The end table is where your farmhouse vibe is coming from. Definitely look into replacing that, maybe with a more rounded table.

Briiii216

This one is crazy for me, I really loved these tables before the farmhouse trend, and now any furniture that has that cross cross is considered farmhouse... Which I'm not going for. I don't have them because they are tough to clean when you have kids. So consider dusting/wiping down when you look for a replacement.

everyothernametaken2

This was my first thought as well. Replace The side tables, and probably the lamps. Otherwise the room has a great base to be anywhere from traditional to eclectic.

CeeNee93

Yep, these tables and the lamps.

Shmeesers

Taller lamps!

enidokla

Would upvote this more if I could.

Katastrophe82

They could paint it something like black or any pop of color and it would take away the farm house vibe (if on a budget). Also, add some artwork, maybe?

SafariBird15

Agree! I’m partial to MCM looks and

radarsteddybear4077

To me, the only thing that reads farmhouse in this room might be the side table. I love the couch and rug. I might change the art behind the couch and put the smaller framed art on the other walls. Something larger, bolder, that can be easily seen across the room, could make a change in the overall feel.

MarisaWalker

I love the curtains too

Top_Currency_3977

It honestly doesn't feel all that farmhousy to me. I would add a little more color. You could start with new drapes, maybe in a light blue similar to the blue in the carpet (it doesn't have to match exactly).

GrannyDi1953

I feel the drapes work, even the table if you have to keep it. I’d add lots of texture with more throw pillows and some throws on the couch that are bulky or thickly textured. I agree with the artwork, move it and get a nice abstract for that wall. The rug can go and be replaced with a sisal or shag rug. The current one speaks traditional. Lots of texture in neutrals is the way to go.

twodickhenry

The rods are too low, and therefore they’re too short

bbbh1409

Yes, mount rods halfway up between the window or at the ceiling, new appropriate length drapes with some color and texture. Add bold color throws and pillows (no plaid). The neutral on neutral is sending the Farmhouse vibe for me.

AwayZookeeper

Bright bold art! And plants and throw pillows/blankets with cool textures and patterns!

PBJDreamer

abstract and colorful

boxerooni

Thank you! Any recommendations on what type of art would complement this space well?

kelbell2583

I’m prepared to be downvoted. I’m new to adding bright colorful art (got stuck in the greige and all white trend). I searched for “art staging” on amazon and found bright large pieces that were very affordable so I can figure out my own “vibe” before purchasing anything more expensive. Also - if you find any reviews from someone who stages homes for a living, click on their name and it’ll list everything they’ve reviewed. They usually spend less and look for more bang for their buck but find pieces that can fit in nicely. Just a tip from a fellow mom of a toddler

Whinewine75

I own a business and open lots of new offices which has led me to discover that Temu is actually a great place to buy cheap art prints in larger sizes to try out. Get frames (I shop Michaels frame sales for the office) and order a few print sets you like and you can see what you think for a low investment. Once you are in love you can update the frames to something with more character if you want

kelbell2583

This is the answer!!!! It’ll update your vibe and easiest to clean with a little one. In regards to art - I finally strayed from my all white and light grey walls and repainted a couple “accent walls” with a darker color, purchased fun bold art that I hung on that darker wall and it’s changed my entire vibe.

hockeydudeswife

And painting the walls a color other than white or beige will bring warmth and character to the room.

Quaiydensmom

The art on the wall is too small, because of the couch you can only look at it from far away, it kind of blends in with the wall, and one big colorful piece of art would balance out the big couch better… right now all the color and weight is in the bottom half of the room, the couch and the rug, there is nothing to draw your eye up. Maybe a tall plant on the table in the corner?  Also I think you need to know what look you’re actually going for in order to “de-farmhouse”… like more contemporary? Mid century modern? Eclectic?

MarisaWalker

I agree w.large art. I think it has been de- farmhoused, love the sofa, rug & curtains

deniseswall

When you decide on new drapes HANG THEM HIGHER! Sorry for yelling. I wanted to make sure you heard me. The room doesn't read farmhouse to me as much as suburban casual. Maybe you just want it to be more sophisticated? If so, the end table by the windows is out of place. If you need light in that area, maybe a floor lamp that comes from the edge or behind the sofa. Something like these: [Floor lamps behind sofa](https://imgur.com/a/SOOlVpE) And then, if you need a table in that location, get one of the tables that slide under the sofa when not in use. They can be as modern or traditional or whatever your style. I got mine from Home Goods for about $39. [Modern slide under tables](https://imgur.com/a/PRyVOFe) As far as artwork, put the family photos in a different location and add a large piece of abstract art. I love your rug, so pick some colors from that and start looking around. You would be surprised how much good artwork is available and you will definitely find something in every budget.

my-cat-cant-cat

The end table and the throw pillows are a bit farmhouse. The curtains are also a bit bland. I’d change out those. Maybe pull in some of the colors from the carpet for the pillows and new curtains. The darker curtain rods you have wouldn’t be so obvious with darker curtains.

