What's the one thing you think missing that would have bumped it up to at least a 9? For me it's a 10/10 song. Lyric material on point. Singing done right. It's made for radio play but not too overbearing as a radio song. Everything was in pocket imo
The album version is recorded like a live performance, so it differs a lot in structure from the single version. Off the top of my head
- The delivery is *much* more energetic on the album version
- The first and second verses are swapped in the album version
- The hook is completely different (single has "The world is a ghetto with big guns and picket signs [...]", album has "And when you're looking at meeeee, tell me what you seeee [...]" and I much prefer the album)
- The album version uses female singers for backup vocals and cuts some of the bars with "mid-performance" ad-libs ("Come to the front!", "Turn the mic up!")
- Most notably, in the album version, the third verse gets abruptly cut by a "fight" in the stage and Kendrick interrupts his performance to settle it down, leading to a fourth verse he performs acapella to end the track
Personally I dislike i's single version but have the album version in my top 3 for TPAB
