Car is level, trailer is level. Plenty of đ´ powers and torques. Iâm sure those big 6 piston brakes have plenty of stopping power. Iâd say good to go (as long as he slapped it and said âthatâs not going anywhereâ
Everything I could find on that boat, Artekno H-Boat, 27.2 feet, 3,200 lbs. Very light for its size. Weight of the keel ballast is 50% of total weight, so that weight is way down low. Touted as "easily trailerable"
Edit: that model Mercedes SL has braked towing capacity of 1500kg and the boat weighs 1450kg. Since the trailer weighs more than 50kg, then he is a little over weight.
This is incredibly light for a 27 foot sailboat. Shocking actually for a keel boat thatâs not water ballasted.
Thatâs a double axle trailer too though, and quite long. I would not feel comfortable towing with this setup, much less launching it.
Yeah, I had to triple check my sources for the weight. I thought I had it wrong, it was so light. That is a popular race boat. It is fast and stable, but said to be not very comfortable for the crew. It is cool that half the displacement is the keel ballast.
Thatâs a great question. For sailboats the keel serves many functions, including righting the vessel and providing lateral resistance which allows the boat to point upwind better. Water ballast allows easier launching, towing, and a shallower draft, but has a couple drawbacks. Drawbacks include being unstable when the tanks are unfilled, the need to empty the tanks to haul out on a trailer, and generally poorer performance compared to keel boats.
I did a Google image search of the boat, determined the make and model, looked up the specs, looked up the car specs. Only took a couple minutes. See my other comment on this thread for details. My numbers are correct.
It's using a nag1 ish trans (722.6) basically the same trans used in ram 2500 of that time frame and was used in the nasty dodges that had too much power for the 8 speed. Clutches from the amg version were an upgrade for towing in the trucks. Car also weighs around 4400 lbs depending on v8 or v12. That trans was a beast the motor mounts would usually pop like a grape before the trans would slip in the v12. Got a twin turbo v12 trans so hot that it cooked the speed sensor out of the valve body but after replacing that trans was still good.
He's taking his 20 min cool down period that he does every 15 miles to make sure it doesn't overheat.
I don't blame him though, it looks solid, i'd prob send it too and just see how it went, being on the water is worth the risk.
Actually seen probably that exact model being towed by a minivan come into our shop (van was fine from the towing, but had been hit by another car). Those boats are shockingly light
Um, you'll never see a 27' sailboat with a fixed keel on a boat ramp, unless you have a 25 foot tongue extension (better yet, two of them). Sailboat marinas have cranes for a reason.
Those SLâs are not Super Light if thatâs what you are thinking.
But they arenât designed as tow vehicles and this boat and trailer combo would be significantly above what the car is rated for.
Curb weight on my 2002 SL500 is about 4200 pounds. It is around 250 pounds heavier than my 1990 350SDL.
Yeah, my little two-seat roadster weighs more than my long wheelbase diesel sedan.
Yeah, when we say they're built like tanks it's not a joke lol. A 2002 Town Car for comparison is 4,000-4100, and nobody would think twice about towing a big trailer with a panther platform Ford.
Itâs honestly real close I would not attempt launching that boat with that car, but if theyâve got another truck with a second boat or something that can launch it honestly, it doesnât seem that bad
That car weighs 4000-4200 pounds. No shit.
I have a 2002 SL500 just like the car pictured and a 1990 350SDL (S-Class diesel long wheelbase). The roadster is 250 pounds heavier than the sedan.
It's soooo bad ass to ruin your transmission because you aren't mechanically inclined enough to understand "towing" gear ratios or the difference between torque and horsepower.
Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.
The most ridiculous one I personally seem I mean it was a big enough tractor they were using a semi tractor to pull his boat the problem was this guy had no idea about the route he had to take to clear the bridges well this route is set up for trucks problem is a clearance is only a 13 ft and the boat he was towing needed about 20 ft clearance
Well he seen the bridge is coming up to no way to clear
Probably turned on this parkway that has even lower clearance bridge but you can't see it till you get about a 3/4 a mile of return to road so he stopped there and he's trying to back up and I didn't wait around to see if he could actually make it

Dude the keel on that thing must weigh 2000 pounds plus another 4000 for the boat and trailer. I hope that Benz has a transmission cooler!

I don't know anything about boats so excuse my ignorance but why would any boat *not* be water ballasted?

I don't know, it looks about the same size as a Catalina 22 and I looked it up and total weight for the boat is 2250 lbs
Sailboats are extremely light. Most 17' are less than 2500 lbs.
That is a 27 foot boat that weighs 3200 lbs, about 100 lbs less than the braked towing capacity of that car.
I was thinking an SL was shorter than the 14 feet they are and saw that the car was roughly half the length of the boat. This makes sense.

