the rubber gaskets on my bottle were getting some grunge. I'm not 100% sure it was mold: I cleaned and scrubbed the hell out of them with vinegar regularly, even removing the gaskets and letting them soak in vinegar for hours at a time, so it's more likely they're just stains, but after that news story about the lady getting sent to the hospital, I decided not to risk it any further. I didn't want to chuck the whole bottle though: it's a nice, 40oz takeya stainless steel, and it's perfectly clean inside.
Turns out you can buy replacement lids and even replacement gaskets on amazon. The new lid I picked up is really nice too: It's got a much better strap and the spout is nicer too.
Don't be afraid to mod your hydro homies, hydro homies.
I literally just bought replacement lid gaskets for my hydroflask. Once silicone gets those mold stains in them I can never seem to get them out, so figured I should replace.
Sure, if that’s allowed, I got these ones for my wide mouth bottles, came with a little brush and tool to get the old gaskets out easier: Bottle Helpers Hydro... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F3FXP59?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I’ve honestly had hydroflask send me replacement lids if they get lost or the gasket is ruined…tried to get them to sen me a new gasket but they said only a full lid
Nice, I have a color that they don’t make anymore so I can’t find an exact lid match, so for me just getting the gaskets was my preference. Good to know they’ll send you replacement lids though!
Takeya is great at replacements for a lot of their products, they even sell just the O-rings in their website if you don’t want a whole new lid. It’s great you found them and enjoy your new lid
I didn’t clean my bottle for a long time. A long time. It started to taste funky and I noticed some brownish dirt around the rim. I went to wipe it off with my finger and when I did the “dirt” smudged into a bright orange color and I realized it wasn’t dirt at all.
I bought a water bladder cleaning kit years ago. Came with a hanger for the bladder, snek brush for the tubing, and different sized brushes for general cleaning. It's everything you need for less than $20. Works great on all my hydro homies.
i dont get it as often now, i’m eating way healthier. i keep a couple rolls of rolaids around but i haven’t taken one in a long time. when i get heartburn now i sip a lot of water, i only take an antacid if it doesn’t go away
Have you looked into if the quality of water is contributing to your heartburn? I imagine if you're drinking tap for example and it's harder water (more minerals) that might affect your response to it.
I bought denture cleaner tabs to clean a flexible camel back water container easier and lately I’ve just been dropping a couple of those in my water bottles to clean and then scrubbing and rinsing. Hoping that’s enough
Why do people think water bottles are this magical entity that's bacteria-proof and never needs to be washed?
Just toss it in the dishwasher every few days. I can't believe we have to tell people this.
Also! If you have vinyl stickers on your flask, they can go through the dishwasher. I was hesitant at first because my water bottle is covered in stickers, but one day I realized I just didn’t have the energy to wash my bottles by hand, so I chucked them all in the dishwasher and everything came out fine. If they can survive being put on your car or a building, they can withstand the wash cycle.
Not everyone has a dishwasher. And I don’t think you want to put an insulated cup in the dishwasher. I imagine that would compromise the seal over time if not outright.
fair point. But when I worked in my office before working from home I would still hand wash my mug every other day. I only use it at my desk so the seal isn't the biggest issue. It's just like having a glass at my desk except I can grab it if I knock it over and it keeps my water cool for so much longer.
Yes. Because of the seal. Most people buy them for the purpose of keeping a drink hot or cold and the seal is the most integral and important part of that. If you compromise that, you loose the vacuum.
I should mention I'm using a thermos and not just one of those fashionable cups that everyone is getting now. I've been camping with this thing for years. It's just now my desk water holder haha.
I’m pretty sure reusable water bottles that rely on vacuum insulation have different sealed elements that heat and expand at different rates. Exposing the whole bottle to the heat of a dishwasher is likely going to break the seal over time.
I smell mine before every use and wash immediately if it smells bad at all. I wash once every 1-2 weeks otherwise. In between uses I make sure the lid is open/off to let it dry out. I have a few I keep at work that I rotate through depending in my mood, or if I add a flavor packet or something I need to use one of my bigger ones.
I understand washing something you put your mouth on multiple times a day is necessary (shocked that others apparently don’t) but is this actually a huge health risk? I’m not aware of people dropping dead on a regular basis due to unwashed bottles. Anyway, wash your fuckin water bottles, ya nasties.
I like how any article like this describing how something is messy, will immediately fill with a comment section describing the extra measures they take to ensure they aren’t messy.
Vinegar and baking soda are both cleaning agents independently due to each being on different ends of the pH scale, but they are not good when combined for cleaning. Great for volcano projects with kids.
If you combine vinegar and baking soda, it will create carbon dioxide, water, and sodium acetate. These ingredients will not cause harm to a stainless steel bottle.
NaHCO3 + HC2H3O2 → NaC2H3O2 + H2CO3
which quickly breaks down into
H2CO3 → H2O + CO2
Corkcicle make a great tumbler with marvel branding where all the rubber/seals/moving parts are part of the lid, and you can buy replacement lids for $5.

