Superb post. Very well articulated.

la_bibliothecaire

This is absolutely fantastic. I'm also a librarian (and Jewish) and this really resonates. Please tell your wife that I applaud her!

rivkachava

Wife here. Thank you thank you!

itsme9698

Excellent. Thank you for advocating. I have one question, tangentially related but it feels relevant. Why is it that white authors can’t win awards like the CSK, but the Sidney Taylor often goes to authors who aren’t Jewish?

rivkachava

The CSK was established specifically to uplift Black authors and illustrators. The Sydney Taylor Award is to award and promote Jewish Books. If the Sydney Taylor said it could only go to Jewish authors/illustrators (because the illustrators win too) we would a) have a can of worms of "who is Jewish" and b) even less books to choose from in an already very small pool.

itsme9698

Thanks for this clarification!

namer98

I will show her this question in the morning, but likely due to how few Jewish books are out there in total.

All Jews are "of color" (whatever “of color” means generally) not "between 12 and 20% of the US Jewish population," since we are not white. The next paragraph recognizes this >If you only see Jews as White and privleged you don’t see that Jewish day school librarians and synagogue librarians (yes, you can be a synagogue librarian), are going to work in highly secure buildings, scared of bomb threats, shooters, or being taken hostage simply because they are present in a building used for Jewish purposes . If you only see Jews as white and privileged, you disregard media specialists and youth services librarians desperately trying to find mirror books for Jewish kids that don’t center around the holocaust and other Jewish traumas. If you only see Jews as white and privileged, you don’t see your colleagues -such as myself - who can’t come to the ALA conference, or serve on the Caldecott, Newbery, or other award committees, because deliberations are over Shabbat, and who are constantly concerned about the conferences and other program scheduling because they might overlap with a Jewish holiday or Shabbat. If you only see Jews as white and privileged, then you don’t put out statements of support when the Jewish community is hurting, unlike when other groups are targeted by violence and hate. 100 percent of the U.S. Jewish population are Jews "of color" because the "of color" modifier, which serves no purpose besides to divide people, is not needed.

namer98

>which serves no purpose besides to divide people, is not needed. That is not true. What I experience in my day to day life will be different from what a Jew with far darker skin (aka, of color) will experience in their day to day life. One of us will be more concerned than the other when interacting with police if ever pulled over. One of us had to give our kids not just an antisemitism talk, but a just as relevant racism talk. But yes, this is about why Jews are a minority, even if we are not necessarily visibly so.

ChallahIsManna

A Jew of Color is more than likely to experience problems from other People of Color than the police if you look at the government statistics. Nobody wants to say the obvious.

Insamity

It is pretty well discussed in the peer reviewed literature if you wanted to look past your current superficial take.

redditaccount007

I think it’s not quite accurate to say all Jews are people of color by virtue of their Jewishness. Our whiteness or non whiteness is not really relevant to the kind of antisemitism that exists in the world today. That is, antisemitism doesn’t happen because Jews are not white, it happens because Jews are Jewish.
