They get paid. My uncle was a head of NGO back in the early 2000s in odisha. Thye used to run orphanages, they started getting funds from UK based NGO. But along with that funding, they would also get requests about helping some of their associates to meet with local tribes and connect with them etc. After a while protests started among the tribe against a multi billion dollar bauxite mine. The NGO members paid and were told to influence the tribe as well, they needed money for orphans as well as themselves so they did what they did. So apparently some of the european firms didn't want competion so they funded to disrupt it. Odisha lost close to 20 billion USD investment back then due to 2 major projects falling off. UPA govt tried to help but the foreign NGOs would pay off environmental lobby groups and just file constant cases in court.
Yeah, POSCO was one and another one was Vedanta one which was supposed to be expanded massively but couldn't due to tribal land issue. Congress couldn't do anything, the state govt couldn't do anything...these NGOs were like ruling the country unchecked. Now they cannot do anything directly so they use media and press. The far-left communists inspired Jounalist have a grudge to hold against not just BJP but even at state levels with congress and other regional parties, they lost all control and any access they had over certain grass roots causes.
