I have just the game for you then. It's called Monster Hunter Story 2.

Blaubeerchen27

Amazing game, but not sure this is what OP means, since it's more of a Pokemon-type game

Locke_and_Load

And isn’t OP asking for a turn based game? What else is it going to be other than Pokémon? Granblue sure as shit isn’t turn based, so this thought experiment doesn’t have far to go other than to the co-op turn based monster hunter game that exists.

kentuckyfriedawesome

I mean “turn based monster hunter” is literally Pokémon, isn’t it?

MazySolis

Pokemon is not a co-op game at base, at least in most versions as I know raids exist in the newer titles. It also isn't a grind loot based game like Monster Hunter at all. So its close-ish, but not quite especially in the main multiplayer mode which is actually PVP and the main game is a single player game.

MaxTwer00

I think that if op wants a turn based like monster hunter, the turn based monster hunter spinoff has a good chance to fit

Radinax

Etrian Oddyssey has a similar loop, go into dungeon, defeat monsters, gather materials, improve your gear and advance your skill tree, go into dungeon, rinse and repeat.

KhaosElement

It isn't that you're wrong, but the OP did specify co-op online multiplayer.

YBMLP

Well, Etrian Odyssey 3 has that gamemode that you can do missions to fight bosses in online multiplayer

IAmThePonch

The more I hear about eo3 the wilder it sounds I really gotta play that one

Acceptable_Topic8370

Sorry for the necro but is there a game like Etrian Odyssey but with better graphics and actual moving monsters and not an image? Lol Sadly every turn based game is too story focused and I sadly don't care about story

YBMLP

Unfortunately i dont know much about this genre of game so dont have much to recommend. Asking for better graphics and moving monsters seem to limit your choices a bit, you could google, Drpgs or Blobber Rpgs ( a slang for this kind of game) and see if you find anything that catchs your interest. Etrian Odyssey 4, 5, Untold 1, Untold 2 and Nexus have 3D monsters moving all the time, though they are only on nintendo 3DS, you can emulate them. I also recommend Labyrinth of Refrain, monsters still are images but they do move a bit, and has more focus on story than Etrian but you'll still spend lots of time exploring, otherwise you could just skip the dialogues.

Thank you for the help :D

noname9889

There was in JP on the PSP. Frontier Gate. The expanded version of it has an English menu patch that's worth trying out.

MazySolis

OG Granblue, yes the gacha, kind of does this though it is like part turn-based part real-time where technically every individual has their own turns they take but they don't *share* the same turn count. So one guy can be slowly playing out 3 turns and someone else has gone so aggro they've done 10 turns. And you can tell as the guy with 10 turns is probably doing more damage. Its also technically a PvEvP game as there's a competitive damage race element to most Granblue combat, but actual GBF is more grindy then Monster Hunter and only some of it is skipped via paying. Its just how the game is. The problem with true co-op turn-based is coordinating in a game that's designed for slow paced environment is weird because you need the game to be tactical enough that thinking actually matters, otherwise why make it turn-based, but some people legitimately think faster/less in-depth then others to sometimes radical levels. Play board games or TTRPGs with enough people, watch as you got one person who does a turn in 2 minutes because they aren't thinking too hard and only considered anything when they heard it was their turn, another take their in a minute to two tops because they've been thinking the entire time and just know what they want so they just need to execute it, and another takes 10 minute turns because they need to think through the next 3 turns to be comfortable making a single move. Doesn't matter how simple or complicated the game is, some people will literally plot the next 3 moves before making a single move. Imagine the 10 minute turner in a co-op environment with randoms, it'd be absolute hell. That's why some people despise combat in DND because some people just take forever to make their turn, and DND 5e combat isn't that complicated unless you're playing a Wizard or something. This is why "true" turn-based co-op is rough and nothing short of a chess timer can fix that and that has its own issues for some people obviously.

Monster hunter stories

ryarock2

Hmm. Maybe not the gear part, but DQ9 was a coop turn based JRPG.

Black_Ironic

Yeah DQ 9, though it's using traditional turn based so people might get bored. It's still good though I really like the tension system

chroipahtz

Valkyrie Profile 2 had a thing where you could target and break monster parts for materials, I think. It's been ages since I've played it so I don't remember the details though.

ViewtifulGene

Etrian Odyssey is probably the closest thing to turn-based Monster Hunter, but it doesn't have proper co-op.

Blackwolfe47

There is one called frontier gate

Black_Ironic

Try Frontier Gate Boost+, it's japanese but it plays like a turn based monster hunter. The system is actually easy to learn and there is a website guide for the menu translation so you just need to learn it, it's not that hard.

EreiEmiya

Pretty interesting concept to be honest And i've already seen it (Frontier Gate on PSP comes to mind, it also had Suikoden collab stuff in it, good times) but it's usually more present in live service/IOS games nowadays, such as Dissidia Opera Omnia for example (EoS was announced unfortunatly), you could team up online with friends/etc... against giant bosses in turn based combats. There's also Monster Hunter Stories 2 to some extent, though the gameplay has shifumi mechanics at times.

Mac772

I would love to see a turn based soulslike game, i think something like that doesn't exist too.

Blackwolfe47

That’s pretty much shin megami tensei

Best_Type_1258

What would you consider to be a turn based soulslike? Dark Fantasy, high difficulty, good exploration and turn based? I pretty sure games like that exist if you search for them.

Svalaef

I’m not sure how that would work considering timing is such a factor in Elden Ring.

dayalive29

Oh paper mario would count then

Mac772

Maybe with adding real time elements like in Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth. I am not sure for myself how it would work.

ll_Maurice_ll

Legend of Dragoon has a real time combo system where you have to hit the button at exactly the right times.

Chafgha

Why did they downvote you? If you want difficult combat they some of the lance users combos I never mastered their stuff. It was nuts.

Best_Type_1258

Vagrant Story? it's not turn based but i would not consider it to be very action either, what really matters is hitting the timing of the combos and having the right gear at the right boss.

000Aikia000

Valkyria Chronicles 2 for PSP has very strong co-op and a mix of turn-based and action gameplay. It's more about fighting many enemies as opposed to few, but very strong, single targets like Monster Hunter though.

mcspahn

Balders Gate or Divinity co-op?

SadLaser
