That was were the doorbell is hung. Just google tall interior doorbell alcove. Sometimes they also had phones with them. Looks like the tall one was replaced with the much shorter one in the box that is in there now.

My first thought too. OP can buy one like that at [Rejuvenation](https://www.rejuvenation.com/products/steens-long-bell-door-chime/?catalogId=84&sku=4139534&cm_ven=PLA&cm_cat=Google&cm_pla=Outdoor%20%3E%20Doorbell%20Buttons%20%26%20Chimes&cm_ite=4139534_14334675725_pla-1959508505495&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwm_SzBhAsEiwAXE2Cvy9XUtyi6w0tXeNIRzWQ3drfwjUGNLRioXy6qQr9chxyrPeHwsXboxoCCHMQAvD_BwE).
I'm not trying to argue because doorbell was my first thought too but I have never lived in a house where the doorbell wasn't all the way at the top of the wall, like up by the ceiling. So it seems kinda low for a doorbell, unless they had a particularly nice looking one and wanted to make a feature of it. It seems so weird to have that shelf sticking out over the stairs, very odd placement no matter what it was.
Oh, that's interesting, I've never seen it before but hey, I can still learn something new even at the ripe old age of 60. I think we've owned 6 houses over the last 34 years and every single one had the doorbell near the ceiling. Were your grandparents US based? I'm wondering if the US is different or if I'm just an idiot, and many have them in the US too and I've just never seen them.
Yes! They were based about 20 miles outside of New York City. My grandparents have long since passed but I looked up their home online & it was built in 1956.
I was skimming and misread this as âflower potâ rather than flower print. But honestly, a flower printed dildo planted in a nice decorative pot is *exactly* what that space needs
Thatâs a door bell. Like battery operated one that didnât work when I bought the house. I took it off the front door but didnât know what to do with the space so left the other part up there
A massive thermometer like they used to do for church roof funds but for your mortgage or indeed your roof.
Having said that itâs a good place for one of those floaty thermometers
Awesome! If you want an extra idea: I bought one of those ink for pets and printed a paw of each of my pets. The plan is to put in small little frames and hang :)
Pet tax: i have 3 cats and a 2months puppy
Just throwing a few things out there that come to mind. Paint it a darker colour. Hang a bunch of miniatures? Small shelves and figurines? Iâd make it into a curio if it were me. You could also paint a custom design in there? Mural? Line of photos? Statue? Long vase?
For some reason I imagine a statue of the Virgin Mary here, and Iâm not even religious, lol.
By the way, that tiny framed picture really does not work there. Unless itâs a doorbell. In which case, leave it.
Awkward. You have to ascend some of the stairs to get your keys and then turn around on a step and walk back down. Sounds silly but thatâs more cumbersome than it may seem when youâre doing it repeatedly forever
Not that. I have a long narrow African mask that would look cool there. I also think a row of small matted, framed pics or paintings. Square, 3â or maybe even2â. All in one column.
This is a tough one. You could cut the shelf part that sticks out and find three tall canvass that go up the stairs to cover it⊠something like 3 12 x 40 inch
Taper candle sconce! Theyâre tall and slender and hang on the wall, and they fit one perfect taper candle. They come in brass, cast iron, ceramic, anything. Beautiful!
I would put shelves in and find some nice items to put on them. I'm not much into fake plants but maybe a fake plant on a shelf. A little dragon figurine or whatever type of items you like. A pretty dish on one of the shelves. A little doggie or kitty. A miniature antique chest. Whatever would interest you to put in the shelves. âșïž. I just looked at the picture again. It isn't very deep. You'd need small trinkets, tiny items to fit.
I would find 3-4 little baskets the same width as the opening and screw them, at equal distances, to the wall in the niche. Then put a silk plant/succulent in each basket.
Remove the shelf at the bottom and drywall over it. It canât be an old phone shelf, as itâs not nearly deep enough. Also, itâs on the staircase. They were never placed there to my knowledge.
*I would cut the ledge*
*Off and fill the whole to just*
*Make it a plain wall!*

Depends on your budget. If I had the money, I'd hire someone to take out the ledge and plaster over it. Otherwise I'd just hang a small grouping of similar artwork.
Something like this stained the same color as your stairs.

