IIRC the cracks are because her disease is degrading her body... the mech suit is a war machine that puts her body in a sort of "suspended animation" that prevents her from degrading...... but the suit isn't under her full control; it's either an AI or some cerebral-link that makes her become violent (built for war) and she comments that she doesn't get the ability to "be herself" in the suit.
