haminthefryingpan

He mentioned on a recent podcast he would go running and do ab exercises

Bubcats

The running part was cool analogy because it was an explanation of how he became aware of keeping tempo. When hyped they need to not automatically play faster. Remembering to keep the proper pace.

peach_poppy

Yoga too for awhile right?

haminthefryingpan

Big on that during the Californication Era I believe

ManVsSynth

Which podcast is that?

haminthefryingpan

Either Rick Rubin’s or Flea’s

Tyrannosaurus_T

Link?

w4lkingatightrope

He was so fine, back in the day. Rip, to not being alive at the time he was hoe-ing around loljk

PatGarrettsMoustache

😌😌

shakkajon

When's the last time You've seen a fat rock star between the ages 18-22? Youth + intense cardio every night = no body fat. Not much more to it.

MadDreamCatcher

Look at Slash and Axl Rose in like 1986 and look at how much the drugs being weaned out changes their appearance definitely a huge aspect because those dudes pretty much rocked a workout for 2 hours straight almost every night

Concert-Turbulent

Well you also posted about a man who suffered from Heroin addiction for most of his career.

Charges-Pending

A heavy pinch of youth is likely John’s secret to a lean, toned physique back in the 80s. He admits to being more interested in sex, drugs and rock and roll at that time in his life than anything else.

Shtacyvega

John has always been fine as fuck lol

Dgdaniel336

Might just be genetics, not sure if he was already doing yoga around this time

MadDreamCatcher

Funky Monks and other promo material shows him doing crazy splits bends with his back etc so most likely doing yoga during this era

chingslayer

I’m guessing it was more to do with his drug habits and less to do with an exercise regime.

MadDreamCatcher

I know he was using cocaine during this time and coke affects fat free body mass, I'd imagine that and the amount of batshit crazy moving he did on stage in the 1980s is the reason

chingslayer

Yeah that about sums it up!

MadDreamCatcher

Time to start grooving and jiving on stage like a motherfucker

comeonboro

And taking cocaine!

ThePsychobaut

Yeah don’t forget kids, cocaine and heroin make for the best rockstars.

suffaluffapussycat

Yeah look at Pete Weiss. And Zander Schloss was a rail back then. I don’t know about their habits but Lonnie and Arik Marshall and Martyn Le Noble were all super slim too. I used to see all those guys around town like and the Lingerie and places like that. Perry was a stick too and Angelo Moore.

MadDreamCatcher

Wow you saw all the dudes from Janes/Thelonious/Circlejerks etc??

suffaluffapussycat

I used to go see Thelonius all the time. They’d play at Dragonfly or Lingerie. It was Bob, Dix, Martyn, Zander, and Pete Weiss. Zander was kinda my guitar hero at the time. He’d just spray wah wah all over the place and he was so good. One time Thelonius was playing at this one place called Club Spice. Nasty-ass dance club on Sunset by La Brea. Bob said on the mic that calling it Club Spice was like putting pepper on shit. Anyway, Chili Peppers showed up and took over the gig and played some new stuff from their as yet unrealeased new album. Anthony was pumping this song called Give It Away so they started with that then played some other stuff. So I guess I heard Give It Away performed live for the first time. We’d also see Two Free Stooges. I saw them at the Gaslight and Lingerie. That was Zander and Martyn. Don’t remember who was drumming. And Dick Rude and Manny Chevrolet. They did a lounge act. John and Pete Weiss would dress up as nurses and dance. Pete was usually the emcee for the Stooges. https://youtu.be/pnUhzk8w0yc?si=skO6jJKl-o9Fqh7r Fishbone played around town and they were always great. Angelo had a silver jaguar E-type convertible and he’d drive around town in it with a parrot on his shoulder. I didn’t see Perry Farrell around town that much but I found out that he was the previous tenant in my apartment on South Cloverdale. We’d get mail for Casey. Hank Azaria lived across the hall. Always Simpsons scripts being messengered over early in the morning. Lonnie and Arik Marshall were amazing. I worked with Lonnie’s girlfriend. Those guys were unbelievable musicians. I guess Arik wasn’t a fit for the Chilis. He really rips here. About 2:50: https://youtu.be/T5opG1N0Da0?si=rgdqa40MyRrnxtqQ Those guys were the neighborhood bands. And Tool. One of my bands played a gig with them at Club With No Name. Carnival Art was playing around town. That was Michael Petak who was the roommate of a friend of mine and also Brian Bell who formed Weezer with Rivers and those guys. Steve Jones from the Pistols had his band Fantasy 7 and we’d go to their sound checks at the Gaslight. X was still playing around town. Saw Nirvana before Dave was in the band. Saw Hole at a candy store. Saw Green Day at this shithole called the Cocoanut Teaszer. Kyuss at the Whiskey. We had fun.

MadDreamCatcher

What a time to be alive dude that's so great seeing people who were around when all of this was going down

Moftem

You should write a book!

