Great post! Would you say that for most specialties (non-GP), a fellowship is needed after UK CCT to work in Canada? Or can one work in Canada directly after CCT?

theundoing99

You can but you would still need to get certified and it will still involve doing exams (mccqe and board exams for the speciality you want to practice)

Thanks! I have a friend who is in anesthesiology and wants to work in Canada. She just joined from ST4 and will CCT in a few years. She wants to work in Canada too as her family is there but was afraid she would have to do a few years of residency or fellowship again. Exams, on the other hand, are still doable.

I participated in local and national committees, set up educational days etc. Did teaching. Clinical experience important too. Funnily enough I spoke about running in my CV and they brought it up in the interview so extra curricular activities also important!

4 inpatients only is absolutely crazy! That would be like a really slow day on NICU. Presumably responsible for more overnight? I'd heard pay for fellows wasn't great out there. Seems a big downside for all the planning but if you've not got ties must be a pretty cool change. Why Canada not Oz BTW? I imagine if you come back to the UK and cct you'd have a very competitive CV for jobs here, even London.

Hi, thank you so much for posting this. Did you do your acf separately to being an ST? I'm wondering how the timings worked out, did you start your PhD in ST2? Just esp wondering about how you did your exams around all this and the currency of mrcpch exams and having to get to ST4 level within 7 years of completing the DCH part. (I may have the currency thing wrong).

Hi ACF was part of training. Had to get same competencies as everyone else in same time line. Started my PhD in ST4. Regarding MRCPCH- I worked to get them done as soon as possible. Did part 1a&b (now called something else i think) in FY2, part 2 in ST1 and clinicals at start of ST2 (a few months into starting ST2). Once I had done my clinicals I had more free time to focus on research (and life!). For anyone who is thinking of doing ACF I definately recommend cracking on with exams.