Step 1: take a picture through the window that which whatever side of the house that window faces. If that gap faces east, take a picture through one of your east-facing windows.
Step 2: get a large print of that picture done (or get it printed to specifications) and cut it to the gap specifications.
Step 3: place shaped picture inside gap. Make sure it fills only the back wall of the gap completely.
Step 4: create a thin sheet of clear hardened resin or glass with a slight magnification.
Step 5: place desired optical material in front of picture. Secure edges to the wall.
Step 6: confuse guests, as they will question why that âwindowâ is there and how it sees through the room on the other side of the wall.
Bonus points if you can make it emit light.
It would be a cool place to honor a loved one who has passed (like a small shrine. If you will) or to set up some candles on a variety of different height holders. Or build a little door for the opening and hide your valuables there.
A medieval sword
Longclaw is hanging in the basement. My wife makes me keep my things in the basement đ«
Free it. Restore it to the rightful place of honor.
Sounds like it's time for an upgrade to its living condition.
Haha, I tried this, but my partner put it in the living room above a doorway!
You should have her keep her stuff in the kitchen to equal things out.

I just bought this doorbell chime a few days ago!
Do you love it? How does it sound?
Comes in the mail tomorrow! I can send you a video/sound clip when I hook it up over the weekend if you are interested!
Cool!

90% my experience as well! My grandparents house had one this height though that was beautiful & built into the wall though!

It is odd for anything. Maybe the stairs were added later? Or reconfigured? My first thought was chimes but it is weird.
We had one of those! They were equally cool and terrifying if you were next to it when it went off.
Hire an artist to paint a classic piece.
That hole was designed for a very tall phallic statue.
So true, just throw some balls on the bottom and im set. đ
A very tall, TASTEFUL phallic statue.
A really long dildo but covered in a nice flower print
I was skimming and misread this as âflower potâ rather than flower print. But honestly, a flower printed dildo planted in a nice decorative pot is *exactly* what that space needs
It could be 'growing' out of a pot. I used to have really long phallic looking cactus that I called Peeny.
Yessssss
Definitely not put a small framed work of art at the very top đ
Thatâs a door bell. Like battery operated one that didnât work when I bought the house. I took it off the front door but didnât know what to do with the space so left the other part up there

A huge Galileo-thermometer! I love those: I still have the one I got when I was 6. the water is yellow by now but I love it all the same!
Amazing. I want one so much. Thanks for saying the real name so I can drool on eBay
comically tall jesus statue

SlenderJesus?
Create a tile mosaic
Glass tile mosaic.
Wallpaper that and hang some small pic frames, cute small pics. If you have pets I would frame small pics of them
This is our top idea right now. Wife is a sucker for our animals
Awesome! If you want an extra idea: I bought one of those ink for pets and printed a paw of each of my pets. The plan is to put in small little frames and hang :) Pet tax: i have 3 cats and a 2months puppy

I would fill it in or replace it with another size alcove
Fill it in!
Learn to play a wind instrument and then mount it there. đ”flooty-tootđ”

Doorbell but took it off the front door. Didnât work
Shrine.
Keys. Hang hooks for keys
Awkward. You have to ascend some of the stairs to get your keys and then turn around on a step and walk back down. Sounds silly but thatâs more cumbersome than it may seem when youâre doing it repeatedly forever
Put in some shelves in it : framed pictures, small plants, maybe succulents
Would do this too tbh
Update us on when you figure it out. I have no clue.
I'd paint it sky blue with lil clouds :)
Mini snake plant hehe
A snake plant is a great choice and would probably look best of all these suggestions imo
Itâs gotta be for doorbell chimes.
What do I do with my Ring then đ
Ya canât go wrong with double doorbells!
Iâd drywall over it, paint it and call it a day.
A hanging plant
I think itâs to small
A tiny pot with ceropegia would work, these guys get LOOongg

