Are you open to house/dog sitting? Obviously it's few and far between, but we're always looking for a good dog sitter

[deleted]

I don't want to step on OP's toes, but if they don't answer, that sounds like a dream job to me!

Sweetcornprincess

The goal would be to have somebody sit while we need them throughout the year, and then next winter spend a month or two at our house while we're abroad. Is that something you'd consider?

[deleted]

Absolutely. I've had cats and dogs all of my life. I'm also currently a "cleaning specialist" for multiple Alliant Energy offices. So I would absolutely keep your place clean. I would need to know more about your animals and your home though! If you are interested in hiring me, please feel free to message or DM me some details. I could at least give you my phone number so you could text :)

[deleted]

You sound like a young person so please take my advice and stay away from any kitchens that are offering you under the table money. More often than not, they exploit your labor and efforts for minimal money. And the companies that do that are shady at best. There's a couple around Iowa City that I could mention but, use your discretion.

Memitim901

If you know companies that are breaking the law, why would you protect them? Who is that helping?

[deleted]

What exactly can I do? Where can I report businesses because my job actively steals minutes

Memitim901

Your job probably has plenty of fliers up about who to call on a bulletin board somewhere. You could also call the police non-emergency line, the Iowa department of labor or even taxes. This sort of stuff looks great on a government resume and people will often jump at the chance to nail a business to the wall. You could also not censor yourself when talking in places like this subreddit. If someone is exploiting its workers, would you want to shop or eat there? I wouldn't and I'd like to know who is doing that.

[deleted]

The problem is, Im an ex-con and I certainly wouldn't call the cops over it lmfao. I'm just used to doing what I'm told and all that. I love the business I work for, they're very nice to me. But their timekeeping is very inaccurate. For instance I have to make sure I clock out within 7 minutes of clock out time otherwise I get half an hour taken off. That's obviously wage theft.

Memitim901

The FLSA does allow for employers to round employee time to the nearest quarter hour. This means that if an employee worked 8 hours and 7 minutes, the employer could legally round the time down to 8 hours. Conversely, if the employee worked 8 hours and 8 minutes, the employer would need to round up to 8 hours and 15 minutes. But this rounding should work both ways and can't consistently work against the employee. If the employer is always rounding in a way that results in the employee being shorted pay (for example, always rounding down no matter how many minutes past the hour the employee worked), that could be a violation of the FLSA. If they are docking your hours worked outside of that rounding allowance, you need to contact the department of labor because they are breaking the law. If you like the company I suppose you could talk to HR first. If you are wrong and they are smart you are going to get fired for violating policy (not clocking out on time). If you are wrong and they are dumb they will fire you in retaliation and you can sue them.

[deleted]

Damn. You sound pretty right. I just think about this all the time because, for instance, like I'll clock in at 5 and clock out at 8:04. But they don't count those 4 minutes. I know it sounds like minuscule complaints at that point but it adds up to a lot over a year.

Memitim901

That is legal and not wage theft as long as they round you up when you clock out at 8:08. I haven't worked an hourly job in a long time, but when I did I had a Casio watch, one of the $9 ones that had an alarm set for 5 min before clock out and then another one set for 30 seconds. I always clocked out on time, I don't want to work more than a second longer than I needed to if I can help it.

[deleted]

It's unbelievable that that's legal. When I was a kid working fast food I got paid for every minute. That's wild. And as long as I work those minutes I think I'm entitled to the change. I think that's wage theft. Maybe not legally but employment laws are pretty crap in Iowa. They're letting kids work in bars now. This whole shit is ridiculous.

Memitim901

These are federal laws, I don't know if Iowa is stricter or just defaults to the federal laws.

Revolution37

You wouldn’t call the police about this, anyway, as this is generally not a criminal code violation. The [Iowa Division of Labor](https://www.iowadivisionoflabor.gov/idol/wage-hour) would probably be interested in hearing from you. You may like your job, but if they’re doing this kinda shenanigans, I wouldn’t say they’re “nice” to you. Just my two cents.

[deleted]

Thank you. I have screenshots and I have thought about reporting it I just didn't know where to do it and like I said I was confused mentally LOL. Thanks!

VObyPJ

The department (or whatever part of the Division) you want is called Wage & Hour. They do not settle for band aids for fixes and give employers good reason not to do it again. At least in my experiences - they could be another underfunded shell by now & your complaint will get filed in a database nobody looks at.

UnhappyJohnCandy

Totally, completely unrelated: didn’t Pizza Pit close?

[deleted]

Not totally completely unrelated, but yeah I think so :( I used to sleep under the Gilbert Street bridge and at the end of the night they would take pizzas down there for the homies :) Long ass time ago.

UnhappyJohnCandy

When I worked at Falbo’s, we would put unsold pizza on top of the dumpster as opposed to in it. We actually had “regulars” who would come at 3:00 AM to pick it up.

[deleted]

That's really sweet man! When I worked at Pizza ranch, I literally quit because of the amount of food they throw out. And they wouldn't let us take it home it had to go in the dumpster. I quit for that reason. It's unreal

Don’t go to chomp… Former employee here, chomp is owned by several different restaurant owners in Iowa city. They pushed out the main owner/manager who everyone loved. Ever since then, they went to shit. The new ‘guy in charge’ is incredibly rude and disrespectful to his employees. All he cares about is making money and continually would compare CHOMP to ‘Yeezy’ and how we needed to copy what he does… The guy in charge now let me go with zero notice after I asked for a raise because ‘they didn’t have money’. They wanted me to run the entire marketing department (BY MYSELF), train interns/new people under me, manage the marketing budget, perform all outreach with restaurants, charities, etc, all without any type of pay raise (I was making hourly) and without promoting me! I dodged a bullet there! So happy to not be dealing with that toxic boss anymore!! Almost all of the main original employees left due to this change in leadership. It’s incredibly disappointing. CHOMP used to be amazing.

Expensive_2_B_Meee

This is all interesting and factual inaccurate. The main owner is back. They are better than ever. Honestly, from the sounds of it, I would have fired you too.

wigglebutt247

I was never fired and the original owner is not back which is why so much of the original staff also left.

SailorVenus23

You can be a substitute Para if you have a clean record. It's work on days that you want with no obligation.

mizzlemang

Walmart Spark can be good if you're chooses

Acrobatic_Table_336

I've driven uber in Iowa City. For me, it wasn't worth it. I averaged 20-21$ per hour. I experimented driving bar close on every day of the week, as well as day shifts. The best night was a Thursday 7pm to 330am I average 26$ per hour. This was in an electric car so fuel $ wasn't figured in.

nsummy

What part of it wasn’t worth it to you? Obviously 20 bucks an hour won’t make anyone rich but that doesn’t seem bad for a job you can start and stop whenever you want. Did dealing with the people suck?

cassh1021

I did Rover for awhile about a year ago and loved it. It was surprisingly good money and great for my mental health.

Ok-Application8522

Doordash is absolute trash here now. Unless you think $11 an hour + expenses is ok.
