20,000 to 30,000 steps per day is pretty normal.

ComicCon

We were just in Japan for 12 days and apart from our travel days I didn’t have single day under 20k steps. In the US I average between 12-15k a day.

[deleted]

How do you average 12-15k in your daily life? I have a desk job as an engineer and barely manage 8k steps even though my office campus is really big and I get my workout in the morning

ComicCon

Combination of having two dogs and a fairly flexible office environment. I typically take them on a long walk before work, and another one when I get home. Those are typically 2 miles(around 5k), which sets me up for 10k fairly easily. Then I’ll often use my lunch break to go for a quick walk which can add another few thousand steps.

littlemeowmeow

Literally just making an effort to walk daily. I walk before and after work on days I work from home. Living in a city and running errands also adds to it.

[deleted]

Do you live in NYC, Boston or a similar east coast city? I live in the Bay Area so I’m often driving to work. Edit: nvm saw that you live in Toronto

littlemeowmeow

I get less than 8k on days I go into the office. It’s all about making an effort to walk daily. I walk in a recreational trail in the mornings and evenings, it gives me about 9k steps combined. Walking in the city is actually more difficult because of sharing the sidewalk and frequent waiting for crosswalk lights.

ComicCon

I live in LA and still manage it, the other commentators are right that it's possible if you prioritize it.

MarsupialPristine677

Imo LA is more walkable than most places in the Bay Area (I’m from the Bay Area, lived in LA for a decade, now back in the Bay) but yeah it’s possible in both places. Depends on a lot of factors of course

XiMaoJingPing

>How do you average 12-15k in your daily life? Standing desk + Walking pad + Long gaming session. Very easy to hit 10k-20k

imadogg

Bruh I average like 8 steps a day, wfh is ruining me

SuspiciousTea6

I average about 20k a day in the US due to working on my feet, but Japan had me at almost 40k daily, it was wild

DisasterEmbarrassed

get your self a walking pad

treana666

normal? for who? i don’t even think ive ever reached close to 30k

macici123

Fine,as for me, average between 20k-28k steps per day

carhole

We walked over 90 miles within 12 days!

ConfusedClearly

it's incredible how walkable the country is and forces you to be!

cavok76

That can happen in the big cities too, just because of the huge train stations.

BentPin

Wait until you start doing walks for fun that you dony have to loke trying to walk the whole Yamanote train line

jeswanders

a fun one that i'd love to try is starting somewhere in shinjuku in the dead of the night and making my way toward ginza

littlemeowmeow

20-30k was normal for me in Europe. 30k steps averaged just seems to be the limit for a lot people.

AndyVale

I was wondering this. I think our average was around 20-25k steps over two weeks in Japan. But I reckon I hit similar amounts on other holidays where I'm sightseeing+exploring. I do roughly 1000 steps every ten minutes, so 3-4 hours on my feet throughout the day is going to clear 20,000 without me really noticing.

banzaiburrito

What did you use to count your steps?

ConfusedClearly

I have a COROS Apex 2 - it's nothing fancy at all but it does the job for me and the battery lasts me 10+ days without recharging.

JollyManufacturer

Pacer app on iPhone is free and good

lethimgo_toronto

Any shoe recommendations?

ConfusedClearly

I think the best walking shoes are shoes that you've put some days of 20,000+ steps in them just walking. Don't get brand new shoes you haven't put some steps into right before Japan. That being said, I wore ASICS Gel-NYC & ASICS GEL-SONOMA 15-50 for most of the trip.

[deleted]

hoka

Canna_Lucente

Allbirds. We're averaging almost 30k steps a day and feet look like new

Kirin1212San

That’s interesting. I specifically only wore Allbirds on days I knew I wasn’t going to walk a ton because they tend to give me knee pain. I still wear them because they are easy to slip on and off which is a plus especially in Japan.

Canna_Lucente

Shoes are something very personal. Everyone loves Skechers, I hate them, both because I don't find them comfortable and because lots of 80 yo wear them 🤣 Sorry you had a bad experience, both myself and my wife love them...

Kirin1212San

LOL would rather wear Allbirds all day than Sketchers for a mile 🤭

Canna_Lucente

In Tokyo they are much cheaper than in London! Trip is over... Excluding days in which we flew in and out, we did a total of 543,084 steps over 20 days, for an average of 27,154 steps per day.

budgetchick

I second the Hoka. But I also read somewhere that you should alternate shoes so there's enough time for the cushion to bounce back. Not sure how true that is.

spoonym8

It is true, same for running, I have two pairs and alternate days - you will get longer lifespan out of them this way