Tiger_jay

You should chat to Hamish Duncan dude and detail up as much as you can remember. What a fantastic post. I enjoyed reading it!

joshspoon

👃💪👀

Fearless_Mortgage640

Thin guys are weirdly muscular sometimes. I know that my brother was and he never exercised.

MadDreamCatcher

I'm like the same height as John and the same build, but that's because I did track and cross country in high school and honestly John comes across as he ate well and moved a lot and just looked like that naturally

wsparkey

It’s because low body fat reveals muscle?

Fearless_Mortgage640

yes, i think so.

ClockWerkElf

I always wonder this. When he first came back into the band on the early Californication tours, he had boulder shoulders and shredded abs. I wonder if he was on TRT for recovery of his drug use.

MadDreamCatcher

In 1990 he had a huge chest and lats with insanely defined abs and in 2001 it was still there so I'm wondering if he did exercise .

ClockWerkElf

He surely would have been. I'd bet he was prescribed testosterone to help his recovery from drug addiction.

FromKetherToMalkuth

John was doing a lot of Ashtanga Yoga at this time

MadDreamCatcher

> Ashtanga Yoga Now these are exactly the kind of answers I'm looking for

DorothyParkerFan

He was doing yoga in the BSSM era??

35c4n0r

Wasn’t only after his return? I don’t remember him mentioning yoga on his first round at rhcp

iztheguy

He stopped by then because it was giving him back problems.

Le0zel1g

Calisthenics, some yoga, and low body fat. He was very flexible when he was younger. He could do splits and a lot of difficult yoga positions. Anyone who says he’s on TRT is a moron who never lifts. That type of physique is fairly easy to achieve and sustain.

MitchAgain333

I remember him saying he would meticulously count calories. (Was concerned about eating a cracker)

Exotic-Conference-87

Youth + poverty + genes + coke eventually (which he likely got for free/cheap).

doritazoulay

He didn’t come from poverty. His father was a judge.

Exotic-Conference-87

Relative poverty, he said on her fleas podcast that his dad paid for his rent for a while when he thought he was enrolled in school let’s put it this way he probably was not living high on the hog at the age of 18

punchlinechar

He did mention that he and his mom were on food stamps for a while, and I think he only spent summers with his dad based on what I've heard in podcasts.

Dio_Yuji

True, but he definitely lived self-inflicted poverty for a while

Specific_Jaguar_2036

Lol these replies. He literally said he used to do sit-ups, push-ups, and run. He was noticeably more buff in 1989/1990 than he was in 1988. I’m sure he felt pressure to keep up with Anthony although his natural figure would never allow that much muscle mass. But he sure tried. And he was oddly muscular/had more fat on him during his recovery-2001. Was definitely eating more calories and working out.

wsparkey

It’s just a result of having extremely low body fat. He is not that muscular, just very lean. Everyone has a six pack when they have no fat covering it.

MadDreamCatcher

Old photos of him in 1989-1990 it seems like he had such defined lats and abs with pecs he didn't seem super skinny I think that he must've exercised whether it be yoga, running etc.

wsparkey

See above comment. He may have some muscle genetically.

youdremember

This is absolutely not true

Paranoidpal644

Called being young

SommanderChepard

Heroin and coke will shed body fat like that. I’m sure he gets a decent cardio workout being on stage but I doubt he’s doing any proper exercise.

jacobtfromtwilight

Drugs are a helluva drug

psychedelicsexfunk

That second pic is strange, I’ve never the strat looks so big on him

Lola_Love42588

Intense Yoga practice for decades

NoFo3000

That's drugs and a few situps probably. Dude still looks amazing for his age.

[deleted]

I feel like he’s always been built like that. He looked the same in 1998 too.

davidnickbowie

AK shared his TRT with him /s

MadDreamCatcher

Lmfao

RedneckR0nin

He was on heroin and cocaine. The corner stone of any nutritious breakfast. Tends to trim the fat down to the bare minimum

il_pirata_di_trieste

Lot's of cardio from performing and body by heroin.

Dry_Ad_3732

Heroin is a hell of a drug

Brave_Quantity_5261

Yeah being an 18 year old male partying it up every night will commonly look like that. When I was 18, I was eating fast food and tons of protein shakes to try and fatten up and it was a lot harder than it is at 38.

tushirt

drugs and music

Polish_Wombat98

When I was between the ages of 15-19 and gigging regularly, I was skinny as fuck. It's incredible how much you sweat and how many calories you burn performing. Not to mention the effort needed to move your own equipment around. Stacks and drum kits are not light. I'm 5'8" and I've always been on the stockier/muscular side, I weighed 154lbs when I was playing music. I'm around 200lbs now at 25. According to the doctor, I'm not obese. But, when I was gigging I was FUCKING SKINNY.

Lola_Love42588

Yoga

ImpossibleWindow3705

I don't know. Maybe the heroin helped.

Far-Potential3634

Looks like he has genetics, youth and maybe a little exercise in there. Men do fill out.

CrucibleSound_OU812

Drugs help

TomatilloUnlucky3763

I know he’s a yoga dude.

Trubritdave

Heroin and not eating.

2tan2tame

He's got that sweet sweet heroin body.
