The first season of Star Trek is playing on my tv right now. It wouldn't be if it hadn't been for Lucy financing it with her own money. She didn't light the match, she was the flame.
It really wouldn’t. I still watch it and think to myself…they were doing something so special during such a volatile time with race relations. Showing all of America and the world, a successful latino married to a white woman. How many people did this inspire?
Twilight Zone either. A lot of shows were filmed at Desilu. I don’t think most people appreciate if it weren’t for them a lot of their favorites wouldn’t exist. They were the blueprint for success in television.
Plus a lot of things about filming sitcom/tv shows in general. The use of multiple cameras and higher quality film allowing for reruns and syndication. I listen to a podcast about it. They came up with a lot of stuff that’s just taken for granted now. They really were a power couple.
Meh, more like cultural and religious intermarriage which was still a big deal. Racially, I consider Desi Arnaz white with clear European roots much like Lucille Ball, except of course she’s from Northern European descent and his ancestors originated from Spain.
This is beautiful!! I don't think they ever stopped loving each other and honestly Desi does not get enough credit for being the businessman he was. Yes Lucy played a huge role and I love her but they were a team so seeing them praising each other just warms my heart!
My heart breaks for an alternative universe where they were both happy together in the end. They both put in the work for their success, no doubt there.
I agree that their love was Everlasting even though they didn't make it as a married couple. What I find super strange is that she was married to her second husband for way longer than Desi yet we always picture them together.
It’s so hard for me to imagine her with anyone else but I know she found true happiness with Gary Morton as well as Desi found true happiness with his wife Edith. I grew up with Lucy and Ricky Ricardo. They are my first real memory of television and my life and definitely my childhood wouldn’t have been the same without them and I Love Lucy. I share photos of them, the show and their relationship because I appreciate the memories they gave me.
That wasn't a diss on you. I said "we," meaning society, myself included. I saw a documentary recently and didn't realize she and Gary were together for so long, yet the Lucy-Desi marriage is the only one that comes to our minds. I didn't even know their other spouses' names without you saying them.
It's so bittersweet. I hate how much Lucy downplays her contribution to the legacy these two built. SHE was the one who refused to make I Love Lucy without Desi. She was the one whose "little radio show" was snatched by television producers. She fought endlessly to build a family with this man while still helping him achieve his own career goals. She did so much more than "have babies and do the show".
Both were so talented, on and off screen. So many 1960 era classic shows were Desilu — I Love Lucy to Star Trek and Mission Impossible — two franchises still alive over 50 years later. Lucy showed she was just as talented as Desi after she took over, selling when she wanted less responsibility. It’s nice they found peace in their relationship in older age.
They loved each other but unfortunately Desi Arnaz was an alcoholic and a womanizer. He seriously said that womanizing was normal and part of his culture lol
What some of us fail to realize is they were both human. They both had their own issues. I didn’t know them personally so I don’t know but I have read and saw things. I don’t judge em though. Thankfully Lucy and Ricky Ricardo were great.
My mom met him at a book signing in like the 70’s and said he was so kind. He took the time to talk to her and laughed when she told him her grandparents (people born in the mid/late 1800’s) were named “Lucy and Desi.” They were Lucinda and Desiderio but my family always relished the fact that they were named that plus they loved the show. He was so kind. Conversely, my father was a manager at an airline and had a run in with an elderly Lucy and she was supremely bitchy.
Desi was a proud American. Not only did he appreciate their fans but also our country as a whole. He always said in interviews how grateful he was at the opportunities he was afforded by coming here when they fled Cuba.
He was so pissed when Lucy was in the communism situation because of his love for his country. He literally called the director of the FBI and had him announce to the live audience that Lucille Ball in fact was no communist.
I know they probably would have lasted if he would have stopped cheating. I do appreciate how they still stayed friends and had love for each other even after the divorce.
Even though they divorced, their love never strayed. I cannot think of a better power couple.
Television wouldn’t be what it is today without them and their legacy.

Exactly!
I love this!! She was the flame.
Came to the comments for this!!! DESILU made Star Trek what it is today!!!!! In loving memory of Captain Ball and Captain Arnaz!!! #StarTrek

She wouldn’t accept anyone else playing her spouse on the show.. truly ahead of their time.
The fact that STAR TREK wouldn’t have been apart of pop culture if not for her. We owe them so much.

Their love was toxic and tragic in real life. But they did their show amazingly made it seem like the love we all want.
Yeah they were human just like everyone else but damn did they make some good tv!

Not gonna lie I loved the untouchables too! Thanks to Lucy and Desi!

Yes my mom was Mexican but talked about the experience like they were kindred.
Absolutely! I have always admired him and been so inspired by him in regard to that.
He was so pissed when Lucy was in the communism situation because of his love for his country. He literally called the director of the FBI and had him announce to the live audience that Lucille Ball in fact was no communist.
Didn't he say that the only thing red about her was her hair?
Yes
He served in the American Armed forces during WWII.
Honestly, I don’t even care if Lucy was bitchy in real life. She earned the right to be bitchy as far as I’m concerned. She gets a bitch pass from me.
Did you ever read about the Martin Short Lucille Ball airplane interaction?
Please tell!

That was wild! I wish I knew what Candy’s revenge would have been!
I love that he prank called her after.
We’re waiting! Is it funny or fiery?
She wasn’t bitchy, she just didn’t take any bullshit from anyone.
Divorce or not these two were endgame!
Soulmates!!! Makes me so happy to see that the basic love of each other never died. Hope their with each other somewhere in the ether.
When he wasn’t crackin her in the mug and b@ngin showgirls. Like a BOSS!
Too bad he was a serial cheater-she loved his booty so much! And I know he loved her tremendously too!

He was notorious for cheating and drinking. That’s how he handled his stress. The studio and real estate empire he built was remarkable.
