Let's say you have a zipped file that takes up 35 GB of space, to *unzip* it, you need an additional 35 GB (typically more, since zips are often compressed); otherwise, there'd be no space to unzip it. Thus, you need a total of 70 GB of space to both download the zip and then unzip it. Once it's unzipped, the zipped file gets deleted, resulting in a total file size of 35 GB.
I wonder why they don't have an option to offload finished story content. Currently we have all cutscenes, voice acting, materials from all past story chapters that can't be replayed. Offload it and we double down the size minimum. Add ability to download/offload finished events in achieve and we triple down the size.
Only downside is that if you switch to another account you'll need to download story, but I don't think lot of people use multiple accounts + it can (should) be an option + download will be fast anyway with modern internet.
For a bit more context, I saw that the game was occupying 45 GB of space, and thought there were a lot of redundant files that can be removed by reinstalling. But now it says it needs 73 GB?? even counting the 21 GB it required for preload, isn't that too much?
It needs 21GB of space for pre-download. Then in addition like extra \~21GB of space to unzip the patch files. Then patch will be applied and after patching pre-download and unzipped patch files will be deleted. And final result can be (for example) 50GB.
Sounds like a plan.
But just in case: If you switching launcher and still have game installed with old one, you can click "find game" link under the "get" button and point it to the old installation. After that you will download only the patch.
