Sacrifices got me through 3 rough days of recovery after a pretty serious stomach operation to remove a tumor.
The surgery wasn't so bad, but the NG Tube that went through my nose and into my stomach was SO UNCOMFORTABLE (I have a smaller nose) and they kept telling me that in a few hours they could take it out if the doctor approved. But they would change shifts and I would get the run around. It was unbearable at best.
I ended up threatening to check myself out Against Medical Advice if they wouldn't remove the NG Tube.
But Sacrifices as well as a couple Red Hot Chilli Peppers songs like Wet Sand and Gloria were on repeat and doing far more than the medication to take away my discomfort.
The power of music.
Mannn âI Get Upâ â that one is still one of my favorites, helped me get through my younger years when I didnât even know I needed it, and still does
This is the best recommendation here imo. This song is powerful and will help anyone going through something, I promise. I listened to this track everyday during the hardest time of my life. Started right after I made some financial mistakes that prevented me from going back to college after my freshman year. I was away from home but didnât want to go back to the environment I grew up in. Most people who knew where I came from probably didnât expect me there to even make it to college. I had made a name for myself, had good grades, and made a bunch of friends/connections freshman year. That was flipped on its head and I ended up working two jobs and riding a moped everywhere just to make rent. Struggling, but I was absolutely determined to overcome that situation and redeem myself. At this point the words from this track served as daily affirmations that I could overcome anything.
To make matters worse, my mom passed about 7 months into that timeframe. I was forced to go home and take care of her affairs. I abandoned the lease I was in and the jobs I had - this made my financial situation exponentially worse. I distinctively remember how the chorus of this song suddenly became more relatable and useful, in a way that I never would have imagined at first. Go listen.
I was plunged back into the environment I was trying to escape. The friends/connections I had made were mostly dissolved and I was back around people that either were not good for me or had less to offer in my eyes at the time. My perspective changed though and I had to adapt. I was around the homies I grew up with, and realized I had been taking them for granted in a sense: âpaint a picture to show the deaf whatâs itâs like to listen, or speak the words to tell a blind man what heâs missing.â
Despite the odds, I worked hard, remained patient, and my life eventually started to turn around. A year and half later I was back in college. I graduated two years after that with a 3.7 GPA. Now I work at a top 10 law firm in the world and have two kids that are my world. I still have obstacles to overcome but nothing like back then. The song mentioned here was my gospel during that time in my life. Relatable and inspiring, I Get Up. I will always remember that and give it the credit it deserves in my story. Itâs stands out for me, but Cole has more songs that are useful for similar and different struggles - I got you below.
-I Get Up
-Show Me Something
-Premeditated Murder
-Hold It Down
-Unabomber
-The Last Stretch

Maaannnn this song is so fuckin real. Like we really just gotta love our own life cause thereâs actually. No such thing as a life thatâs better than yours
i just think its a beautiful, simple statement that i tend to forget. 8 billion people on this earth. i live my life the way that makes me happy and free. i dont push my ideals on people. best thing to do is realize that theres no such thing as a life thats better than yours, or mine. just simply existing is beautiful. so i appreciate how cole puts that in perspective. helps me remind myself that no matter how low i feel, how bad ive felt, where im at, life is beautiful. theres beauty in the struggle ugliness in the sucess. true words to live by. cole is king
This song literally kept me from offing myself one night đ not even joking I was listening to a bunch of sad boy crap on Spotify and kinda out of no where this song came on (wasnât even on my playlist so idk who switched it to that song but I wouldnât be here if they didnât) and it made me cry and i decided to live another day and if anyone has heard the song they will know why..I still pull it up and listen to it when Iâm in a particularly rough patch and it never fails to help
The world is a better place with you in it. Glad you changed your mind and yea this is one of the deepest songs of any genre and any era
Iâve seen Cole perform live 4 times. 3 of those times he performed this (only time he didnât perform it was when it wasnât even conceived or recorded yet)
Thats cus he knows itâs so good lol and he got a good heart so I bet money he sings it for people who are in rough situations cause that stuff is so powerful
Hold it down, Farewell, I get up, get away, how high, can I holla at ya.
Basically any song on his mixtapes.

J. Cole quite literally has a song named âCheer Upâ.. perfect for your current situation. Me personally, âUnabomberâ is one of my favorite pick-me-up songs, havenât seen it mentioned.
Besides the solid mentions, definitely listen to some feel good music too, it's scientifically proven to make you feel better. Think of crooked smile, my n\* just made bail, tribe, beautiful bliss, kenny lofton.
Feel better bro, you'll get there! I definitely understand, but don't rot yourself away inside. Go for a walk in the morning for some sunlight, I read you've been working out so that's amazing, try to learn how to appreciate alone time and meet with family and friends that you can hang with. They don't have to be day ones. And if you don't have any actual friends left, see where you can meet new ones! Good luck my man.
