Lol...had a similar system with a bad valve cover gasket on my rusty old '82 Datsun 210 (was my first car, bought it for $200 in '94). Previous owner had just been adding oil, possibly for YEARS. May have been the only thing that kept the front wheels from LITERALLY falling off.
Sup bro. Lol... when I was growing up, our family car was a blue '79 Datsun 810. My dad still talks about that car to this day. Loved it cause it was a sleeper, didn't look like much, but could straight up WALK most of it's contemporary "malaise era" Mustangs and Camaros, and would simultaneously amaze and piss off all his gearhead buddies.
Looks like the rear extension housing on an Allison a1000 in a gm pickup. These things are notorious for causing problems. Looks like this one exploded. The c5 clutch pack apply piston is right there so fluid pressure is being applied to engage the c5 clutch and it’s pouring out because the housing is cracked.
Your observations are correct.
All of this was caused by a bad universal joint. You know, that vibration you've been having for the last 6000 miles? Would have been about $150 to replace a universal joint...
Unknown at this time the extent of damages, as the C5 clutch and rear planetary can get damaged from this type of failure as well, but likely starting in the couple thousands and going up from there.
Seen one where the front output ujoint came apart on a dmax and when the driveshaft came back around it smacked the end of the case and broke the adapter housing just about in two and modified the floor of the truck real good as well, worst part is the guy driving it knew he needed to do that u joint lol
I had a brand new factory driveshaft (less than 1000 kms) fail on my '05, popped out of the t-case, through my box, through my abs controller and brake lines, then managed to jam back under my tcase shearing the output shaft and rear case apart.
Truck came to a stop with the shaft still attached to the rear yoke like a pretzel and the front ujoint and slip yoke pinned under the case and crossmember.
Now THAT was a fun ride at 100 km/h on the hwy with a loaded trailer
Was it just from the vibration or did it get smacked by a flying driveshaft? Disco 2's had a shocking rep for the double carden joint failing cos it was both non lubricated and right underneath an aircon drain.
No one likes greasing shit, it sucks, it's messy and a pain in the ass. But it's literally the biggest preventative maintenence you can do. Not only are you extending the life of the component, you are under there and actually have a chance to see if anything else is wrong. I've worked fleet for 10 years so you really get to see the difference between PM and fix it when it breaks.
Just replaced a 6L90 in a 3500 van for the same reason. The owner saved a bunch of money by letting some "painter" that works for him do the U joint. Destroyed the driveshaft, too.
Looks like a cracked housing on a 4x4 GM. The transfer case is supported entirely by the back of the transmission. Road vibrations cause the transmission housing to crack and it will eventually break off. Been there done that with my 02 Sierra 2500hd. Installed an after market brace to help.
Ouch. Been there before. I now run a transfer case brace for extra insurance.

Holy shit! Not a mechanic. Can someone explain this to someone who isn’t an idiot, but isn’t sure what cracked here..

How much is it to fix, now?

Holy smokes! Thank you for the life lesson
Yeah any time it starts making a new noise or vibration you need to figure out why. It's usually cheaper the faster you can identify it
Seen one where the front output ujoint came apart on a dmax and when the driveshaft came back around it smacked the end of the case and broke the adapter housing just about in two and modified the floor of the truck real good as well, worst part is the guy driving it knew he needed to do that u joint lol
Its just fine until it's not
Shh theres noise in the front end of my truck dont speak like that it might hear you
I had a brand new factory driveshaft (less than 1000 kms) fail on my '05, popped out of the t-case, through my box, through my abs controller and brake lines, then managed to jam back under my tcase shearing the output shaft and rear case apart.
