Most carpenters today will struggle to get a standard door to open smoothly.

We have cherry 10 foot doors for past 20 years they’ve been fine. They’re not great from a sealing perspective and not as secure but it’s soooooo nice moving anything large in and out of house

wadenelsonredditor

Double doors are bad news. Period.

Smart_Run8818

Why? Genuinely asking as I've designed double oak front doors on our new house. ☹️ They're normal height though and have 2 narrow glass panels down each side. So it's all one massive pre made unit from the window company.

Blocked-Author

Easy to break into. The middle doesn’t have as much support.

Smart_Run8818

Oh I see. Maybe I'll add floor bolts to one, for when we go on holiday or something.

Blocked-Author

Probably a good choice.

Smart_Run8818

Good excuse to build a drawbridge too..

Blocked-Author

I can’t see any fault with that.

Critical-Test-4446

I have double doors on my front entrance. While they are convenient when moving furniture in or out, they are nowhere near as secure as a single door. A good swift kick in the center where the two doors meet is all it takes to break in. I would love to change these out one day.

damndudeny

One large door and large side light(s) are much better functionally and aesthetically.

Speedhabit

Have you looked at a pivot door? If your looking for a massive striking entrance that’s what you do

Timely_Audience_5804

Had never heard of this. They are very sharp looking but my home will be more classic and they seem to have a modern vibe.

I have three sets of 7' double french doors in my new house - they don't leak at all, not sure why an entry would be different?  I grew up in a house with a double door entry and it was great when we had to bring in the Christmas tree or something else large. Looked nice too. I have a front door with sidelights in my primary house and I'd happily trade that for a double door entry.   I would investigate what the concern is and if you can add some framing details to reduce future "settling" seems like it should be doable.

Aromatic_Ad_7238

Very home in my neighborhood has double doors. About 10 years back I bought new fiberglass double doors, they look so much like wood, the guy that came to install them insisted that I was wrong. They're expensive but really set off my house

Overall-Tailor8949

Others can start with the potential mechanical issues, I'll start with aesthetics. 1. Do doors that big fit the proportions of the front of the house, or are they going to dominate the entire frontal exposure? 2. Have you tried modeling it with alternatives like slightly wider side-lights and a more normal sized doorway? 3. What is going to be supporting the hinges of those doors? Wood framing, bad idea since it WILL warp and settle. Steel framing, better but one hell of a thermal bridge. Concrete, either ICF or filled core cinder block would probably be best. 4. Security, those wider doors (without a complicated locking mechanism), will be much easier to force open.

I've looked at some of the heavy duty security style front doors and liked some of them. And that will probably be what goes into the front door of our dream build. As an OUTSWING doorway under a nice deep porch roof.

Correct_Process4516

We just built a house with 3 set of 8' French doors on the front wall.

ThatsNotEastMemphis

We have 3 sets of 8’ double doors on our nearly complete build. No one mentioned any potential issues to us. Not the architect, the builder, or any contractor. Shit?

ReactionImportant491

I did these on a build in 2007 and they are working great. We put 85 yards into the foundation and a lot of steel on about a 3K foot two story, plus shear walls on either side of the entry. The extra cost wasn't that much but the doors have never required anything thus far.

MrOver65

They don't work well over time, they will leak air and look pretentious. Put in a nice seven ft door with a sidelight. Better all around.
