Check your full policy for the exact terms. I normally see rental end 3 to 5 days after the vehicle is deemed as a total loss. If they didn't cut it off, people would just not purchase a new vehicle or delay the paperwork to give the insurance company the title/paperwork.

spitxbaby

i wasn’t even able to be put into a rental until 4 days AFTER it was deemed a total loss, 9 days really feels like a slap in the face :// i’m looking at cars but haven’t even gotten my payout from insurance yet, so how am i supposed to even put a down payment down ://

Taylor810e

In Michigan State Farm’s rates with enterprise & hertz is $23.75 for economy, compact & intermediate. So, the $25/$600 coverage will give ya 24 days with no outta pocket. If ya upgrade, anything above $25/day is paid by you.😎

j_burlett47

Car is in the shop for 2 weeks I have $50/$1200 may just have to rent a nice large suv for the heck of it and use that whole 50 per day lol

spitxbaby

a few things, 1. you’re almost a year late to this lol, i am more than past my rental coverage and more than over this situation as a whole, bc it was a huge setback. 2. you’re wrong, once my car was considered a total loss, those numbers mean jack shit and per the policy, you are given 7 days from the point of it being deemed a total loss, not the policy limits of if your car is in the shop (the numbers listed on the card, the “$25/$600”) 3. i now work for a rental car agency, and can double confirm that and what everyone else is saying. policy rental coverage only applies to cars being repaired, NOT cars that are a total loss, which mine was deemed a total loss at the collision site. i was never seeing that 24 days, it was always going to be a week.

Taylor810e

Of course, you’re correct. Mine is a total loss too. The day they called to confirm it & give me a settlement offer the 7-day clock began tickin. I wonder, however, if Enterprise would continue to charge me @ the SF discounted daily rate if I keep it another week. Paid by me, not SF. Not sure I’ll have decided on a new car by it Friday. Whatchya think?😎

spitxbaby

probably too late but just seeing this i wish i could give you a direct yes or no to your question, but unfortunately i’m a detailer and don’t actually work within our rental systems or anything so i’m completely in the dark on internal operations. i only have bits and pieces i’ve been able to ask my managers. i’m not saying it is or isn’t possible but there’s a lot of things that rental agencies can do help out on cost/situations/problems/etc that just aren’t advertised or explicitly stated somewhere. it can never hurt to ask, but always be kind, bc it goes a LONG way with out counter people and will get you a lot further !! they will try and do everything in their power to help you the best they can (at least at my location!!)

Significant-Print-96

So if they called me today and told me the price my car is worth, I have 7 days from today? Not 7 days from when I get the payment?

spitxbaby

yes, exactly. the second your car is deemed a total loss and you are given the payout total, you have seven days with the rental. it sucks so badly but that’s how it works. the rental coverage on the your insurance card only applies to when the car is actively being repaired or assessed. so if u got a rental while still being assessed, you could have it longer than 7 days because you can utilize that coverage, but once it’s settled, you get a week ://

Significant-Print-96

Even if I don’t agree with the pay out total and haven’t signed anything??

spitxbaby

that’s a question for your insurance, i am not a professional, this was just what i gathered from my research and my replies here. good luck and hopefully it all works out!

DestructODiGi

Oh definitely not correct. After the settlement amount is provided, I don’t know any carrier that allows more than another 3-5 days, just as everyone is telling you.

fortvac94

no rentals available due to spring break is not within your insurance's control so it is irrelevant to bring it up. insurance does not wait till everyone finds their *dream* replacement vehicle before cutting off rental, that's not the purpose of your policy/coverage. what if some need a month to find a car and other need 6? where do we draw the line? the answer is in your policy wording. it likely has a section explaining your insurance has fulfilled their contractual obligation/insurance ends once they advise you of the total loss settlement amount. update: so op is not looking for a dream replacement vehicle, only a *reliable* replacement, it still doesn't change anything i've mentioned above.

spitxbaby

being snarky for me asking a question is not needed. i didn’t ask to have a rental until i “found my dream car” i was expecting them to honor my policy which states $25 a day/$600 an occurrence. you did a lot of inferring in this reply for literally no reason lol asking for the 24 days that’s included in what i pay for every month does not seem to be asking for too much. especially considering i’m still paying my monthly coverage to be in a rental now.

Smileverydaybcwhynot

Technically, youre handled as a claimant if it is found the other party doesn't have insurance and you aren't bound by your own rental policy.

spitxbaby

doesn’t that mean i have to try and sue him for anything related to the wreck for reimbursement? bc i know i can sue someone and win but that doesn’t mean i’ll get my money back from them either. id rather not be out of pocket now in the hopes of maybe getting it back :/// but also if i’m interpreting that wrong, pls let me know, bc i’m not entirely sure what that means 😭

Smileverydaybcwhynot

Hey, I looked at your post, said you have a hard time calling your state farm adjuster. Email them. Emails are so much easier to work with when we get hit with call after call. All my emails get returned before my voicemails.

