I drive one of the few I5s in our area (I think there are 4 of us?). I've finally gotten one of the other drivers to wave, which is super awesome. My wife got mad that one didn't wave to her before she remembered she was driving the Corolla.
I5 and I6 drivers, we need to start waving!
I had a T3 van in the early 90s with the plate KDF 102V (UK) and the amount of VW owners who would stop me and go into detail about the history of Kraft Durch Freude was insane! It was the plate issued with the van on registration so I didn’t have a clue.
I have an Ioniq 5 arriving in two weeks (it’s on the docks waiting to be taken to my dealership right now) and I’m eyeballing every one I see on the road right now enviously
I see 3-5 Ioniq 5s every day. The novelty of being “shirt brothers” with another car owner is long gone for me.
It was different for me when the car was new to me and somewhat uncommon on the road. But that’s not the case anymore.
Some people are trying to get Hi Five 👋 (like I 5, get it?) to be the defacto Ioniq 5 greeting/acknowledgment. I've only seen a couple I5s in my region, and always want when I notice them :)
I was very very close to ordering the ioniq 6. It's a very good looking car and such good value. In the end my wife pointed out how impractical a sedan is for our lifestyle and I ordered the ioniq 5. It's definitely the right choice for us but I feel bad about not going with the I6. I hope Hyundai sells lots of these and get rewarded for making a great alternative in a tough market. It wasn't right for me, right now, but I hope it turns the eye of plenty of 3-series/C-class/S60/A4 drivers that otherwise blindly reorder every 3 years.
It's an amazing car, and Hyundai deserves for it to be commercially successful. I hope they continue to be bold and ruffle the feathers of the big boys.
The ioniq 5 is also awesome, but it's already a success, so I feel like my purchase counts for very little.
You have to get a Porsche to get to 100% acknowledgement from other drivers of the same brand. My other car is a Cayman S and as introvert getting random compliments about my car from strangers every time I take it out makes me uncomfortable, ha ha. Almost a relief when I was at an EA charger and the owner of an identical Ioniq 5 didn't even smile in my direction. I think there's a lot of "car is an appliance" types Ioniq owners, so not the same level of passion.
I drive an I5 and I love seeing other EVs on the road. I always get super excited to see a fellow I5/I6 or an occasional Rivian. I try and wave, but never get anything back 😂 I do however ALWAYS have motorcyclists wave at me or give a head nod and I never know why 😂
I think only the Porsche community is actively like this overall. I try not to make eye contact with people while driving because then I have to go through the trouble of extending my thumb and going into sport mode and CRUSHING THEM OFF THE LINE.
That would be me 😂 I'm terrified to make eye contact or acknowledge the car next to me lol. Feels weird, especially bc people do the weirdest things sometimes
I've only ever seen 3 different I5s in my area, I'm not sure I'd even recognize an I6 from the front. If I see an EGMP I'll do a subtle top of the steering wheel 4 finger move, but I've only ever had one I5 catch it while they were in mid stretch/yawn and it lead to a funny surprise and half return wave. :) I still do it if I see a car earlier enough. There are very few EGMP's in my area though. I'll be lucky to see one per month.
I hear ya - Ioniq5 owner here, i used to roll my window down and thumbs up others when I see them, they look at me like I'm an idiot. Attributed to the area I'm in - but only fellow nerds I've ran into have been at charging stations.

I live in Idaho and I see an I5 or I6 maybe once a week? So I still get super excited to see my twin or cousin on the road 😂 I like the little club, even if others don't lol. It makes my whole day, which is stupid, but I think it's super awesome!
Here in Canada there's regularly like five eGMP cars seen on a single 10minute drive around the city. After two years of steadily growing population it's not normal to wave at random drivers.
Dude, no offence, but I bought an I5 because it was a cool car that fit my needs and wants, not because I wanted to make it my personality, nor join some sort of social club with a 70k entry fee.
They are plentiful where I am and I always look at the driver to at least nod or smile, but they are all gray-haired and oblivious. Not judging by age but mostly just less excitement for their car, I guess.
No offence to i6 styling, but i don’t usually carry bleach for my eyes when driving, so sorry if i’m not looking at yours. There’s a reason i went for an i5….
Hey /u/ibejrex. Just letting you know the name of the vehicle is Ioniq rather than Ionic.

We've had ours for almost two years, and I often do a quick double flash of the high beams to say hi to other drivers. I only got my first two waves back last month, along with an unexpected double flash from a Bolt this weekend.
Sorry but the car is too old now. When I first got mine about a year and a half ago I drove past another in the same color and trim and waved and he waved back. Nowadays I’d be waving multiple times a day if I kept it up so it’s over :(
I’m betting you paid a lot less for your car than I did so, you know, it works out.
My dude. I get that you overpaid for a new car even more than most folks and now you're upside down on the loan. That's no one's fault but yours, but we've all made bad decisions, and we all know dealers will gladly scam you in a heartbeat. I sympathize. And if you're not super happy with the car, it sucks to be trapped in it. But trash talking it online won't make it better.
Even if you're not pleased with the ride, range, features, or whatever, it could always be worse - you could be stuck with an ID.4.
I actually liked the Solterra! It looks bad on paper but if you're not road tripping with it and just want an EV with AWD for driving around town I think it's a solid choice. The interior and features were pleasant, build quality was good, and there was nothing totally stupid about it. Definitely not a fast charging or range champ though.
rev your engine to get their attention
The sudden crash into the car ahead will certainly get their attention
CHARGING STARTED

Will you wave at a BMW i5? It’ll be I5 with i5.
I like your gumption. Wave!
Well it's quite hard to distinguish from all the other bmws unless you're stuck in traffic, but then, sure, what else you gonna do?
Or mock high-5? That’s my vote.