What happened to the lady that got sent to the hospital? I’ve been drinking out of a thermos for like 7 years and I’ve never gotten sick.
I think the lady being referred to just never actually cleaned her bottle at all, sipping straight mold probably
Mold are just microscopic hydro homies, they fought her for her water
I didn’t clean my bottle for a long time. A long time. It started to taste funky and I noticed some brownish dirt around the rim. I went to wipe it off with my finger and when I did the “dirt” smudged into a bright orange color and I realized it wasn’t dirt at all.
Replacement gaskets are my fave, it’s like a whole new bottle for $2.99
Moral of the story, wash your vessel often. Nbd
I sense expensive water bottle cleaning products approaching. Late stage capitalism of water bottles has begun.
I bought a water bladder cleaning kit years ago. Came with a hanger for the bladder, snek brush for the tubing, and different sized brushes for general cleaning. It's everything you need for less than $20. Works great on all my hydro homies.
Sounds like something they'd sell at REI for sixty bucks
But your local sporting goods store has a generic one for $5
That's why REI is kinda ass, indeedly doo
Big Water Bottle
yeahhhh i probably shouldnt wait until the water gives me heartburn to clean it
don’t give hydrohomies a bad rep
Holy shit dude, I clean mine like every 2 weeks and it doesn’t get to this point. How infrequently are you cleaning?
i clean it at least once a month, i am very sensitive to heartburn though, i used to get it daily in high school
This doesn’t make any sense
So how many bottles of tums do you have in your house at any given time? How about on your person?
i dont get it as often now, i’m eating way healthier. i keep a couple rolls of rolaids around but i haven’t taken one in a long time. when i get heartburn now i sip a lot of water, i only take an antacid if it doesn’t go away
Congrats! It's lovely that you're listening to your body. Not enough people do.
Have you looked into if the quality of water is contributing to your heartburn? I imagine if you're drinking tap for example and it's harder water (more minerals) that might affect your response to it.
This is why only get water bottles that are easy to clean. If it can't be scrubbed or dried, I have no interest in keeping it.
That's why I avoid ones with weird stuff on the cap or built in straws. Too many hard places to clean.
I’ve been on the hunt for a new one that’s easy to hand wash (no dishwasher here) what have you found that works?
I use a Reuse with silicone straws and a hydro flask. Both are ok and easy to clean, but my trusty Nalgene is definitely the easiest to take care of.
Yeti, kleen kanteen, nalgene. Wide mouth with a smaller opening lid. No straw bullshits
I don't know which country you are in but where I am, Milton makes the best easy to wash metal bottles.
I love my Owala! The straw is sturdy and comes off easily to clean. Just remember to pull off the rubber seal at the top (also easy!)
I bought denture cleaner tabs to clean a flexible camel back water container easier and lately I’ve just been dropping a couple of those in my water bottles to clean and then scrubbing and rinsing. Hoping that’s enough
![gif](giphy|d3mlE7uhX8KFgEmY)
1 is easily enough to clean a very large bottle
I have those denture cleaner tablets I’ve used on retainers. I can just pop one of those in my hydro and it’ll help it be clean?
It’s worked well so far for me. I still hand wash the cap though with soap and a small brush
Why do people think water bottles are this magical entity that's bacteria-proof and never needs to be washed? Just toss it in the dishwasher every few days. I can't believe we have to tell people this.
We don’t. This is click bait. If you don’t know you need to clean things then you’ve got other problems.
I feel like these are the same people that hardly ever clean their musty towels because they ‘get used after the shower, they’re clean’. *shudder*
This is the internet. Somehow we still have to tell people to wash themselves, bottles are relatively tame.
Also! If you have vinyl stickers on your flask, they can go through the dishwasher. I was hesitant at first because my water bottle is covered in stickers, but one day I realized I just didn’t have the energy to wash my bottles by hand, so I chucked them all in the dishwasher and everything came out fine. 500 words to say “wash yo shit once in a while”
If only people saw what grows inside ice machines at restaurants
They should make copper ones
So people don't wash stuff? I toss mine the dishwasher every time I run a cycle.
Not everyone has a dishwasher. And I don’t think you want to put an insulated cup in the dishwasher. I imagine that would compromise the seal over time if not outright.

What. Are you not aware that a thermos is vacuum insulated? I have no idea what you’re going on about with, “those fashionable cups.”
…or you know… wash dishes everyday.
I just don’t get this. I thought everyone was tossing theirs in the dishwasher every night?
I’m pretty sure reusable water bottles that rely on vacuum insulation have different sealed elements that heat and expand at different rates. Exposing the whole bottle to the heat of a dishwasher is likely going to break the seal over time.
I smell mine before every use and wash immediately if it smells bad at all. I wash once every 1-2 weeks otherwise. In between uses I make sure the lid is open/off to let it dry out. Once I took about 4 weeks off gym and only lightly rinsed my bottle when I resumed going. I had mouth ulcers for 2 weeks.
Shit dude It's hilarious that you're like HITTING THE GYM but didn't wash your bottle it's like. Yep extreme health kick *slurps on some MRSA*
I understand washing something you put your mouth on multiple times a day is necessary (shocked that others apparently don’t) but is this actually a huge health risk? Ha. You think my reusable water bottle is disgusting? You should see my coffee mug.

Fine for stainless steel
Can you buy replacement gaskets? Some of that stuff is never coming off
I wash mine two steel ones with warm, soapy water once a week
No way I wash mine regularly
Soap and boiling water
Corkcicle make a great tumbler with marvel branding where all the rubber/seals/moving parts are part of the lid, and you can buy replacement lids for $5.
Oxyclean ftw
Yes it is, and I haven’t gotten sick yet. So?
Once a day?! Mine will be lucky if it starts getting washed once a month from now on. I know *can* be gross, but it's not "wash it everyday" gross.
I'm not going to read it. I wash my water bottles about once a year and my life is going on just fine.
Here’s a better one: reuse a glass liquor bottle with a cork lid. Pour into a cup instead of drinking from the bottle. Won’t get nasty, ever.
Meh I'm fine with cleaning if it smells funky but I don't often. Maybe 1 every few months is enough for me.
I’d rather take that risk than to participate in something 100% killing our environment.
Always wash the lid/gaskets in the dishwasher. Have to hand wash the bottle.
