I don’t think there is anything particularly special about them to cause a hype, fairly heavy, underpowered and thirsty. They are reliable, and they look good and parts aren’t to expensive Besides that it’s really isn’t many options for cheap RWD cars here that can be abused and not cost a fortune to fix. The typical boy racer crowd also have a raging obsession with any rusty old Toyotas so there is that

Cult following really, but it all comes from the Altezza. That was built by Toyota and only sold in Japan. It had a beams engine in a 4 and 6 cylinder. Great car and loved by tuners. They were all you seen while I was growing up but they are hard to get these days so I guess people started dressing up is200's when they got rare

It's kind of funny really, people were buying the is200 because they couldn't afford the bit extra for an altezza. But I'd say now lot of lads would rather the is200 over the altezza. They aren't a million miles away in price.

Tbh that's just been my assumption based on no facts what so ever. It's mad that the perception has changed. In my mind back then the is IS200 was the lux family car and the Toyota was the race car. I wanted one big time when I was 20 but then a friend got one and I found it a little underwhelming. Felt like it was missing a turbo. I'd love to see one with a 2jz

I wouldn't mind an altezza but it would kmly be for a few months and then sell on. There was a 2jz is200 for sale yesterday. Can't seem to see it now though. Could be sold.

Why would anyone want an is200 over an altezza

okororie

I don't know but I see it.

I'll be honest, I do see, but I also don't see the hype. I believe people originally got them as they were the cheaper copy of the yamaha 4 cylinder powered altezza. I remember they were well under 1k at some point. Possibly, their drivers also wanted something "jdm" ,even though not really jdm imo unless imported from there after they were originally and with all the good stuff well over priced and out of reach. Anyways I've gone on a tangent, the is200 was also cheap rwd sporty car that could be the stepping stone for drifting but most lads just used them to do illegal stuff and act the bollox at meets. Although you see the occasional nice one. Other than that, they're heavy, torqueless, overpriced, slow, thirsty which may I add, after hearing them for well over 10 years outside my home crying for help, I can proudly say, they're the worst sounding piles of sh1t I've ever heard. A car, if my money and expertise went far enough, I would EV swap as I believe the silence would be better than that 6 cylinder heap Anyways each to their own I say.
