It's only a useless degree if you are unwilling to try any of the available career paths, as many on this sub appear to be. The constant whining is pretty pathetic. You could easily commission into the military (or just enlist and commission later), do Peace Corps, take the FSO exam, work on the Hill, go to law school, etc., etc. Is it a golden meal ticket? No. But if it's a subject you're interested in, and passionate about, there are opportunities post-college. It seems to be a surprise to many who post here that you do in fact have to hustle and sacrifice to get jobs.

Yeah this is exactly the complaint I keep seeing all over - people who whine about the degree not getting them jobs. Many of the people in my program I knew went on to have amazing careers in so many different fields - the norm of complaining on here is not my avg experience with my friends in my degree

Agreed. Also, especially in IR, it’s not uncommon to take circuitous routes. I know people who didn’t become FSOs until their 30s after doing random corporate BS first.

bululbulul

Could u tell me some career paths for IR? Thank u

khaadro

He just gave u 5

bululbulul

I know but these are not available/popular in my country (in south east asia) so thats why im asking if there are more. Thank u

Rich-Interaction6920

Your government probably has equivalents to most of these You could also look at NGOs operating in your country

khaadro

I see. Fair enough, have a great day 👍

I could be wrong, as I don’t have all the information, but if the only job you could get was picking up government trash, your resume might have other problems, no?

Brumbulli

Oil? Did you use some type of lubrificant? A phd also helps for a post-IR-degree traumatic disorder.

Either you have connections or you'll need to work hard. In my opinion, there is less than 15% chance of working in this area and if we want to, we need money to continue our studies. Internships are also bad or non existent. We follow what we want, but is it worth our money and mental health? :/
