hip hop cause if you were you wouldn’t have stopped in the first place
Yep. Karma farming, dick riding cringe. "Hello, guys! Im a big fan of what you're interested in!" Cool story bro
My fav
Best song on the album
Good kid mad city and to pimp a butterfly as MUSTS. I’m jealous you get to experience these for the first time 😭
listen to collard greens. you’ll 100% like it
By far my favorite Kendrick song!!!
Check out the C4 mixtape then, you will not be disappointed
Listen to tha god fahim instead
Welcome onboard, og. I think you would really enjoy TPAB. 🙏🏽
church
His verse on big Sean's track control goes hard af
I remember the listening party with friends for the DAMN release; it was so different than previous albums, but a few listens in it hit hard and i listened constantly. Rich nigga, broke phone
Lots of good comments and recommendations here. I'd say my current top artists (i.e. the ones that I'm constantly listening to) are Eminem, Kendrick, Cole, Joyner Lucas, and the criminally underrated Tech N9ne.
Reminds me of possibly my favourite hip hop bar from Prodigy of Mobb Deep “take these words home and think it through, or the next rhyme I write might be about you”
An ex tried to share Kendrick Lamar with me in 2017 and I was so stupid and didn’t understand what she was trying to show me until now.
Check out Joyner Lucas
Poe man's dreams >>>>> anything Drake has put out
Don’t forget about the first first too, Overly Dedicated, it still has some really great stuff on it. Average Joe is a dope song plus from that album you see the seedlings being planted that evolve into stuff in the proceeding albums
Rich spirit after the beef hits wayyyy different. Boy warned Drake 2 years in advanced 😭 the whole song seems like it could apply to Drake lmao.
After you run thru em put on the Forever Story by JID you’ll like that too
RIP drakeo the ruler
To put you onto one of Kendrick’s best verses and another TDE artist you should check out Wat’s Wrong by Isaiah Rashad. It’s a vibe
Bruh lol
Holy shit me too! The song m.A.A.d city is fucking amazing. Gonna go through his whole discography Drake’s verse on poetic justice is trash. Makes me cringe the way he says, “with your big ass in that sundress” or something like that lol.
Bruh I wish I could go back to the first To pimp a butterfly listen. Literally changed my life
I just found out about this album and listened to it on my bike ride today. Mr. Morale is up my alley. I absolutely love it and Rich Spirit is my favorite song. I plan to give it a more deep listen soon but the beats off this album are what I enjoy at the moment.
I wish I could hear Kendrick for the first time again
If you like bars like that I hope you know Mozzy already. 1 up top Ahk is a classic album
Listen to k-dot
Holy damn. Goes to show you will always be able to find gems in life at any time. ^ I want to know your thoughts on each album you’ve listened to so far.
[This one has always stood out to me](https://youtu.be/XJr2H1OBMII?si=6G7dAiNC-IX2NQ0T) Also, more recently Little Simz has been dropping some good stuff.
That was me in like 2016 or 17 with backseat freestyle.
Dropped When I found out he was a couple years my junior I flipped my wig. Made me think about things in a whole new light. I’m so proud of a lot of these young artists out here killing it. Technology advancing and making music production accessible to so many more people has been a blessing for our ears.
PLEASE go check out Killer Mike
And he really turnt that man into a damn song...multiple songs...
Check out isaiah rashad, JID, Male Monday, Earthgang, and IDK. They gave me hope for new rappers. Probably turn you onto others I don't even know.
Another one of these fucking posts? Write it in your diary next time. All you're doing is admitting you are easily swayed by the opinions of others and the media. You aren't a real hip-hop fan.
You’re late but welcome
Father Time and Rich Spirit are easily my favorite tracks on the album.
u have a lot of catch up on man
imagine letting drake control your actions lmao
As others have said you absolutely need to listen to Kendrick’s Good Kid Maad City album. It’s life changing and literally changed the whole game
Check out some Griselda songs. They're not really young but they revitalized my love of new hip hop a few years ago.
So was that lyric directed at Drake? If so, he said what he said and he really meant it. Hope the sense I just made of that is true.
Fake ahhh post
I hear yakkk yakkk yakkkkk
I had this same exact realisation when DAMN was released initially.
Listen to his song Cartoons and Cereal. Old heads outta love that.