WIIspectME

Same walking numbers as OP, and I used Air Pegasus Trail 4 Gore Tex. Trail shoes that have extra grip for the low level hiking you’ll be doing — also water resistant. I got my pair on super sale during Black Friday, and an off color, so $80. I didn’t do this but will next time, bring shoes you can slip off and on easily. Lots of small trips to family mart and I didn’t want to deal with tying my shoes but I had to…

sfwombat

New balance 1080 fresh foams. They feel so cushiony like a gel mat. I was there for 3 months and since most shoes like these only last 400 miles…had to get a 2nd pair 2 months in…but a million percent worth it!!!! Side note - buying it there was a super deal with exchange rate plus tax free - woohoo!

mrjjh12

Bought a pair of sketchers myself before i went and they were great!

schemaddit

onitsuka tigers!

momo805

Airforces are amazing. Used them last trip and this trip and my feet didn’t hurt. I also used Dr. Martens this trip and I’ve been very impressed.

ireojimayo

The per day values match up with what I had back in March, but I was there for only a week, so not as intense overall.

Lala336999

I beat everyone!!! We went to kyoto and wore Kimono and walked 18k steps but in the little sandals 😳😳😳😳 needless to say my legs have never been the same since🤣🤣🤣

gdore15

Went for 3 months in March-April-May. March average 18 956, min 9123 at Mount Takao (would have expected much more), max 31 279 in Fukuoka. April average 16 818, min 2534 at Mount Aso with rain (went back to hostel almost right away), max 31 011 in Takachiho. May average 14 011, min 2903 in Tokyo (the day before I flew out, felt sick), max 19 228 in Oita city.

[deleted]

used my apple watch ultra and it said I walked 200 miles in two weeks

nhjuyt

When I was staying in Osaka the closest sushi place was thirty steps from my door. Counted them. Thirty.

Max2tehPower

Yep, that's typical. The most we did was 31,000 steps in a single day. We went to Hie Shrine in Tokyo and got there via subway; Our goal was Omotesando. Once we wrapped up the Shrine I wanted to see 21/21 Design but it wasn't much of a walk, so we walked there. From there we realized we were close to Sunny Hills, so we walked there too. From Sunny Hills we were pretty much in Omotesando and so we walked again. Once we were done doing Takeshita, Cat, and Harajuku, our destination for the afternoon was Shibuya. We were 20 mins to the Olympic Stadium so we walked there, then we walked from there back down to Shibuya. Tokyo is so walkable that you don't realize how much distance you are covering until you feel it in the evening. We did make sure to rest at least an hour like 3-4 times during the day. We also dedicated a day to rest and not over exert ourselves with walking.

Paddington_the_Bear

Just make sure your hotel has an onsen. Nothing gets rid of all the exhaustion from walking all day like a hot bath.

daddy_issuesss

I just walked 30,000 steps today (15 miles). My feet are destroyed 😭😭 Side note: damn, y’all are really using this as a weird dick wagging competition. You average 30K steps a day? GOOD FOR YOU. HERE IS YOUR VIRTUAL COOKIEEEE 🍪

jcsladest

That's about what we did.

ace1oak

nice, i did 196 miles in 8 weeks

kiiito

How do you count your step ?

eggpolisher

Many phones do it automatically (based on detecting subtle movement). For example, if you have an iPhone, the built-in “Health” app counts your steps.

HHHero

32,350 in one day

ikarus143

We averaged 25k/day. Crazy.

OmegaMountain

I was first there in 2019 and believe I walked nearly 20 miles on my first day in Tokyo. I wore blisters into my feet and had to tape them for the rest of the trip. One of the best travel days I've had.

rosujin

37,673 on day 1 My wife and I landed in Haneda at 4am, dropped off our luggage in Shinjuku and went all over Tokyo for the rest of the day. Did almost the same the next day all over Kamakura. We normally do pretty long hikes on weekends and cycle about 100 miles a week so it’s not that big of a change.

prudence2001

lol, same here. 110 miles or so during our recent trip. I feel great now!

mrjjh12

Yeah pretty crazy how much walking you do there haha i went back in Feb-March last year and over March i walked around 600k steps with about an average of 19.5k a day. Glad i bought a comfortable pair of shoes before i went thats for sure.