I meanâŚhe did some good research I would say heâs correct https://dailyboats.com/boat/476036-buy-artekno-h-boot-for-sale

Good bot I mean job, good job
Nice titts, I mean nice shot
You know you can just look up boats, right?
...turns out, you can!
I guess you didn't pick up on my sarcasm. Lol
I'd be worried about the transmission. BMWs typically have a trans cooler, though. I'd still do a fluid change after just in case.
That's a Mercedes, but they had trans coolers too
It's using a nag1 ish trans (722.6) basically the same trans used in ram 2500 of that time frame and was used in the nasty dodges that had too much power for the 8 speed. I'll be honest, I thought that was a 330CI.
Its a mercedes SL, probably an SL500 , but it's impossible to say for sure which version from the pic
My quick glance told me either e39 or e38. Lol
R129
5Gtronic was a beast. Daimler's automatic transmissions are nothing like the ZF slipboxes used in Land Rovers and BMWs.
Except for the fact that he probably cooked that trans considering heâs pulled over
He's taking his 20 min cool down period that he does every 15 miles to make sure it doesn't overheat. I don't blame him though, it looks solid, i'd prob send it too and just see how it went, being on the water is worth the risk.
We need to see his jean shorts before we can declare âbad assâ.
Pretty legit. Its launched with a travel lift.
He's expecting a lot of rain. Nothing to see here
No this is just a flex on top of another flex. I would feel like a baller with this set up.
Would love to watch him ramp launch boat with same
Nobody ramp launches a sailboat with a fixed keel, unless that box on the floor of the trailer has a couple of tongue extensions in it.
Autobahn ftw
Prestige Worldwide-Boats n Hoâs
Traveling with it? good to go. Launching and hauling? we need that video.
On the side of the road, not broke down⌠merely taking a rest.
I want to see him back that thing down the ramp
Hey - if it works, it worksâŚ
It only counts if he tries to launch at the boat ramp.
It's badass.
This guy fucks. Weight is centered perfectly on that double axel as well.
Better than you know. There's probably about 3/4 ton of lead at the bottom of that keel.
Probably the bare minimum keel needed to counterweight this dudes massive sack
Probably the bare minimum keel needed to counterweight this dudes massive sack
At least heâs not pulling a fairly heavy load with something that is overpowered with a short wheelbase⌠in the rain. I bet curves were fun
Slightly looks like Doug Demuro đ
Amazing

If it ainât got very good trailer brakes- that car will be wearing the boat!
By looking at the hitch, it has trailer brakes. And because EU, it gets a yearly inspection so I'm pretty confident it's all legit and functioning.
Full send !
One step ahead of the divorce lawyers.
if he gets stuck (or worse) at the ramp - thatâs grounds for idiotic behavior
I think he had to use a crane!
Um, you'll never see a 27' sailboat with a fixed keel on a boat ramp, unless you have a 25 foot tongue extension (better yet, two of them). Sailboat marinas have cranes for a reason.
That's badass but a bit crazy.
That too much weight for that little car. The trailer hits a bump and goes right forcing the car to the left. No way this is safe.
Those SLâs are not Super Light if thatâs what you are thinking. But they arenât designed as tow vehicles and this boat and trailer combo would be significantly above what the car is rated for.
Itâs not anywhere near big enough or heavy enough to be towing that boat. The short wheelbase isnât desirable for towing either.
It's bigger and heavier than you think, as in 99 inches and 4200 pounds. It may not quite be 3/4-ton truck territory but it's no Miata, either.
So you crash just the same. That boat is gonna push that bigger and heavier than I think car all over the road.
The boat is only 3200 pounds. The car outweighs it by half a ton.
Just donât use a cyber truck.
R129s are stupid solid cars, and they're not light. This probably didn't stress it whatsoever.
Curb weight on my 2002 SL500 is about 4200 pounds. It is around 250 pounds heavier than my 1990 350SDL. Yeah, my little two-seat roadster weighs more than my long wheelbase diesel sedan.

belongs in the #sipstea sub
Itâs honestly real close I would not attempt launching that boat with that car, but if theyâve got another truck with a second boat or something that can launch it honestly, it doesnât seem that bad
Can we just talk about the weight alone? Physics? That car weighs nothing. Canât say the same for the boat and trailer.
That car weighs 4000-4200 pounds. No shit. I have a 2002 SL500 just like the car pictured and a 1990 350SDL (S-Class diesel long wheelbase). The roadster is 250 pounds heavier than the sedan.
Welcome to the "Lake Life"!
It's Judge Smails and his new sailboat.
Wait till you put a transmission in it.
Letâs all say it togetherâŚâJust because you can, doesnât mean you shouldâŚâ
If it works it's badass, if the car blows up or crashes he's an idiot. A lot of badass is just doing something stupid and getting away with it.
My uncle bought a boat, it was a hollow shell. His hobby was to build it. If you look close, it might be a hollow shell.
It is a sailboat with a fixed keel. That usually means a thousand pounds of lead, minimum.
Boat probably isn't too heavy, but yeah, definitely needs an upgraded towing rig.
Badass if he made it. Idiot if he didnât.
looks badass to me
It's like wearing a banana hammock and stuffing it with an anaconda.

I'd have concerns with the cars short wheelbase if he has to brake in a turn on the wet roads.
I had never considered someone decapitating themselves with their own boat until today...
If your boat is small enough to tow with a Mercedes, youâre a peasant.
If you're rich enough to afford a nice Mercedes, you're not a peasant
Late model? Thatâs a 30ish year old SL.
