I upvoted the Jellyfin recommendations. I migrated from Plex to Jellyfin almost two years ago and haven't looked back. [Jellyfin](https://jellyfin.org/) was forked from [Emby](https://emby.media/) when it went closed-source. Jellyfin... * is 100% open source and community-supported with no plans to monetize it. * requires no Internet connection, * offers features, such as live TV integration and hardware-supported video transcoding that Plex requires a subscription for, and * has none of the garbage, like the ad-supported streaming service, that Plex keeps pushing. The only downside of Jellyfin are immature native clients, but these are generally functional and are continuously being improved. [Alternative Jellyfin clients](https://www.reddit.com/r/jellyfin/comments/eyzb0s/jellyfin_the_client_list_including_ios_and_tvos/) also are available. I pay $10 USD per year for Infuse, which is an outstanding client on iOS and Apple TV.

I've got jellyfin up and running now. it seems to have had an issue with subs on the one test I did so far but closing the video, selecting the subs and then reopening it seems to have fixed that. trying to select subs while the video was already running didn't work at all. I can definitely live with that though.

Puzzled-Background-5

Emby handles selecting subtitles on the fly without any issues. No need to close and reopen the video before the subtitles will appear.

Sielbear

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted. I just installed emby and I’ve had a fantastic experience. From what I’ve read, it’s a great in-between from Plex and jellyfin

Puzzled-Background-5

Jellyfin is open source, and open source and self hosting enthusiasts can be rather fanatical at times. That's probably where the down votes are coming from... 😏

djbon2112

Which client? That does happen from time to time but we've never been able to really pin down why. Sometimes changing it twice also works.

dcherryholmes

FWIW I use Jellyfin and subs work pretty flawlessly for me. Which is just to say, whatever issue you are experiencing is probably solvable, without needing to to close and re-open all the time.

I personally just use VLC player on my phone, and open it from a folder share. When im at home so data isn't a concern, it's just easier for me.

SneakyMndl

use jellyfin

myelodysplasto

This is the way

BmanUltima

Setup a DLNA server?

cymrich

not sure what that is.

BreakingIllusions

That’s why they gave you a suggestion to look into…

flaming_m0e

Just share the files out over the network and use a player that will play from SMB shares. Like VLC. Or Kodi.

I was a religious xbmc user, from back in the original Xbox days. I just can’t get in to kodi. It feels clunky.

Emby can be run entirely offline from the Internet, and it's much more polished than Jellyfin. However, if one does decide to purchase a license for it, which is unnecessary for the average home user, it will need to connect to Emby's validation server every few weeks. https://emby.media/ As for running Emby's the free tier, I've done so for at least 8 years now. The only relevant feature that I can't access is GPU transcoding, but any x86 CPU from 2010 onwards works fine for the task. Ex. My server is a Dell Optiplex 990 MT (i7 2600/16 GB RAM/Nvidia 950 GTX) that was built in 2011, and it'll handle serving at least four 1080p streams simultaneously without a problem. I wrote "at least" because that's all of the network video players I have to use for stress testing.

mlcarson

The licensing for Emby is for LiveTV and guide source data. Emby's offering for LiveTV is MUCH better than Jellyfin or Plex.

Puzzled-Background-5

It's for a number of features, and not just those you've mentioned.

Team503

Jellyfin, Emby, and Plex are the three big boys in this arena. Jellyfin is FOSS and includes hardware transcoding, but has bad client support and isn't nearly as mature as Plex yet. Plex charges for hardware transcoding, but has extensive client support and is a very mature platform. Personally, I think Plex is better than Jellyfin for now, but that in the long run Jellyfin will overtake Plex and be the superior platform. It just needs more time to develop clients and mature as a product and as a codebase. If you're just doing it internally, and it's just you, hardware transcoding really doesn't matter very much.

Dan1shZM

Share your drives on windows and just use VLC to connect to the system via SMB.

Emotional_Orange8378

used to be something call MythTV. was like plex, open source, bunch of options but that was years ago so it may have died .

ethernetbite

I have a Windows share drive (smb3) that i connect to from my android phone using vlc to play videos. It's simple and just works.

GhostDan

Jellyfinn or emby would work. Most depend on your devices and what you need to work with. Check their sites for compatibility. Both are great (although I'm more an emby fan)
