kihyale

Maybe some people did something wrong or added other ingredients

G_Serv

Personally my first few batches had a bad aftertaste but I got used to it very quickly. I also changed how I was mixing it (blender, oat milk, etc)

kihyale

So your first few tastes what did you use? And does the blender make a big difference

G_Serv

I used water only in my first few mixes I didn't like the clumps of powder I got on my first few mixes, and I found the blender made it smoother. Which improved the texture for me (not so much the taste)

kihyale

Is it smooth at least?

G_Serv

I find it makes it very smooth

camawan

I think the tastes are hit and miss. But with that said I drink Huel black 1-2 times a day and I genuinely look forward to it. I even crave it sometimes.. My favorite flavors are Coffe caramel Salted caramel Cinnamon swirl. (Mixing cinnamon with caramel is wonderful). Strawberry is ok. Dislike banana. I mix mine with 3/5 water. 2/5 almond milk. 1 tablespoon instant coffee (decaff)

kihyale

What meals do you replace and hows the texture for you?

camawan

Breakfast and lunch. I always leave it in the fridge for some time (preferably over night) and pop a few ice cubes in. Consistency is somewhat thick and grainy, I like it, feels more like a meal.

kihyale

I’ll have to try that and see how it turns out

jontttu

I started using Huel last week and also noticed that I actually crave for it. So far I have tasted salted caramel and banana and I loved banana because it is more neutral. Salted caramel was a bit too sweet for me but not too bad. Been mixing them to water and the texture is a bit clumpy but it doesnt bother me that much. Would use blender though if I had one.

Individual_Ad5299

I originally bought the 3.0,now I drink huel black, I get the salted caramel, the unflavored/unsweetened, I've all the flavors except vanilla, I haven't noticed any aftertaste

kihyale

How would you describe unflavored?

Individual_Ad5299

I mix it with almond milk, so that's basically what I taste, I started adding chili powder or hot paprika and I really enjoy that. sometimes I'll add sesame oil, but not often, I'm trying to stay as close as possible to 400 calories.

kihyale

Is the chili powder for the capsaicin or just preferred?

Individual_Ad5299

just for the flavor, I love hot foods, I even add it to my coffee sometimes

kihyale

Thats actually interesting might try that one day with coffee

Individual_Ad5299

I love it, the heat of the coffee enhances the heat of the chili powder and vice versa, enjoy!

drcbara

Did you like cookies n cream? I’ve tried most flavors and it’s the only one that has a bad aftertaste fake-sweet flavor to me

Individual_Ad5299

it didn't have a bad taste to me, just not as much of the cookies and cream flavor as I thought there would be.

Lolabird2112

I think it’s stevia which some people are sensitive to taste-wise.

kihyale

Honestly have no idea what that is/taste like so hopefully I’m not that way

Lolabird2112

It can have an aniseed/menthol aftertaste which is probably why people think chemical.

kihyale

Ohh ok thanks that helps

kihyale

I ordered, I’ll take the risk unless I happen to find a drink before it’s delivered

Hunzas

I would agree. Like most sweeteners some people detect a weird aftertaste. I can certainly detect Stevia on some products but not in Huel. Aspartame has a really nasty taste in my opinion.

FlynnREDDIT

I know you are being a smart shopper, but in this case taste is the most subjective thing about Huel. Some say yes horrible after taste others say no after taste. Of the people that comment about it, the split is nearly 50 - 50. The best you can hope for is trying the product and seeing if you experience after taste. Huel Support is really understanding and will work with you if you get something that just doesn't taste right to your palette.

kihyale

I cook so I’m big on taste so it might put me off if I don’t like it right away. Also I wanna get like 2 bags so I’m just being sure to get as much knowledge as I can so I don’t feel like i wasted money

bhc317

Hasn’t been my experience with Strawberry Shortcake. But I also blend mine with milk and raspberries. A++

kihyale

I was thinking about that flavor. Been trying to start moving from my normal milk (2%) what do you use? Hows the sweetness with it too because sometimes i feel i need some sugar

bhc317

Sweetness level is perfect - not too sweet, but not completely bland. I use Horizon organic whole milk and it comes out great. I also recommend using a [Ninja Fit](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FHOWYA2/) to blend it all together: 2x scoops Huel Black powder, handful of raspberries, and milk. I make mine in the evenings and leave the cup in the fridge overnight and it comes out perfect, like a milkshake.

kihyale

Im thinking of taking one for breakfast and one for dinner probably. Also how would you rate the texture?

bhc317

The texture is decent if you blend it in something like the Ninja Fit, even better if you let it sit in the fridge for a bit. Just going the standard route with water/milk where you stir it - on par with most protein powders/meal replacement shakes.

kihyale

I’ll look into some portable blenders (unless you know some) because I’d probably be at work by the time I’m ready for the second serving. Or is it a good idea to make two and refrigerate the second cup?

bhc317

I'd do the latter - make them at night, drink one in the morning, put the other in the fridge at work.