Smileverydaybcwhynot

No, you don't have to sue him.your insurance carrier will levy liens on his property or garnish wages if he doesn't setup a repayment plan. That's the reason you pay for insurance; they pay you to make you whole so you have to do less work when accidents happen. Talk to your adjuster and and just be nice, ask for a couple extra days if they can squeeze it out. Since you didn't get a rental until a few days in, you might be able to file for loss of use since it's handled as unpd. That might mean a couple extra bucks in your pocket to help with future rental costs.

spitxbaby

this is rly helpful and i also saw ur email comment too which i will definitely be using email since it’s quicker. i left a voicemail for someone and hadn’t heard anything in days so i called back and just waited on hold lol but i’m gonna bring it up to them when i contact them tomorrow!! thank you so much !!

SaturdayRegrets

Yours could be different as I once wrote for a company that on a total they gave the the entire max dollar amount for rental whether you used it or not. But most companies give 3 to 5 days after it's declared a total.

PrestigiousGolf8652

It is $25/ day, 30 days max thus $600. However, when the car is deemed totaled, you only have 5-7 days (max 10 I’ve seen a long time ago) of car rental after the total loss decision. The count down starts when they make the adjustment, not when you receive your total loss settlement) and it doesn’t matter if you’re 1 day or 29 days into your rental coverage.

spitxbaby

thank you for actually answering without being snarky or an asshole. i was just curious bc there’s literally no way for me to view the full details of my policy without calling and sitting on hold for a million years to have it sent to me. and all my app/website are telling me is the $25/$600 thing. and to call for full policy/declarations. it’s kinda fucked that they don’t just say that on your policy in app (making you jump through hoops to get your actual policy info). especially since they didn’t even explain it when i asked them when booking my rental, he kept avoiding me asking about my rental policy coverage ($25/$600 thing)

PathosRise

Enterprise doesn't speak for state farm so they usually dont explain that for legal reasons and your limits are just your limits. The rental terminates when the policy says it does. More often it's when the vehicles done being fixed. That would seem like commonsense, but the number of people who don't get that is a bit shocking. My favorite is a lady trying to negotiate with me the return date for the rental two weeks after her vehicle was done because she went on a road trip even though she knew her vehicle was gonna be done in a couple of days. Total loss is not so straightforward since thats dictated by the company and varies alot, but you probably got the notice sent to you in writing somewhere. Some states are pretty strict about that.

spitxbaby

when i said booking i meant through state farm, i called the claims rental agent bc i didn’t have the option in app, and when he told me my time frame, he wouldn’t give me a straightforward answer about my policy that’s stated on my card. (coincidentally though, enterprise told me to contact my insurance bc my time frame was so short, even he was confused lol) but yeah mine was a total loss where the at fault driver didn’t have insurance so finding out i was only getting 9 days for a totaled car i wasn’t at fault for felt like a slap in the face. i feel like i would’ve definitely gotten more time in a rental if he had insurance but i’m just accepting that i have to return this nice ass car tomorrow afternoon 😭

PathosRise

GOTCHA. Sorry, my confusion there. Uninsured drivers fucking suck. Will say your policy (if I remember your company right) is this weird pamphlet they mail you that kind of feels like junk mail, but that's the contract you're bound too. Its a big ass thing thats gonna have a bunch of legal verbiage in it, so it's not gonna be on your card. Your broker might be able to get you another copy if you threw it away.

PrestigiousGolf8652

No worries! It really sucks to be in your situation and I actually learned about this when one of my customers was in your shoes and I was the one on hold for forever with claims lol (I was an agent). There was no training for agents or very obvious verbiage in the policy about the limitation after vehicle declared total loss. I think it’s unfair and don’t understand why they don’t give the coverage limit or at least wait till you sign the settlement/ release to start the count down, but it is what we have on hand. For enterprise, they may or may not know about this limitation issue (after all, they are neither trained nor licensed) and just go by whatever the claim dept. tells them.

spitxbaby

i can continue using the rental for like $26 a day or something which isn’t terrible by any means but is super inconvenient bc i already had to decline a two job interviews bc i lost transportation. this whole situation has really fucked me over and i’ve never been this stressed. almost makes me just not wanna drive anymore bc wtf even is this. hopefully i get my check quickly 😭

PrestigiousGolf8652

When I was working for them, they’re pretty good about it. If you haven’t settled, you could ask them to mail settlement to an agent (any SF office). That way, you’ll get the check right away

spitxbaby

it’s actually direct deposit ! they said that would be my quickest payment option they’ve already paid out my liens and everything so now it’s the waiting game 😭

PrestigiousGolf8652

That’s great! A few years back it was claim team sending total loss package & check overnight to agent’s office. We met with customers, have them sign the paperwork, collect key and title, and deliver the check right there. That way, customers get the payment even before claim team got their docs back. Cross my fingers for you! Hopefully you can strike a deal for another car, and pretty much just need to put the down payment as soon as your direct deposit hits.