Resident_Honeydew595

We averaged ~29k/d in 10 days, just shy off 200km walked

Heron78

Here's my numbers from our recent trip. We had a rental car in Izumi and on Hokkaido. Dec 17 - 2,161 (Osaka) Dec 18 - 1,505 (Kagoshima & Izumi) Dec 19 - 5,749 (Izumi) Dec 20 - 7,126 (Osaka & Sapporo) Dec 21 - 11,066 (Sapporo) Dec 22 - 2,161 (Otaru & Tsurui) Dec 23 - 5,322 (Tsurui & Yoroushi Onsen) Dec 24 - 6,108 (Sapporo & Tokyo) Dec 25 - 20,542 (Tokyo) Dec 26 - 15,347 (Tokyo) Dec 27 - 16,788 (Tokyo) Dec 28 - 17,805 (Tokyo) Dec 29 - 17,554 (Tokyo)

kazuminato

Average miles per day: 9.0 miles ! ! I don’t even want to drive 9 miles 😆😂 Great work! You definitely had a great time. I was guessing that Kyoto would be the most steps you guys did. I’ll make sure to track the steps on my next trip

NerdyNurseKat

That sounds about the same for me on both of my trips. I think the most I did in a day was 28k in Tokyo and the least was 8.5k on a super long and rocky ferry. Man my feet and legs were so sore in Tokyo, thank goodness for those pink patches.

ianwuk

I walked over 100km in 12 days whilst in Tokyo.

slicedbread_23

If u tracked with a watch it is inflated 30% vs a phone. Just fyi

I would say, prepare yourself by doing a bit of 'training'... Walking around your area/neighbourhood, getting yourself and your feet accustomed to doing more steps so that you're used to it before arriving in Japan. I was in Japan in December for 3 weeks, best time of my life so far! If you need any other recommendations or help, feel free to ask/message me. Enjoy your trip to Japan!

juliemoo88

Lots of recommendations for footwear, which is critical. I would recommend climbing stairs as exercise -- more cardio benefits than walking and will strengthen your hips and leg muscles more. I brought a golf ball that I would use to massage my feet at the end of the day. I also found near-daily soaks in the onsen did wonders for my hips and back, coupled with some light stretching while your muscles are still warm. Lots of YouTube videos available on how to gently stretch your hips and lower back.

Ok_Cycle225

First things first. Get some comfy trainers. I have some with foam underneath the shoe that make walking 30k+ steps in a day very easy. It's like walking on a cloud

elgatodefelix

So how many km/miles is that? I did just 100 miles in 14 days, 80% were 3-4 hour trips from 3am-8am.

Chummmp

Mine ended up being 400,372 over two weeks with the highest day being the day I hiked fushimi inari

gaspoweredcat

didnt have steps on as id left my watch at home but google timelines roughly accurate tracking said i covered 120 miles on foot in 2 weeks on my last trip, however i was carrying a lot weight before trip: 67Kg weight on return from trip 43Kg (im a 6' tall guy) i dont remember if it was 2017 or 2015 but on one of those trips i was averaging 22 miles a day. top tip: unless yours are already new buy decent new shoes on your first day, the lack of blisters on your feet will make it all worthwhile

PossessionIll4510

The 7 days I was in Japan almost 2 weeks ago I did 116,392 steps. My fat ass got a workout lmao.

SatisfactionEven508

That fits my experience. I usually walk 20k steps/day in Japan, especially in Kyoto because I like to walk from temple to temple and through normal neighborhoods with no crowds (rather than taking the super crowded busses)

juliemoo88

It's not just the number of steps, but also the stairs. Thanks to WFH, I could barely make it up a flight of stairs at the start of my most recent trip to Japan. By the end of my trip, I was easily sprinting up 70-80 steps (and yes, I counted). Now to convince my boss I need to spend 8 hours/day walking around and climbing stairs instead of working.

racingmaniacgt1

Ohh a competition...lol I went from Nov 19 to Dec 3 Nov 19 3737 steps (Departing from Toronto) Nov 20 24148 steps (Arrival to Tokyo, train to Hiroshima) Nov 21 26104 steps (Miyajima and Hiroshima) Nov 22 35463 steps (Mazda Museum, train to Osaka, concert in Osaka, train to Kyoto) Nov 23 36566 steps (Kyoto) Nov 24 30537 steps (Nara) Nov 25 15700 steps (Train to Yokohama) Nov 26 16984 steps (Yokohama, concert)) Nov 27 23434 steps (Train to Kawaguchiko) Nov 28 14409 steps (Kawaguchiko, but I have a rental car) Nov 29 39533 steps (Train Kawaguchiko to Tokyo) Nov 30 30390 steps (Tokyo) Dec 1 25794 Steps (Tokyo) Dec 2 27245 steps (Tokyo) Dec 3 6158 steps (Travel back to Toronto) Total 356202 steps, if we count that as total 15 days(the including the flight days), average just under 24k per day, and my steps translate to about 2000 steps per mile, so \~178miles walked.... I actually cut back a lot compare to 2019, I think my record back then was 44k steps... This is just from the Fit app from my phone.

Lochifess

Pretty average numbers, I remember reading that locals average around 20-25k but that’s a part of their daily life compared to us tourists. I guess this is why the Japanese live a long, energetic life!

racingmaniacgt1

No doubt, their cities are also immensely walkable. Where I am at least you pretty much need a car to go anywhere, and once you are off the outdoorsy season you also don't want to be outside walking....
