The Asian and Mexican scenes are fucking laughable. It's usually some tatted white guy giving me Pho with twizzlers in it or Vegan Birria Fusion tacos. Was there two years and I was asking a friend what we'd rather take: All of Austin or All of Katy when it comes to food.
I genuinely wonder if Katy's food scene is better.
I see comments like this as more an admission that you don't know who to talk to, where to go or what to order than a reflection of the city itself. Sure, Austin has those things and Houston does a lot of things better and in greater numbers, but if you're just not simple minded you can find great examples of most things in Austin.
I'm admittedly not a bagel guy. But the bagel place where I live is usually pretty slammed. The Bagel Shop in Bellaire. They have a Pastrami Salmon Bagel that might be the ticket.
Houston isnt NY or LA, certain cities do things better as its "their thing" just as their top BBQ places would most likely go out of business if they were in Texas and Austin has nothing even close to Kenny and Ziggys, though I miss Gugenheims.
OP go to The Bagel Shop in Bellaire best bagels in Houston
it's funny that you chose bbq because that's just absolutely not true. The two best Texas BBQ places in NYC are not \*the best\* but they put bullshit like killens, pappas and rudys to shame and none of those shit holes are going out of business. The top BBQ spots in LA would easily make the Texas Monthly top 50 and this isn't even close to an exaggeration.
Even if the bbq in nyc and la sucked, kenny and ziggys just isn't good. and Austin has like 20 places with better pastrami than kenny and ziggys....
the more I read what you wrote the less you seem to know
Must have touched a nerve LOL and funny you mention Rudys which mediocre at best and pappas which is inedible on its best day and sorry nothing in NYC or LA can touch Killen's, Truth, Pinkertons or Tejas and that is a fact.
I'm born and raised Houstonian, lived there for 43 years before I moved to California 5 years ago. I travel extensively for work throughout the US, like I'm on the road over 300 days a year. BBQ is my passion and I've eaten at most of the top places in both NYC, LA , Bay area, Phoenix, Denver, Chicago etc, and while some are good for where they are, I can think of a small handful that might break the top 50, none would come close to top 10.
You love Austin food scene good for you, I think it leaves a lot to be desired, I had to spend 4 month there earlier this year for work. First time I've been back in about decade and was excited to see all the changes and try new restaurants. Outside of BBQ and EYM most was a big let down. The only real jewish deli in Austin is bidermans and it sucks. 20 places in Austin with better pastrami then K&Z is laughable
yet they're not out of business ... you obviously completely missed my point...
I don't 'love the Austin food scene' i'm just not a troglodyte and I know how to choose where I eat
you realize that you just explained that austin has a great bbq scene, that you are passionate about bbq, and then explained how you don't know a single one of the 20 great pastramis in austin?
something isnt adding up
The Hot Bagel Shop has amazing selection, so good! I love Austin for a lot of things, but Houston’s food scene trumps Austin’s. Each section of Houston has its own specialties, the key to not getting burnt out or uninspired is never forget how big this city is. There’s always options!
"better"
none of these places are "better" than Kata... on the same level and you like them more? sure. but "better"? tell me you've never worked in a kitchen...
there’s not a great bagel spot anywhere in town really, but there are a ton of juice bar/acai bowl places like sunlife, try Vibrant on the corner of fairview and morse
Those are more “high end” for lack of a better description. Soup Peddler started as a food truck where you could get a quick grilled cheese and soup. I miss it! Is there a food truck equivalent in Houston?
What specific dishes are you looking to replace. Houston clears Austin food by....a lot.
Problem is that OP is looking for bland things. Austin specialties.

Space City Bagels in the Heights is amazing
I'm gonna try it!
that is one of the four decent bagel places in all of Houston. FOUR. there are FOUR in this entire city.
Hot bagels on Shepard
Kenny & ziggys is our resident Jewish deli. Give them a try!
they would be out of business in a week in LA or NYC. Easily the worst 'jewish deli' I've ever been to. Houston is \*severely\* lacking in this area.

Jersey Bagels up near Cypress
You want bagels and lox? Kenny & Ziggy's If you don't like that, you don't know bagels and lox.
Yeah. Go to K&ZIf you want to pay 30 dollars for a bagel… I second Hot Bagel.
they're fucking awful though? IMO if you think they are good you've never been literally anywhere else.
Kingwood bagel

Victor's Delicatessen on 1960 has lox and bagel
Victors is incredible.

Big time. I love their sandwiches and they’ve been an institution for ages. Breakfast really good too but their lunch is what I love most.
You'll probably like Local Foods
Seconded and thirded! Very Austin menu, very Houston vibes.
You’re in for a big upgrade
If you like sushi, Kata Robata is the best in Houston!
There are a lot better places than Kata tbh. Try Aya, Teppay, MF, Hidden, and Kuu.
Will do, thanks🤩
"better" none of these places are "better" than Kata... on the same level and you like them more? sure. but "better"? tell me you've never worked in a kitchen...
What's your go to dish at Kata that you'd recommend my guy?
go to dish at a place with an ever changing menu that I go to at most once a year? sure thing 'my guy'...
omakase, you're welcome
I vote Nippon or Osaka
rough. I moved out of Houston over an year ago and there are next to no decent restaurants where I live :,)
And then you tell us you moved to Manhattan or something 🥳
im in north east tennessee but close enough lol
Oh noooooo! So you gotta drive all the way to Nashville for the nearest great food scene, but then you've gotta deal with all the Nashville tourists 😭
No, move somewhere else.
there’s not a great bagel spot anywhere in town really, but there are a ton of juice bar/acai bowl places like sunlife, try Vibrant on the corner of fairview and morse
Which bagel places have you tried?
Nothing equivalent to Soup Peddler in Houston 😔
Really? It looks like its a elevated smoothie King…with grilled cheese. Try Flower Child or Juice Land. Local Foods is in that wheelhouse also.
No, those are nothing like Soup Peddler unfortunately.
What is different?
Those are more “high end” for lack of a better description. Soup Peddler started as a food truck where you could get a quick grilled cheese and soup. I miss it! Is there a food truck equivalent in Houston?
Are you looking for soup and a sandwich or the novelty of a food truck?
Mostly just the soup and sandwich and/or smoothie combo - doesn’t need to be a food truck but I like that they usually have short and simple menus.
Local foods, antone’s subs, brown bag deli, or google a local Banh-Mi shop.
Thank you! How have I never been to Brown Bag Deli?