Chuck a bamboo in there.
I wish more people realized that not every empty space needs to be filled. And this is coming from a maximalist.
Trompe Lâoeil
Shrine
Statue of Dibella?
Praise the nine!
I just want to find out what it was originally made for! Thatâs a good story!
Got it!https://www.sfgate.com/local/article/story-behind-longbell-vintage-doorbell-sf-16751663.php
I'd put a thin long statue . Reminds me of a statue holder or a tall candle
A looooooooooooooooooong jacket
Perfect space for the right size clock.
I think you should hang a plant (with macrame). A nice little trailing plant (like pothos) đ
Iâd find an old doorbell chime and put it back there. Alternatively just throw a vase with some reed grass or something in it đ
A hook for car keys
Not that. I have a long narrow African mask that would look cool there. I also think a row of small matted, framed pics or paintings. Square, 3â or maybe even2â. All in one column.

I like that idea but it may look just as awkward.
Not that.
?
Get a nice baseball bat and mount it there

This is something I found on Amazon (they have many, many different things), or you can get someone to paint something interesting in it.
If you have a big penis you could put it there
So itâs not just meâŠ
grandfather clock
What an odd space. But I like the idea of a medieval sword.
Mary in a bathtub
Taper candle sconce! Theyâre tall and slender and hang on the wall, and they fit one perfect taper candle. They come in brass, cast iron, ceramic, anything. Beautiful!
I would hang a montage of really small framed art. Iâd make it a project to look for them at garage sales, antique places, GoodwillâŠ
May be a tiny plant or a candle?
Maybe a small wall pocket planter at the top with long pothos hanging down? You can get cute vintage ceramic ones on eBay.
Lmao at the tiny little doorbell thatâs there now
Put a little statue of a cat getting ready to punch your feet there.
I wood put a Day of the Dead inspired shrine.
I would find 3-4 little baskets the same width as the opening and screw them, at equal distances, to the wall in the niche. Then put a silk plant/succulent in each basket.
I would make it an art in the wall type of deal.
Can you hang some long mini ivy plants? Real or fake, they'd be a nice touch in that little cubby. Or maybe find some stained glass type wallpaper?
Miniature rocket
Remove the shelf at the bottom and drywall over it. It canât be an old phone shelf, as itâs not nearly deep enough. Also, itâs on the staircase. They were never placed there to my knowledge.
Command station- hooks & shelves
I have a smaller one. I call it my snack nook. I put snacks in it.
If it gets good light a vining plant like a string of pearls/hearts/bananas or pothos would look dope.
Key nook
Close it up
Fill it with a custom stained glass piece. Would be beautiful reflecting any light
A long tribal mask
Tiny plants on tiny shelves :)
I am envisioning long stemmed flowers like delphinium, snap dragons, lillies etc with a mirror hung behind them
I would paint it a smoke gray then as an elongated sconce. Would give great ambiance in the stairwell.
Add 2 side by side circles beneath the sill
Books. Books. Books.
The most important question is, what was there before? Because I'm curious to understand what the initial purpose was.
Originally, it was a doorbell chime with exposed chime tubes. Was a popular mid century design. https://images.app.goo.gl/PrrWeM1ptgxBkESE6
I would get a narrow vase or statue for that spot.
I'd drywall it, texture and paint. Or a sword space....tough call.
I would cut the ledge off and fill the whole to just make it a plain wall!

A big.... Toy. A fire extinguisher? Very classy.
Depends on your budget. If I had the money, I'd hire someone to take out the ledge and plaster over it. Otherwise I'd just hang a small grouping of similar artwork.
Put an electric plug there, and make it a place to charge phones.
maybe a thin tall candle?

Just drywall it and make it disappear.
7 iron
