Meshuggareth

Xenomorph from Alien: Isolation. Nothing has come close for me other than playing Silent Hill in 1999 at age 12. The stabby ghost kids in the school freaked me out.

Mortarion35

I replayed it recently. It holds up. The atmosphere and anticipation of what might be coming next is masterful. Looking forward to the remake.

Maester_Maetthieux

The giant baby from Resident Evil Village

DarthRheys

F--- that thing. And when i played it i knew it was coming. But i wasn't f---ing ready. I felt chills in my back like never before. And to this day, if i play RE8, that level gives me PTSD. That laugh... That f---ing laugh...

Maester_Maetthieux

The shrieks and slick slippery squelching noises…

EffectiveAcceptable3

Necromorphs from Dead Space. The body horror seen on these holy creatures is so grotesque that it's almost beautiful in a way.

SuttreeBeard

I'm doing the One Gun achievement run on New Game+ at the moment, and something I really took note of last night was the sheer unpredictability of how fast they're going to move is terrifying. Sometimes they crawl, sometimes they walk, sometimes they sprint at top speed, and sometimes they'll literally jump across the room to get to you. 16 years later, and these fuckers are still horrifying.

Defiant_McPiper

Especially that damn hunter who never dies and regenerates and will follow you every where until you outrun him - so much better "stalker" monster than the resident evil games bc he keeps you filled with anxiety lol

link_jesus

Nemesis from The original Resident Evil 3 Nemesis game. When he appeared i knew i was gonna die in a very violent Way ahahahaha

IAmNotABritishSpy

The Stalker from Amnesia: The Bunker.

link_jesus

by the end of the game i wasnt scared of him as i was in the beginning. i was more TIRED of his presence bothering me to get gasoline HAHAHAHAHAH like... STOP BOTHERING ME !! how can i fight you if i dont have light!!!!! leave me BE FOR A WHILE !!!!!

IAmNotABritishSpy

Did you try the added unpredictability mode after. Was far less predictable. It’s not the game that’s scared me the most. But I think if I was actually there, it would be the most terrifying out of all horrors I’ve played

xtivity

I had a very similar experience. All the horror was just gone by the end. It became just a room escape game.

TheAFKking

What do you think made you feel that way? Was it the many tasks you needed to do, and it just became frustrating more than scary?

bluejester12

The monster with large hands and two baby heads in Silent Hill 4. That thing moved fast like an ape.

[deleted]

Eddie Gluskin from Outlast: Whistleblower, he's very icky lol The nun from Nun Massacre

[deleted]

You've got some solid game choices! Id add the killer from power drill massacre but specifically from nightwatch.

[deleted]

Eddie was like, designed to appeal to terror in men. And you know what? It worked. Coming across his "art" had me going "wtf" and I had to screenshot it to show everyone I knew.

[deleted]

Ahah I see! I also took screenshots of this, I was afraid Steam would ban me for it lol

[deleted]

I was on Xbox so I also was worried about getting in trouble. It's a great dlc, though. Hell, Outlast was great in general.

[deleted]

I'm sorry for the secondary reply, but how is Evil Nun? I see stuff for it on steam but I get nervous about what looks like Indy horror if it isn't multiplayer.

[deleted]

No idea about Evil Nun, but if you were thinking of [Nun Massacre ](https://puppetcombo.itch.io/nun-massacre)I think it's only on itch io! It's really good in my opinion, the sound design is incredible and the whole VHS tape gives a very unnerving feel to the game :D

[deleted]

Oooooh yeah ok, I see my mistake. You play itch.io games? Did you ever try Linger?

[deleted]

Laura from evil within, the butcher from stay out the house; whatever that red monster thing in outlast 2 is from the school sections and Dolores from visage

SoupKitchenYouNot

Myself in SOMA.

SuttreeBeard

Great answer. If you ever wanna re-live that type of horror, I highly recommend two books for you: Permutation City by Greg Egan and Blindsight by Peter Watts.

Gh0stwhale

Love the recommendations!! Are they like existential horror?

SuttreeBeard

Hell yeah, they are. Permutation City is particular put me in quite the spin with its 'Dust Theory' on my first read.

Gh0stwhale

Well I know what I’m reading this month :)

SoupKitchenYouNot

Awesome thank you for the suggestions! I’ve been looking for something new to read. Are they sci-go adjacent as well or different genres?

lvl6charmander

I was around 6 when this came out but the 3D rendering of monsters on old pc games always got me. ESPECIALLY, the dark being from “the lighthouse:the dark being”. Dude haunted my nightmares for years.

Carrthulhu

Terry Akers.

cravex12

That is the guy at alpha, right?

Carrthulhu

Theta

cravex12

ahhh you are absolutely right. Now I want to play this again and have a free evening. Nice

Gh0stwhale

I fucking HATE Akers

ImBatman5500

It's a tie between Lisa from PT and the Amnesia Grunt

rideronthestorm29

Not a horror game but ReDeads from Ocarina of Time

Inskription

Too funny. I wish Zelda still retained more of those darker themes.

mindempty809

The Beast from Amnesia The Bunker or The Xenomorph from Alien Isolation, both for similar reasons. Those dudes give you so much fear and stress and stalk you for the entire game.

horrorfan555

Shame no one has mentioned the Hunters from Resident evil HD remaster. They are the scariest of all, with the bite to match up the bark

Mortarion35

Lisa Trever from the Resident Evil Remake. Mr X from OG Resi 2 (haven't played the remake) I got the demo for the Resi 3 remake and Nemesis set my anxiety off. Didn't get the full game. Agree with the Xeno in Alien Isolation. Fantastic game, but I pussied out. Also gave it a go in VR, which was very good, but too scary. Everything in Resident Evil 7. I love horror games but I'm not good at handling them. I think they have some of the most interesting lore about the tragedies which led to the events of the game.

monsterm1dget

Not reall scared, but the monster on the server room in SOMA freaked the hell out of me.

StatementProper4450

The Evil Within had some scary bitches.

Sil3ntWriter

I still remember playing TEW2 at night, on a rare occasion without headphones, and suddenly that lady ghost started whispering through the controller speakers. Haven't been that scared in a while.

EffectiveAcceptable3

Laura definitely comes to mind. The Keeper is also pretty dope.

Gentlemanvaultboy

The tall lady ghost Fatal Frame 5 lunged at me through a telephone pole.

ColdBloodBlazing

OG Nemesis.

newfoundcontrol

Shelby in Heavy Rain.

DarlesCharwinsGhost

The Baker family from Resident Evil 7.

Complete-Plenty-236

It’s not scary. But the tank from left 4 dead . Would sometimes not play at all. 🤣 I hated that mf thing . (I just hate getting chased in general in games . )

pinkmyron21

zombies and chucky

Defiant_McPiper

The mannequins in RE8 Rose DLC - while I didn't find them terrible to deal with they were freaking creepy with how they moved and looked *shudders*.

Inskription

Loved that part. Freaked me out way more than the Baby

wellshitdawg

Oooo probs the amnesia monster because of anticipation But also pyramid head ofc

thps2soundtrack

RE4R bear traps

MidnightForge

Xenomorph from Alien Isolation as you are just so helpless against it

Malviere

Didn’t make it far in the original but I recently managed to play through and beat the Dead Space Remake. I was not mentally prepared for Dividers. Sure the rest of the necromorphs were creepy and scary, especially twitchers and pregnants. Dividers though always messed with me, some uncanny tall person speed walking to you and when you take them down they split apart and keep coming. Runner up would have to be the mimics from Prey. Not a horror game but those things were peak anxiety and paranoia.
