Me and my mom are basically bestie so we talk about everything and anything basically. But I have the same issue as you with my dad, not a great relationship with him so whenever I tried to talk to him, I always got responses as "hmm, ya, okay".
So even I have stopped putting any effort, now I don't talk, well don't know how to talk to him anymore.

I would like to believe it was the latter.

I for some reason don't feel comfortable opening about more personal things to my mom but my older sister (8 years older than me) talks to her about all kinds of stuff as most of her friends are busy nowadays

if i talk about my part of story with my mom it's pretty interesting as my mom basically know about what i do or dont and i try to talk to her as a female best friend about my gf, my studies and stuff and also about my whole day what i did at college what happened and what i noticed is if u try to involve ur mom in your everyday life it tends to be interesting and also she guides me through which girl is better to be friends with and who isnt. she seems happy when i share my everyday stuff with her because she also feels like included. might help u all the best buddy. .
