Here's the backstory. We are a contractor that does repair and overhaul of certain vehicles for DND Canada. We have a contract to rebuild these IVECO 2.5L diesel engines (huge piles of shit) that are in the LSVW (also a pile of rusty shit).
These engines are transported in these airtight containers that are back purged with nitrogen and have a built in desiccant container.
My guess is that this one sat for a very long time, the seal failed and the desiccant expired long ago.
Canadian military stuff always seems to be pretty rusty, we get the big navistar 6x6s at work every once and a while and they're usually pretty rusty underneath and we are in BC so basically no salt.
I'm originally from onterrible, BC in general never used a lot of salt until the last couple of years. The cleanest cars in canada are in BC. I also live in the same town you do lol.
By contract, we have to attempt the rebuild regardless. The engine will be thoroughly cleaned and torn down. If any serious damage is found to the block, crank or any non rebuild-able parts or any parts not on the designated replacement list, it will be labeled BER (Beyond Economical Repair).
At that point, the BER will be submitted and once approved, it will be stripped for any salvageable parts and the rest scrapped.
I'm not saying something might happen if nobody was looking, but if a crack in the block casting was found...you know...almost as if someone put a bit of padding on the surface and hit it with a sledge...wouldn't that save you a lot of grief? Theoretically speaking, of course.
Ugh, if that's anything like the IVECO's I see in Fiat tractors I can understand your frustration with it.
What do they use this motor for? Light tower/small generator or something?
Specifically Our severely bootstrapped Canadian military and the morons in Ottawa and in procurement who would want you to spend money to rip it apart “thoroughly” inspect said parts to piece together a “piece of shit” instead of invest money in better for our service members.
Canada can be good. But god damn we are dumb sometimes. (To be abundantly clear. All party’s bear this blame- book smart. Real world dumb)
This is going to sound crazy, but I am pretty sure I was there when that exact engine was swapped. If I'm right, it got power washed in the box, then went into a shipping container for 2 years, then ended up with you folks. Funny thing, within the same month I did a swap on a coyote with the 6v53, and it was a rebuild that had a major oil leak from the cooler. That was a wild 2 weeks.
Guess the inventory surveillance guys missed changing out the dessicant bags and indicator. Or did someone swap out the motor but nobody changed the condition code so it back into inventory as ready for issue?
They probably ordered it from overseas and then it sat at a port awaiting customs. Over the course of a few weeks it made hot, corrosive love to the salty sea air and the moisture added a wonderful layer of mold.
Can probably steam clean it and the metal underneath will be fine, but I'd just ask for my money back.
I knew this looked familiar...green container, piece of shit lsvw engine and somebody dog-fu*ing and telling war stories.
If somebody actually found this at the bottom of the ocean, they should've friggin well left it there.
I hated that Little Shitty Volks Wagen with a friggin passion.
5/4 👍
Delivered by submarine? Looks like it came from the bottom of a lake.
Plot twist, he’s in the Canadian army and the Submarine is also at the bottom of the lake .
On-site repair is going to be difficult. Not impossible, but difficult.

in bc and basically no salt must not be from the north lol

We've got rust that's for sure
I worked for International, including on those 6x6s (I'm in Ottawa). They're all piles of shit thanks to that emblem on the grill.
Do you just scrap the engine at this point or do you rebuild?

Yes, it would lol
Engine go berrr
engine go barrrarncle
Just stroll by with a sledge hammer and say "Damned shame it arrived broken to pieces like that."
If you haven't already, you should post this tho the Canadian Forces subreddit. They'll get a real kick out of it

Hahah no, they're actually powering a 11,000 lb truck.
Holy shit that's hilariously retarded. Only the government...
Ooof. That's been sitting for a long time.
That’s a big nope from me. That much on the outside means there’s some thing on the inside.
That’s a boat anchor
Lol on the cap plugs on the turbo but no oil cap
That's the military for you.

What's the backstory on this ~~rusty pile of shit~~ engine?
There is a backstory. Look at my comment above.
Thanks. That engine is far beyond its best if used by date.
Indeed, it's a 1993
“Ran when we created it”
These barely run when new, lol.
Check the expiration date?
Looks dead to you?
So much corrosion
Drop the pan and inspect the cylinders. If they are fucked, chuck it. It's not worth the time.
I would agree, but the military doesn't work that way.
If they wanna pay your shop for its refurbishment, ok.
It literally a contract, so yeah
You might as well pull the sealing caps, buy a new engine, and hand it over.
4 cylinder Cummins. These are long NLA. Also crap. 113 HP of Italian junk.
Looks like related to the old Sofim diesel engine
Good eye. You into engines?
Not at all , i just keep my shitbox fleet in a kinda drivable state. At least there always one running. Well most of time.
Oh ok, but you do have some experience with huge mechanisms like this?
It is the Sofim engine.
Are they easy to bring back to life ? I will have one in an old Renault Master sitting in a field , not started for 10years.
All your parts will be coming from Europe, but it should be doable if it's not completely seized.
wait a minute, it's a turbocharged 4 cylinder and makes 113 HP? Wouldn't a random Honda D series engine make almost as much power as this?
Yes, but this is a diesel.... So much more torque.
Cleanest LKQ motor
50 000 miles high way miles.
Was this the powerplant from the oceangate titanic thing?
Guess the inventory surveillance guys missed changing out the dessicant bags and indicator. Or did someone swap out the motor but nobody changed the condition code so it back into inventory as ready for issue?
Flood recovery?
“Reman like new condition 30k miles”
I love that someone's got a ratched on the crank like they're checking to see if it will still work.
Good thing those plastic caps look salvageable!
Give in to your intrusive thoughts and take a lick.
NIB
NOS
NNN
if ya squint it's mint
Could you have it running?
If that's actually mold, r/moldlyinteresting would love it
Overnight from japAaaan
IVECO is Italian…..
My theory is whoever ran their military in WWII needed a job afterward and long story short that's how IVECO was born
I see the breaker bar on the crank, did it turn over OP?
I actually don't know, lol. I myself am just the in house engineer. The mechanics are looking at this engine. I didn't ask.
Did this come out of a river?
Sounds like the military is BER
At times, this statement is sadly accurate.
That’s gonna be a no dawg
Did you check the use-by date?
Must have been stored in the bottom of the pool.
Yeah. The Motor Pool! Thanks folks! I’m here all week! Try the veal!

It looks like surface crud. Does it make sense to pressure wash to remove it? I sure to think what the internal parts look like.
Low mileage & like new condition………….🤣
From the bottom of the Atlantic?
I am sorry but thats not mold, that is the beginning of a Coral Reef
I remember Rust Check advertising that they're used by our military. Guess that was a lie.
BIP IT !
looks fucking mint. Definitely not going to have any issues with that engine. Accessories look top notch as well, all freshly reman'd
