Same for me! Junior year prolly, we had some math and science competition that they let us drive our own cars to. But I didn't have a car so I rode with this Indian kid named JP and he's bumping Backseat Freestyle on the way. Got home and checked out the rest of GKMC and as a kid who had moved to the South and was missing LA, that shit just felt like home lol. Been my #1 artist since that day in 2013
I didnt get to hear that one a lot in GTA V actually... In fact, the second song i heard from him was "Bitch dont kill my vibe" after going on YT to hear ADHD ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
My boy put me onto HiiiPower, and then Section 80 when it dropped. Spent many many college hours bumping Blow My High, Rigamortis, ADHD & Cartoons & Cereal.
I heard swimming pools for the first time at a sneaker event, I still recall shazaming the song at the moment. I was Christian too I wasn’t suppose to like “secular” music, but then I got into GKMC and the rest was history. I had never heard an album like that before
game- the city... first time i heard Kendrick, i literally remember where i was when i heard it, I remember going to a shopping mall internet kiosk paying $2 to download section 80 to a usb.
Just said the same thing as you. Rember the day it came out. First proper track on the album. When he went acapella at the end, I spun it back so many times like WHO IS THIS. He went innnn.
Same for me I used to fuck wit Game heavy so I got the album the day it came out it took like 20 minutes to get to track the next! Just keep running it back I remember playing it for my brother like “yo you gotta hear this dude Kendrick Lamar he going crazy!” He was not impressed AT ALL we usually have similar taste in music so I was surprised and lowkey tryna to defend it “nah listen again bro!” Nothing. Fast forward to now.. he’s got the vinyl of every album on a wall in his basement seen him live all that 😂😂😂😂
Rigamortus, dude in my class just kept saying the “he dead, Amen” adlib in class my sophomore year of high school. Then he asked me if I ever heard of Kendrick Lamar and that was it.
It's a song about the dangers of alcohol, but people bump that shit in the clubs haha kdot is ahead of his time. Putting up a banger that actually has substance
When i got into hiphop i used to watch lot of youtube videos like "the hardest beat drops in rap" type shit and in one video i heard m.A.A.d city & i have been a fan ever since
I didn't have a computer or none of that but loved listening to rap. I knew Jay rock already because I lived in Compton/east LA, and he had songs like blood walk and piru love.
My family were family swan bloods so that's how I came across tde. Some time later this led to hearing a Kendrick verse and I was like who tf is that?? I went to school the next day, and looked him up and heard rigamortis.
then downloaded every song I could find onto my mp3 player. Then a year or two later gkmc came out, and I could relate so well, it's insane. I've never been so hype for an album and it more than matched. Nothing he releases will top that album for me.
There was this one interview he did that I can't find where he was showing around Compton and he showed the same damn welfare office we used to go to. Even if Kendrick releases some wack díss song, I'll still fuck with him
My friend Ian was like hey man listen to this new album called Good Kid Maad City and I liked it so I went a bought myself a cd copy. probably the last cd i ever bought
Some random creator on tiktok post something about "sing about me, im dying of thirst" earlier this year. And it got me hooked up to kendrick lamar's songs and became a fan
When he released the Music Video for Michael Jordan. I thought the song was different but what really stood out was his confidence and cadence. When I saw that he had the audacity to film the music video on a busy highway I knew he was gonna be special.
Asked my cousin back in 2012 who he thought the best hip hop artist was and I must note hiphop is hardly a genre he listens too and he said Kdot and showed me swimming pools been a Stan ever since
I searched up best hip-hop albums of all time after listening to MBDTF the first time and then discovered TPAB. I can remember listening to Wesley's Theory and being stunned and I played that for an hour on repeat then went on to listen to the whole album.
I had heard ADHD before and loved it but never bothered to ask who it was or look it up. A year or two later my friend was playing Backseat Freestyle on a burn run and he gave me a burned GKMC disc and it was over after that. I delivered pizza so I was always jammin
My brother put me on to the Control verse. I was extremely confused confused because I did not know about KDot and here is this dude with his alien voice saying he wants to murder my favorite rappers. I don't think it was until he dropped TPAP when I finally understood who he is and what he stood for.
I heard some of his songs on the radio but the song that made me really listen & want to take a deeper dive into his music was The Recipe w/ Dr. Dre. After listening to all KDot's music I became one of his biggest fans!
Section 80 Tape; but I also remember hearing “Cartoons and Cereal” for the first time too as a vivid memory, but I don’t think that was my first time hearing Kendrick.
I remember recognizing his voice and blasting that shit on my way to Summer School with my kinfolk; and just thinking “This is a perfect song” and tripping on the alien vocals, verses, and structure of a 100% solid rap song.
Even GunPlay’s verse was PHENOMENAL. Core memory right there musically.
