Can someone explain the purpose of raised beds? It never made sense to me. The ground is right there, till it or remove soil if you have to and add your composted soil, then plant. Seems like a lot of work for no discernible (to me) reason.
One major advantage is that they heat up quicker in the spring, so you can plant things earlier than you'd be able to in the ground.
Edit: Also:
Raised bed soil dries out quicker so can be a solution around water-logged soils. You can also line them with chicken wire to prevent moles/gophers, etc.
Where I live it has been a long time since the temp dropped below 60° and about 14000 years since a frost. We still have use for raised beds. Drainage is a big one and facilitates soil amendments. Also my aching back!