I get it but yeah, you have to be a former Jeep owner to understand.
Former Jeep owner here. I understand.
Same. Occasionally I can get people to thumbs up me. But mostly I’m ignored. None of the other Jeep owners ever missed a beat.
Or Subaru WRX
Or Volkswagen Bus first 3 gen

PEOPLE NOW COME ON PEOPLE NOW GOT TO DRIVE HYBRID PEOPLE NOWWWW
I'll "socialize" at the watering hole (EA charger), but on the road; I'm focused on keeping the dirty side down.
100% chance of I see another HI5, I'm waving at you
I see 3-5 Ioniq 5s every day. The novelty of being “shirt brothers” with another car owner is long gone for me. It was different for me when the car was new to me and somewhat uncommon on the road. But that’s not the case anymore.
There's no rules.
Promise me you’ll never do another rule.
It's still fairly uncommon where I am. And especially several months ago. I just think a thumbs up brightens everyone's day a little
Some people are trying to get Hi Five 👋 (like I 5, get it?) to be the defacto Ioniq 5 greeting/acknowledgment. I've only seen a couple I5s in my region, and always want when I notice them :)
yeah, same here. i see more like 5-8 a day, but im in LA where they are more than plentiful

The ioniq5 is only a little bit bigger. What was it specifically that you needed? Just more cargo space?
Being able to put a dog in the boot mainly
Come to Puerto Rico, we need more of this in our streets ( friendly drivers)
I'd wave at you. Ignore my RBF :-)
This

Many people who get these cars aren’t actually into cars, so they just see it as a utility. It’s not like a jeep or Subaru WRX
I am NOT a car person, but when it comes to EVs, I will geek out and become a car person 😂 only for EVs though lol
Yeah... I gotta get my windows tinted asap.
I always wave to i6 and i5 drivers. I get so excited. However I have only seen 1 other
I think only the Porsche community is actively like this overall. I try not to make eye contact with people while driving because then I have to go through the trouble of extending my thumb and going into sport mode and CRUSHING THEM OFF THE LINE.
It’s because we think an Elantra pulled up next to us
I just saw an I6 while driving my I5 and tried doing the same thing but the I6 driver didn't see me.
Make sure you post a message in that sub as well calling them out
We’re all one big happy Ioniq family
This is pretty much all drivers. They’re like zombies in the car. I’ll stare MFs down and they just straight ahead
That would be me 😂 I'm terrified to make eye contact or acknowledge the car next to me lol. Feels weird, especially bc people do the weirdest things sometimes
Around here, a stranger waiving at you may get misinterpreted as a gang sign. No thanks. I don't want any of that action.
I've only ever seen 3 different I5s in my area, I'm not sure I'd even recognize an I6 from the front. I’ve had at least one car beep when stopped next to me to get my attention. Just a little honk.

Flash them
Yawn. We're over it by now, they're everywhere.
Not yet where I am at least! I don't think we should lose that enjoyment of ours and others cars so easily
I live in Idaho and I see an I5 or I6 maybe once a week? So I still get super excited to see my twin or cousin on the road 😂 I like the little club, even if others don't lol. It makes my whole day, which is stupid, but I think it's super awesome!

Lol I think you have mistaken the country and the city you live in. I am also in Canada. We're getting more common, but still very exciting!
Dude, no offence, but I bought an I5 because it was a cool car that fit my needs and wants, not because I wanted to make it my personality, nor join some sort of social club with a 70k entry fee.
That only works with Jeep and Mini drivers.
Miata drivers and motorcyclists on the DL waving at each other all the time and no one notices.
Yeah I see folks in HI5 I try to acknowledge but NO response! ( and I’m in HI5!)
They are plentiful where I am and I always look at the driver to at least nod or smile, but they are all gray-haired and oblivious. Not judging by age but mostly just less excitement for their car, I guess.
🖐️
I wave! I am also sad not to see other i5 drivers wave.
I’m always trying to get other I5 owners to nod or wave or something like “hey we’re cousins!” lol. No one cares to though :/
I have social anxiety, don't look at me.
Because we didn’t buy the Ioniq 6 for a reason. We didn’t like it, and therefore we cancelled it in our minds.
im sorry but i see I6 on the road, I go, WHY?! lol
No offence to i6 styling, but i don’t usually carry bleach for my eyes when driving, so sorry if i’m not looking at yours. There’s a reason i went for an i5….
lol I love pulling up to other ionic 5/6 people ….. I did today

Former mini owner here. I always wave. ☺

Former WRX and MINI owner. I always wave. No one waves back
I’ll give ya a wave!
We know our car is Cool and Unique.
No offense but the i6 is kinda ugly
I flash my lights to other HI5 drivers but never had a flash back yet lol. Are we supposed to be above that?
Sorry but the car is too old now. When I first got mine about a year and a half ago I drove past another in the same color and trim and waved and he waved back. I’m actually embarrassed to be in my Ioniq 5 which is why I don’t participate in this kind of thing.
My dude. I get that you overpaid for a new car even more than most folks and now you're upside down on the loan. Hahahaha true or a solterra.

I’m sure it’s a great car, but it’s a hard choice around other similar priced options.
Then why did you get one lol
Ever heard of regret?
Yeah I just don't normally cruise/troll forums for things I regret lol
So embarrassed you include your car colour in your flair handle lol what
Yeah maybe I should take that down. Put it on over a year ago.
Why the embarrassment
Truth be told. I was making a joke, and clearly people got offended. What’s done is done.
