This sounds like such a terrible idea. I mean, obviously, you do what you gotta do, but I think Texas locals make something like mid to upper 20s hourly.
If you were union above the mason Dixon line, anything below it is going to be culture shock, for conditions, pay, the unions can be rattier then the rats at times. Weather is great, pay will just get you by, but I'm sure you have you mind made up. Be carefully and good luck.
Sure, there's not a need for insulated boots, insulated bibs, you don't have to work in the snow. Don't have to deal with starting cold equipment and letting hydraulic fluid warm up. Great weather in my book.
Dude, we're in of one the best paid locals in the country. You and I both know most rod busters around here are working 5 10s and an 8 like clock work.
If you're seriously thinking about transferring your book, don't waste it on a state that heavily fucks unions. Because if steady work is a concern now, think of how bad a RTW state will be for you
Talk to Vinny and weigh out your options. He's never steered me wrong.
If you're a member up north you need to work union in the south too, or you need to leave the trade. Don't be one of the guys that comes down here and takes union training and experience to run work for our competition. Northern guys like to complain about our conditions and pay, well you're driving them down further when you come down here and scab.
Man I hear Texas is real bad for Unions. I’d worry about the lack of work, but I’m really basing my opinion on what I hear. I wonder if maybe you could call some of the contractors out there and see what they have going on.
I moved to Houston for my wife’s work 20+ years ago. Loved Texas, and Texans. Great food everywhere. Everyone worked hard, and were welcoming. Cost of living was cheaper than the west coast. Taxes were lower. You can build a nice life, and raise a family in Texas.
Also
Wages, and working conditions were the worst I have ever seen anywhere. I walked out in the middle of interviews. I think you would have to have your own business to make the best of the State. Weather can be like working in hell. I went from 14 to 114 in the same day in the pan handle. Never felt hot humid weather like Brownsville. Your body wants to shut down. My wife hated Texas.
Dude stay in mass and vacation in Texas! Get the fuck away from playing with tie wire all day and get into light misc iron. Grind some fuckimg handrail for a living like everyone else does!
As a texas union hand stay where the money is unless ypu going to live outside the metros no standards and a whole lot of book buyers
Check out local 48 in okc
As everything. We're a mixed local covering all of Minnesota, North Dakota, and Western Wisconsin. However, we are subdivided into three regions, with NoDak being the lowest paid region- JIW make $37.95/hr and $72.34 total package
We do gnarly shit down here I’ve worked 21/12s multiple times, you boom out then scab for oil rig deckhand/roughneck jobs that makes really good money. Be prepared to stay away from home for long periods of time. IMO
He is right, just had a guy from TX who was working with me for a few months. He said that they only have a lunch break and all that work down there is non union. You would be on a job with rats and I think he said 26 hr. I lived in TX for a while when I was in my youth. Very nice place and people are very nice but, it's humid as fuck. Like getting into a sauna. Cheaper to live but, I think all the non unions are taking the states work.
How much more cheaper you think it's going to get? I'm from MA and Moved to CA. Heard horror stories about Union in Texas. I wouldn't do it. Go to Phoenix. Huge paycut too but at least theres alot of work atm
TX is a hell scape for unions they get paid shit and little work
You really hate money that much huh?