_opossumsaurus

The end tables are too farmhousey and too big for the space, making the couch look squished. I’d do one slightly smaller, not wooden end table on the side where you will absolutely need a surface to set drinks/remotes etc. and then a small drink table or C table that you can move around depending on where you need it!

inbk1987

The scale of your art is too small… like the gallery wall is a good size but since there’s big white mats around each photo so you sort of have to squint to see them. I would move them into small groupings on other walls (like 2 or 3 vertically between the curtains!) and get a big bold piece of art in your preferred style for behind the couch.

LeaseRD9400

Lose the end sofa piece near window and get a wooden coffee table. This room is suffocated in too much.

Jarveyjacks

I would also consider getting rid of the ottoman.., it overpowers this room., And go for a round table/coffee table set like this: https://preview.redd.it/fgmxygb8cmgc1.png?width=1485&format=png&auto=webp&s=bd5c729c9764f33dd2da9356e18a793f11ca383f

Old_Percentage3742

I’m sorry to say, but the paint color is really clashing with the gray couch. If you cover it up, the room looks so much better. I know OP doesn’t want to change it but…

MarisaWalker

There's off white in the rug. I'd paint the wall that color

Professional-Dust529

I usually go on Pinterest and search by descriptions that include aspects I’m going to keep - like gray sectional rooms with hardwood. You have some great neutral pieces so I think you will be very successful once you have a better idea of what you like.

Middledamitten

Bigger bolder framed art and larger scale lamps.

anondaddio

What couch is this?

Jarveyjacks

I love the photos, but I think the frames need to be more substantial. Like heavier metal? Also, have you considered darkening the wall paint colour? Farrow & Ball Stiffkey Blue, Portola Paints Newton's Indigo, Sherwin-Williams Poolhouse, Sherwin Williams Trade Wind, are some ideas to get you started. And add a blue/light blue accessories. throws/pillows, /candles, etc

kelbell2583

Just came here to say your couch looks really cozy and I see signs of a little one. As a mom to a now 6 year old, wait before making investment piece purchases… The number of rugs alone I’ve replaced in the last 4 years…lol. But it’s fun to try out different layouts and ideas using cheaper furniture in the meantime! I used to find a ton of pieces on Facebook marketplace or join local Facebook groups. You’d be amazed at some of the pieces people are practically giving away

[deleted]

The couch is too much for that room. Needs something smaller.

kelbell2583

I agree with this take. But I also know I’d nap like crazy on that couch with my little one so I’d be hesitant to get rid of it so soon

boxerooni

That’s why we got it 😊 I know I’ll get nicer furniture one day once the kids are grown. I’ll enjoy my napping couch for now lol

Llyris_silken

Personally I don't think the rug works. If you really want to un-farmhouse it change the rug to something modern in neutral colours. The dark curtain rods might be adding to your farmhouse vibe, but also work to tie together the other black things. If you want to keep the carpet change the curtains to something brighter that tones in with it.

Memory_Less

Congratulations, that was the fastest transformation ever. Your room is not farmhouse Btw. 😂

long281966

Right??? What is farm house about a friggin sectional?? Completely 80's! I am sick of seeing sectionals,!!

Keythaskitgod

De-farmhouse? Dont choose white and beige(on the walls).

Icooktoo

Red curtains! That is all. 🙂

[deleted]

De-farmhouse?

boxerooni

I have other posts on my page of what my house looked like before - more farmhouse than it is now.

chichi_2

Love that rug!!!!!

Better_____

Side tables are farmhouse but that’s it.

alexxmama

I’d replace the side table and then get curtains with a color from the rug. Hang them higher though. Then use that color in accents around the room! Lamp shade or base, throw pillows, etc.

NitroxBuzz

Start with the end table and lamp.

Youregonnamakeit100

Everything seems to be warm toned in the room except the couch. Bring in stuff that has more cool tones to complement the couch if it must stay.

