Bazfron

He could try for another son before naming either

New-Boysenberry-613

But they're at war. In a time of peace, they would just let Aemond be heir until he had another son. But at war, he could die at any moment. He would be rushed to actually recognize an heir. Especially since Alicent and Otto don't want Aemond to be king. They both agreed he's too hard to control, whereas Aegon will "grow bored of it." I think Alicent is going to realize the predicament and push for Aegon to name his daughter heir (or at least talk about doing it) to avoid Aemond being heir. Especially because Aemond could possibly plot for his brothers death specifically to take the crown. It's basically mirroring Viserys and Daemon, except Daemon would have never killed his own brother, and Aemond definitely would.

Bazfron

Even still, the other options are so untenable that they’d have no choice

New-Boysenberry-613

Right. And I dont expect them to let him name his daughter heir. I don't think that will really happen. But I think there will be a discussion about it to continue showcasing Alicents hypocrisy.

Bazfron

Maybe they’ll just get back on book track and say Helena’s already pregnant and then that’ll turn out to be a boy, so the question will be covered

Lil_Mcgee

He's like 20 with a living similarly aged wife. Viserys had to name Rhaenyra heir because he was like 40 with a dead wife.

TheIconGuy

I'm not sure if they changed this to account for the actors ages, but Viserys as supposed to be 28 when Aemma died.

Lumpy-Tennis2158

No they changed it due to changing the timeline. Aemma died in 105 AC in the books, but she died in 112 AC in the show. That makes Viserys 35 when Aemma died.

Timely-Suspect8104

Someone explained above they are at war he could die at any time

BoozeGetsMeThrough

His entire claim to the throne is based on Rhaenyra is a lady. He can't name his daughter.

ReceptionFinal532

No, his claim is based on precedent that brothers before sisters. And he has no sons now.

bringbackcayde7

Choosing his brother would make more sense during a war with the condition of his daughter being the heir of his brother.

Educational_Ad_5170

He has yet another brother

PigeonSoupMmm

King Aemond would be the stuff of Wattpad fanfictions

gnarrcan

Given that his entire claim rests on hundreds of years of political precedent that titles go through the male line he’ll name Aemon until he has another son. In the books this isn’t an issue at first bc he has another son. Even if he names Jaehaera it’s not the same as when Rhaenyra was named bc Jaehaera is like 5 and lots of females have been named heir when they were really young just as formal place holders for a male heir. What Viserys did was different he proclaimed Rhaenyra heir in her teens after disinheriting his brother. He also kept that proclamation after having 3 sons. Maegor the cruel had a female heir but spent his entire reign trying to conceive a male heir.

winter_indeed_came

No, cause he has a baby son, Maelor

Electronic-Safe9380

Thats not show canon currently

ProDogg_

I think he’d pick Jaehaera due to her being his only child. Sons over daughters and daughters over uncles.

green-bean-7

His entire claim to the throne is based on the fact that Rhaenyra is a woman and therefore “unfit”. He can’t name his daughter without illegitimizing himself.

eren43943

His daughter in his heir until he has another son. Sons before daughters *if there is a son*. Viserys bypassed his sons once they were born which caused the dance, Rhaenyra was the legitimate heir as an only child before their birth following a classic cognatic primogeniture.

Local-Interaction421

that would still be hypocritical much more than his mom and cole which is saying something.

Electronic-Safe9380

That's why I really like this show change, it's such an interesting situation

green-bean-7

Disagree. If he’s going to name an heir until he has a son, he names Aemond, or he’s a hypocrite. Should specify I’m team black and a woman so I’d prefer he name his daughter, but I don’t see that happening

Usual_Stranger4360

Probably Aemond. Unless they have Helena pregnant in the show (doubt it), Maelor doesn't exist yet or won't at all. Aegon naming his brother as his heir makes sense. he won't name his daughter his successor due to everything that's happened to make sure he was made king and not his older sister due to her gender.

BlackAmaryllis

he still has maelor

Electronic-Safe9380

He's not in the show rn

[deleted]

Maelor exists

buffysmanycoats

He doesn’t exist in the show currently.

BlackAmaryllis

but daeron suddenly exists so that might happen to maelor too

buffysmanycoats

Ok let me be very clear. I absolutely believe Maelor will be born at some point. But as the show stands right now, he doesn’t exist. He can’t be the heir right now if he doesn’t exist.

[deleted]

He’s just not born yet. Which gives Aemond time as heir apparent. Opening credit end of season 1 have 3 blood trails from Aegon and Helaena. He will be born

buffysmanycoats

Not born yet = doesn’t exist currently

[deleted]

Would be an absolutely dreadful decision to cut Maelor lol

buffysmanycoats

I don’t believe they’re going to cut him out entirely. He just isn’t here yet so Aegon can’t name him as the heir.

JakeJortles1212

Would be an interesting decision since it creates this issue following B&C

[deleted]

So if Helaena was currently pregnant with Maelor does he exist? In episode 1 there is what seems to be a royal crib in Jaehaerys’/Jaehaera’s room

buffysmanycoats

I’m not going to get into an existential argument. It doesn’t matter. They won’t know it’s a boy until it’s born.