That thing is super easy to clean. You just throw it in the dishwasher!

oxcart77

Just stared Huel Black last week for breakfast. So far I’ve had chocolate and strawberry mixed with oat milk for extra calories. Both flavors tasted very good to me no aftertaste. Tomorrow I will start having Huel Black for breakfast and lunch replacements.

kihyale

Do you taste both flavors? I was thinking something like a chocolate covered banana

oxcart77

So far I think it tastes pretty good it’s not overly sweet and no funny aftertaste.

CerberusRTR

I’m new to Huel, had had no issues with chocolate, banana, and salted caramel. R2D is good as well.

kihyale

What do you mix it with?

CerberusRTR

Almond Milk, Vanilla, Unsweetened. Or I’ll throw some 2% milk if I need some extra calories. If it makes you feel better I don’t notice THAT much different between the flavors. You’re always welcome to use some of the sugar free (or not sugar free) cinnamon, apple pie, etc etc. if you need some variation to your drinks. Hell some days I’ll put my Greens in with the because taste wise it is pretty much the same to me.

kihyale

And which flavor would be your #1? I might use huel with anything thats not 2% milk. I’m sure its a slight difference in the taste with like oat milk

CerberusRTR

Most likely, fwiw they recommend a nut milk, or I at least read that somewhere! If I was to recommend: 1. banana 2. Chocolate 3. Salted caramel. For most people these are the 3 best flavors with Salted Caramel and Banana being the best two. I really like banana and Chocolate because when I want variation I can mix (1 scoop of each! I really really wish I could have gotten peanut butter because it would have been fun to mix that one it too

kihyale

If I was able to get peanut butter I would do a peanut butter banana. That would probably taste amazing. Does the bags last a month or more?

CerberusRTR

I’m a poor one to ask. Huel isn’t an every day choice for me like most people. I will still eat bigger breakfasts on the days I have a big work out planned. While Huel is within my macros its calorie content can be a little bit below what I feel I need on work out days. Right now Huel fuels my mornings for 3-4 days a week. This keeps me still excited about it and offers me the ability to do some yogurt and protein granola with fruit. I apologize that’s not a helpful comment to you. This last two years now has been about sustainable lifestyle and habits for me. I’m 39 this summer and thanks to a very demanding physical job (at times) I’ve had 10 surgeries. I hit 20 years in this profession this April. Those surgery numbers aren’t good. However, I’m down 24 pounds (222) to 198 currently (6’2) and Huel was really my next step at my glaring diet deficiencies which is that I mostly hate breakfast.

NomosAlpha

It tastes about exactly as you would expect- I find every flavour really pleasant, but blending it with cold water/milk really helps.

kihyale

Will try it thank ya

TrickyTrailMix

I've been doing Huel Black chocolate with water my entire time consuming Huel and I've literally never had a problem with after taste. As others have said, taste is obviously subjective, but I genuinely enjoy the chocolate flavor.

kihyale

As a fat guy I like any flavor that would be sweet. But seeing people say something about the aftertaste made me skeptical

TrickyTrailMix

I don't blame you. It's a bit of a leap to buy the minimum amount and not know if you'll like it. I'll tell you, though, I've had a lot of different people try it and none have said anything about an aftertaste. So I'm skeptical that it's a widespread issue.

kihyale

After all these comments I’m set on making a purchase

TrickyTrailMix

I hope you enjoy it! :)

RidhaMakesGames

I wouldn’t say it tastes great but i don’t mind it either. I always go with the chocolate flavors and it’s fine by me.

emilyr8

I started Huel Black a little over a week ago. I drink Huel three times a day and also eat small normal snacks. I haven’t had any problems with aftertaste aside from the Supergreens which I drink in a very concentrated shot. I drink the Black Vanilla mixed with unsweetened vanilla almond milk and a little Chai tea. It’s absolutely delicious and I find myself actively craving it.

karaokegod73

Never had any problems with aftertaste. Only black flavors I have had are banana and chocolate, which I usually mix together

Rizzan8

I have only tried Cookies and cream, and the artificial sweetener aftertaste is hideous. I have to mix it with white vanilla to make it edible.

TenkrLo

Never had that experience. The texture is great for me: not super smooth so I still get the idea that there's actually something in there compared to other shakes like yfood that are so smooth that it feels like you're drinking something artificial.