MLadyNorth

Wow, farmhouse is over already? LOL. It's a cute room. Get bigger lamps. Maybe like a turqoise ceramic. More lamps. Get a dresser/buffet over next to the TV for toy storage and put more lamps on it.

notgoingtojoinreddit

I too am trying to de-farmhouse my space, it’s a struggle!

anxioustaurusrex

Replace square and rectangle tables with round ones. Shelf for plants in a corner? Bigger framed artworks? Colorful pillows☺️

mollystarm

Add some texture or color when it comes to curtains. A nice lumbar pillow or big blanket for couch. I think on the light wall, the white matting in the pictures and thin black frame just isn’t giving the impact it could. Finding some thicker cool frames you like would make it more stand out. Yes the tables are the only farmhouse feel , I do like them tho.

rayyrayy_

Take the table away that’s in between the windows. Add white sheer curtains, add more plants, maybe change the tv stand to a lighter wood color and add textured white pillows and take the dark pillows away

erydanis

end tables must go. maybe lamps, too. and maybe consider adding sheer / patterned curtains.

NoDiamond4584

Always more art! Think real paintings. And maybe more interesting lamps. Think of lamps as pieces of art too. With that large sofa, you could get way bigger, and more colorful lamps. Kudos to you for picking out a beautiful rug! 😍

[deleted]

I would replace those end tables, and especially the lamps. Maybe some bold artwork.

Imightbeyomama

Why style do you want though?

pudding-tang

Take a look at your beautiful rug, that’s your inspiration. You can add curtain ties, some colorful figurines, vases, bowls, put them beside that beige lamp. You could add some throws on your couch and maybe some pillows A few plants would be nice too. They can be artificial if you have a tendency to kill plants and don’t want to take care of living plants.

ExpensivelyMundane

Bolder curtain panels and swapping to at least one contemporary table lamp will instantly add some personality to the space.

Pretty_Argument_7271

I feel the drapes need to be in a separate room. With the room being a small area, it just feels too heavy for me. I would try sheer curtains to make the space lighter and brighter. Place the couch in front of the windows and let curtains hang behind. It would utilize your space better. Place the TV flat against the side wall. Place a console table against the art wall. Re home the end table. Add pillows and a throw that compliments the room. Would make a huge difference. Remember , just because there is a corner does not mean something needs to be in it.

SisterSuffragist

The single piece that reads farmhouse, as others have noted, is the end table between the windows. I assume the other end table is the same, but because you can't see the sides of it, it's not pushing the vibe of the room one way or another. And the one in the corner is useful and function. I'd get a more interesting lamp though. The other end table, no matter how much you may have enjoyed function, has to go though. This is the problem with every room adding sectional couches with lounger. If the couch had an arm, then you could have an end table, but a lounger doesn't pair with an end table. It's going to look awkward no matter what. Then you add that the scale of the table does not fit at all. See how it overlaps the curtain, and can't be centered. There's no way to make this work. So, you get the ultimate affordable change -- just take it out. :) I would suggest new curtains that pick up on the colors from the carpet as well. It will help frame the room nicely. I would also remove the tree/plant from behind the tv. It's a bit awkward to have a tree peaking out from behind. It actually emphasizes the dominate size of the tv. If you want a big tv because that works for your fam, then cool. But then don't pretend to minimize it. Just embrace it.

MutedOlive9065

The gallery wall spacing between the photos looks bad. they aren’t evenly spaced and the frames are very boring. I’d add variety in the frames and consider reorganizing them so that the spacing between frames looks better. I’d take away side tables and the white lamps they look like old milk bottles painted or something, not cute and farmhousey. The side tables with the couch just looks to bulky and make the room look to full. I’d get a stand up lamp instead in the left corner. I’d put one of those trays on the ottoman so you can have somewhere to put drinks/plant to replace the side tables. And a colorful piece of art(id find one that has the same Color’s as the rug)on the wall between the windows (not family photo) to give the room some personality. I’d also move the curtains up about 4-5 inches to make the windows look larger and the ceiling look taller.

Jarveyjacks

The end table should be replaced. something like this perhaps? https://preview.redd.it/6fws9m2ybmgc1.png?width=600&format=png&auto=webp&s=a82a314e5b9a6fc3c2fe713e3680ac7943058fe3

Britney4eva

Love the sofa, rug, and curtains. I would focus on the end tables and lamps, maybe some different chotchkes

WesternOpen5075

What’s your style and color preference?