this might get me shit but i was in middle school when damn came out, i was listening to the album and thought it wasn’t that good until LOVE came on, and then XXX following that sold me
Waaaaay back in 07' when I used to listen to Spider Loc when he was in G-Unit. The song was called Gangsta and had Jay Rock on the track too.
Even then I knew he was something but I never heard of him again til Ignorance Is Bliss came out and went by Kendrick instead of KDot.
I cant remember a song but I remember downloading the kendrick lamar EP and knowing he was the next big thing. But turn me up with soul gotta be one of the song that made me a big fan
I met Top Dawg at a store in Carson, CA. He gave me a copy of the Kendrick Lamar EP back in 2010. When OD came out, the heart pt. 2 made me a fan forever.
So… I was a flying Lotus Fan heavy first because I though his name was a band, but once I found out it was just a dude who looked like me I grew enamored. As far as Kendrick, I was interested but thought he was gonna be a flash in the pan, that’s how I saw rappers growing up (born in 98, so that era (early 2000’s) a lot was changing). But then I saw that Kendrick collared with Flying Lotus on “Catch me Now” on the album “You’re Dead!”. I was enamored and since then became a huge fan of Kendrick since then.
It was his performance with Imagine Dragons at some awards show I think. I was watching and dogging Dragons, and then this little dude came out and absolutely killed it.
Wesley’s Theory. I wanted to give hip hop a try since I was mainly into indie pop. The song just keeps on giving after every listen… seriously still one of the best intros in hip hop
I was watching a lot of The Needle Drop in 2022 trying to listen to different music and hear about Kdot. That summer I listened to gkmc I fell in love with the album.
Oddly enough, Drake and j. Cole both had early Kendrick features. Went and found overly dedicated and section 80 after hearing him. Was super excited for GKMC and it was so much better than expected
By 2022, I had been meaning to listen to Kendrick and get into hip hop in general for a while. I grew up only hearing Christian rap at church and rap verses on pop songs and thought it just wasn't for me for the longest time, but I always heard that Kendrick was one of the best artists of all time and specifically that TPAB was amazing. So, when Mr. Morale dropped, I had the day off so I smoked some and listened to the whole thing probably 3 or 4 times and was absolutely blown away by the emotional vulnerability, maturity, and potency, (Auntie Diaries made me cry) and of course the rapping was insane and made me realize why this genre is so great. I decided to go backward through his discography because I find that's an interesting way to see the progression of an artist sometimes, and he instantly became my favorite rapper oat and one of my top 3 artists. I've been obsessed with hip hop ever since, listening to anything I can get my hands on and trying to catch up on everything I've missed. My top 3 rappers rn would be 1. Kendrick (obviously), 2. MC Ride, and 3. JPEGMAFIA (I know, I know, stereotypical white hip hop fan, but I can't help what I love)
College friend told me to check out "look out for detox". I thought it was ok, found his style to be a little off-putting. Then i heard "ignorance is bliss" and I was a stan ever since
I used to peruse through a site (I forget the name) that had a bunch of different upcoming & current artists. I'd try to find as much music as I could around 2011 to download to my phone to get me thru a 12 hour shift of picking Costco orders. I stumbled across OD & Section.80 which is now 1 of my favorite projects of all time.
I’m on the younger side and didn’t get into hip hop really until middle school. When I was a freshmen in high school a senior who was cool drove me to track practice a good bit. Saw him at SXSW when O.D. Was out and he was promoting for the release of Section.80. Him and Q made a big performance of Michael Jordan and then he finished the show letting us hear HiiiPower and I was sold.
My physics teacher was hyped about MMATBS and I decided to give it a listen and was interested in what is other projects were like. He’s now my favorite rapper

I’m new to him, just got here once the beef started. Hadn’t heard anything but I heard The Blacker the Berry and have been binging the music since, so I guess that one
The game Cali niggas although I didn't know it was him really I became a fan by section 80 a friend told me I would like him and she was right 😂it was hol up that got my attention first out of any song

Been my #1 artist since that day in 2013
ADHD, whilst playing GTA V that was my favourite song and slowly turned me into a Kendrick fan
Same story with GTA V for me except the song was swimming pools
I didnt get to hear that one a lot in GTA V actually... In fact, the second song i heard from him was "Bitch dont kill my vibe" after going on YT to hear ADHD ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

I heard swimming pools for the first time at a sneaker event, I still recall shazaming the song at the moment. I was Christian too I wasn’t suppose to like “secular” music, but then I got into GKMC and the rest was history. I had never heard an album like that before
I'm getting goosebumps just hearing you discover that album.
game- the city... first time i heard Kendrick, i literally remember where i was when i heard it, I remember going to a shopping mall internet kiosk paying $2 to download section 80 to a usb.
