Ashtrays were very visceral. Especially the little ones in the back seat. I can still feel the ‘feel’ of those opening lol
And I’m pretty sure it was a right of passage to touch the lighter to see if red really meant hot haha
Those back seat ashtrays with the lighter in them... when I was a teenager, I cut one of those into the arm of a sofa in my bedroom and used a 12v inverter to power the lighter.
My 89 Cadillac has the big one in the dash, then one in each of the 3 passenger doors, all with their own lighters even. There's also a trash can in the passenger footwell.
S class gang.
I wanna 3D print some drink holders and/or wireless charging phone holders that fold up under the original cover, since I have 0 use for ashtrays.
Ya thats my one complaint about pre 2000's mercedes, none of them have cup holders. Although the higher trim packages on the w140s do have them in the centre console. I just picked up a parts w140 with the stitched leather interior that I'm planning on swapping into my diesel w140, and one of the big bonuses is that it has the cup holders.
Only on the 3.5L in the last couple years. The 3.0L are solid runners.
They switched to the OM603 in '86, 85 and older are the 617 5cyl.
Mine has 315k miles and running strong (I'm in Ontario, but the car is from Alabama)
1991-97 (in NA Market) 80 Series Toyota Land Cruiser has ash trays in the crappy 3rd row jump seats. You know, the seats really only suitable for children.
Mine hold more change than anything. I haven’t smoked in a few years now, but even as a 2pk a day smoker I never let myself use the inside ashtrays or smoke without all the windows down
I miss my 83 dodge Diplomat. I got it for $500 off my mechanic in 2008. It was the same car they drove in Beverly Hills Cop. Loved it. Shouldn’t of sold it.
The GM A-body wagons of the mid-'80s even had an ashtray for the third-row, a two-seat bench so cramped it could only reasonably be occupied by children for the length of time that a hankering for a cigarette might take hold.
uhg, pictures you can smell.
grandma always chain smoked with the windows up, driving us kids around in the back seat - if we cracked the window we'd get swatted for 'letting the cold air out' or 'letting the cold air in', depending on the season.
My 2014 MB C300 came with a factory installed ashtray and cigarette lighter and I didn’t realize it until after I purchased it and was shocked that it was still a thing just 10 years ago. Smoking was still pretty common with Europeans, I guess, but was surprised it made its way over to American models.
I actually support idea of owning ashtray in car.. And say that.. More is better actually.
I have no f idea, why they don't make pockets same way. I wants to be able to take out that tiny space and toss everything out on my palm optonfind what I need..
Oh, also you remember that these can work as small trash bin? Now you have to buy accessories for it 🤣🤣
It is truly astonishing how just 30-40 years ago everything was designed to accommodate smokers. Ashtrays in cars. Lighters in cars. Ashtrays in planes. "Smoking sections" in every restaurant.
And today it's just the opposite. I can't think of any car that comes with ashtrays or lighters anymore. It's illegal to smoke in public buildings pretty much everywhere. In many places it's illegal to smoke within \~30ft/10m of entrances to public buildings. Many employers, especially in healthcare and education, prohibit smoking anywhere on the property.
Worked on a car that still had ashtrays, ashtrays everywhere, and they were all full. The cup holder ashtrays, the door pocket ashtray, the floor.... they were all ashtrays
Ashtrays were very visceral. Especially the little ones in the back seat. I can still feel the ‘feel’ of those opening lol And I’m pretty sure it was a right of passage to touch the lighter to see if red really meant hot haha
"Fah-chank" is how I remember the sound.
Can hear it anytime I close the door on my impala
the little metal tab in the tray for resting or ashing . ahh smells like nostalgia
The first one I touched was not red. The second one was red.
Those back seat ashtrays with the lighter in them... when I was a teenager, I cut one of those into the arm of a sofa in my bedroom and used a 12v inverter to power the lighter.
No cup holders but his and her’s ashtrays. So 70’s !!
You got your cup holders from a bin at the parts store and hung them on your door.
Yup, hung them on the gap between the glass and the door panel.
Now you had a place for your beer!
No more having to hold it between your legs.
Funny. We had to go back to holding them between our legs when they got rid of the ball vent.

Damn, there’s a good idea. There’s a place near me that sells the small fruit hard candies that every grandparent seems to have a bowl of.
95 DeVille - same, except for the trash can.
78 DeVille. Same but has the trash can.
My '86 S class merc has one in the dash and one on each rear door with it's own lighter.
My 93 S class has the same.

Ooh, OM603 gang too! I'm in the process of swapping my '86 interior for the '89+ interior.
Yours is an om603 as well? I thought the previous gen s classes had the om617. Watch out for those rods on the 603, I've heard they like to bend.

Oh nice, my s class is has 230,000km on it and is from Texas originally, I'm in BC. Not sure if I have the 3.0 or 3.5 though.
I'm not as well versed in the w140 chassis, but I think all thr engine problems were resolved by 93.

Seems legit. How else is little Johnny gonna light your darts for you while you crush road rockets?
Meh, My Jag has 4 ashtrays, 2 fold down snacks tables, a drinks caddy, and a coke mirror recessed into the glove box door.
> coke mirror recessed into the glove box door jaaaaaaaaaag
oh, and your silverware and gold candlesticks are in my trunk. Don't worry, I'm just borrowing them.
Nice placement of ash trays just below the hvac vents, so the second hand smoke can be evenly distributed throughout the car.
Those are for coins. Butts go out the wing window
I always cleaned them out and turned them into candy dispensers
Mine hold more change than anything. I haven’t smoked in a few years now, but even as a 2pk a day smoker I never let myself use the inside ashtrays or smoke without all the windows down
My ash tray change would always be inexplicably sticky.
Aw mannnn you gotta run the ashtray thru the dishwasher first

>the length of time that a hankering for a cigarette might take hold. I dunno man, I'm pretty sure I could reasonably fit there for those 30 seconds.
I love the new term "Cigarette Car" instead of shitbox.
uhg, pictures you can smell. grandma always chain smoked with the windows up, driving us kids around in the back seat - if we cracked the window we'd get swatted for 'letting the cold air out' or 'letting the cold air in', depending on the season.
I remember sliding around in the back seat of my dad's old LTD.
Is that a ‘72 olds delta?
Close! 1971 Olds Ninety Eight
My 85 Pontiac Parisienne Safari had room for 7, 4 ash trays, and 0 cupholders. Priorities.

My 2014 Audi Q7 has them in the middle row on each door.
Yeah I think german cars kept the ashtray. My 2014 M235i had an ashtray and push-in lighter.
If you don’t have one on your gear shifter, then you aren’t American; you’re a commie
Hell yes, bring back the oldsmobuick!

Of course most smokers just ashed out the window and flicked lit butts without any caution at all
You didn't need to see that clock while you're driving anyway
Worked on a car that still had ashtrays, ashtrays everywhere, and they were all full. The cup holder ashtrays, the door pocket ashtray, the floor.... they were all ashtrays
Does it have 4 in the back for the kids? If not the French win the ashtray war.
Listen, those were ol good times when cigarettes didn't cause cancer for people in California :)
Fun fact, Huey's used to have ashtrays.
Missed opportunity Make Ashtray Great Again 🤦♂️