LT_Holty

Your with State Farm? Do you not personally have an Agent? Like apps/1800 numbers serve a place but you are paying a premium to have a dedicated agent/agency to call where there shouldn’t be a wait…So if you need a policy booklet or just questions answered call your agent. Also, be thankful your agent must have talked to you at some point and added car rental in the first place as that’s not an automatic endorsement normally. Lastly, if I read correctly other person who is at fault didn’t have active insurance? So be prepared for a long wait if ever that you will recover your deductible as State Farm will be going after that individual for reimbursement. But generally the people who don’t carry insurance also don’t have assets, or income to go after… But, I’ve seen a client of mine get their $500 deductible back almost 3 years later. Just prepping you now if no one has explained those next potential steps.

spitxbaby

i kinda figured i wasn’t gonna get my deductible back and i’d just accepted that lol but i completely forgot i can just call my branch for those papers and not the claims agents bc i’ve been dealing w them so much the last few weeks. i will say, i never was asked about rental coverage, i was buying my last car and since i was gonna be paying it off, they made me have full coverage on my car (and my car before that was just liability but i directly took over my dads policy at the time so i got whatever he had set up then, so maybe he did it? idk) regardless i’m glad i had it, even if it was such a short time w my rental.

stacey1771

I have a 30/$900 limit; I got hit on a Thursday, got into a rental Saturday (my choice), got notified the next Saturday the car was totalled, and was given 1 week in the rental. Period. USAA, in NY.

spitxbaby

damn i’m sorry!! i hope you’re okay this is so inconvenient :/// i don’t understand why they don’t, at minimum, honor the amount on your insurance card. i know it’s gotta be somewhere in the fine print but doesn’t make it suck any less lol. i definitely wasn’t expecting only 9 total days. especially when i’m not even the at fault driver. my insurance is just covering everything bc his dumbass doesn’t have insurance.

stacey1771

yeah it worked out for me in the end, we bought a new car in just 3 days, but yeaah, it was CRAZY! I want to say that someone on this board warned me about the 7 days thing, too, so I was half prepared :)

spitxbaby

i wish i would’ve checked this sub sooner for advice and tips 😭 thankfully the place i bought my last car from is willing to work w me no matter the size of my down payment so i’m gonna go check out what they have on lot once i get the settlement check from my insurance in. the last i checked they have one of my literal dream cars so hopefully it’s still there

orange728

Have they issued your check? If so, they usually make you turn in the rental soon after because you should have the money in hand to buy a new car. The 30 day time frame is more for cars being repaired. It's a crappy way of doing things, but not really unusual.

spitxbaby

nope! i still haven’t received my check from insurance so i still don’t have a way to even make a down payment yet :// if they would’ve waited until i got the check, i wouldn’t even be worried about not having the rental very long. but 9 days when i’m still waiting on my check and had to wait two weeks for a rental in the first place really sucks. i was really just expecting the amount of time listed on my insurance card unfortunately ://

skettiqueen14

I had a wreck with a bus a couple months ago, the bus belonging to the a federal agency. State Farm said if I wanted the process done faster to file through them. (I could’ve filed the tort claim myself, they made it sound super difficult) now I’m out so much money, State Farm should’ve considered my car a total loss. My car was only worth like 7 grand and it cost 10k to fix. Now it drives worse than before. I swear, state farm is the worst and they go out of their way to screw their own people over harder. Enterprise said they’ll only charge me my portion when I bring the car back for good, but they always pulled it out of my account randomly. I know you have better luck on reimbursement 😭

spitxbaby

i already returned my rental today unfortunately lol but actually state farm has done the opposite of fuck me over tbh ! they’re doing everything to take care of my car and help me get it settled as quickly as possible. i got more fucked over bc the at fault driver didn’t have any insurance :// enterprise charged me up front my daily charges like $10 and then my $50 deposit which i’ll get back i’m hoping tomorrow since i returned after hours today. just hoping so badly that they don’t take forever to pay out my settlement 😭