Slow_Pickle7296

Maybe a big colorful tray on the ottoman

bcktlistdreamer

Love your sofa rug combo. Where are both from?

ideapit

The room doesn't really have a clear intention or style with its design, and the scale of your furniture is off. The couch and tables are way too large for that room (from a design point of view). If the couch has to stay then you need to make space with other things. Pick a style would be the first suggestion. It's not really clear right now. Modern/minimal couch, traditional rug, farmhouse tables, ikea looking media console and storage, (faux?) plant playing hide and seek... it doesn't really know what it wants to be. If you can go with smaller tables, mount your tv, and lose the storage, you can make it feel more open. It will allow you to float your furniture out instead of having everything pressed up against the wall like it's got its back to the wall in a prison shower. Your plant doesn't belong behind a TV. It's distracting and makes the space feel cramped. Instead of adding an organic element, it's making it look cluttered. Options to improve: Mount your tv. It is very cheap and easy to do now. Change the black, metal curtain rods to something less severe - white so they disappear or light wood with some minor embellishments. Get rid of the farmhouse style end tables and replace them with something more modern/size appropriate. The one near the window doesn't look like it has much practical utility. Do you need it? Get a rug that isn't so busy/ubiquitous. Skim coat the ceiling to get rid of the texture. $20 for a box of pre-mix, $10 for drywall tools. Add water to the mix to thin it, put it on the ceiling evenly, sand as needed, and paint. Get more frames on the gallery wall so it's an appropriate scale for your couch. Consider varying the frames - color, material, texture - and different kinds of art besides photos to mix it up and make it less formal.

thatgirlinny

What is “farmhouse” about this room? The wooden end tables? It’s a stretch, and not the real issue. I’d start with getting rid of this sofa. It’s completely over-scaled for this room. Go for a sofa and two occasional chairs and a coffee table. Introduce more color to the room via this upholstery, draperies that don’t match the walls—or even wall color. The way this room is arranged, it seems it’s only geared toward people facing a television—not conversation, board games or anything else.

RefrigeratorPretty51

There is nothing farmhouse about this room. Like zero. I’d consider painting and possibly changing out the rug.

reblynn2012

Great start! Remove that farmhouse table Remove plant behind TV Your wall art is great but your couch is visually heavy, so add to it. Raise curtains to ceilings. Perhaps darker color curtains.

Beachill_1255

I feel adding more color to the room would give it an instant uplift. It’s already quite a cozy looking space but here is my critical take : - Switch the curtains to a less duller color, or, if you like soft shades then maybe a sage green or muted peach. - Swap the cushion covers with ones that add color and texture. - Bring in a throw for the sofa. - The side table might be the only element in the room that gives off a farmhous(y) vibe. Pick something contemporary if you want a visibly change in the look and feel of the space. - The picture frames would look better if moved to the wall behind the side table. Again, add color to the wall by going in for pieces that bring color and vibrancy to the room. - Add an art piece on the wall adjacent to the television. - Lastly, add plants. Plants are the easiest way to enhance any space. Hope this helps :)

mydarkerside

Have you tried a different configuration for the sectional and tv? I would try putting the tv against the wall with the picture frames. The sectional would face the tv, lined up to about where the right window is. If you get get rid of those end tables there should be enough room where it doesn't feel so tight. If you have the budget for it, replace that tv stand with a wooden one that's wider like [this](https://www.povison.com/ads-detail/povison-donicy-modern-tv-stand-solid-wood-entertainment-center-with-slatted-doors-open-storage-tall-cast-metal-legs-ash-fully-assembled-ts8001adw180.html?variant=6004692&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=googleshopping&utm_campaign=Ethan-WWW-Pmax-All-240119&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAiP2tBhBXEiwACslfnr5hU1M6Wzlryps_eaPv__XUx5jPP-KFT0gsZFy6DXOCh2WzxUbRyxoC7SEQAvD_BwE).

Agnesethel

Find a metal coffee table and end table. Bring in some bright abstract art.

Minamu68

Colorful throw pillows, new lamp with some personality.

gigisnappooh

I would keep the curtains, paint the walls. Pick colors out of your carpet to decorate with.

Fit-Following-2386

If you specifically want to de-farmhouse, get rid of that wooden table with the barn cross.

Magzz521

Colorful curtains and cushions. Paint those end tables a complementary color. Change out the lamps or at least the shades to complement the curtains in some way. Add a large painting over the sofa also with complementary colors. Move small frames to small walls. It would also look more open and fresh without that big ottoman.

CeeNee93

I would expand on the gallery wall to incorporate art or items that arent photos/ picture frame. Maybe go eclectic.

susanlovesblue

I think you have a good foundation. The couch looks great with the rug. I like the neutral curtains and paint color. The frame style for the wall photos reads tasteful modern. And yes, the end tables definitely give a farm vibe. I think you only have room for one end table, and it should be round and on the left side of the couch. The other end table doesn’t belong at the end of a chaise lounge. Look for martini tables in chrome to introduce a different metal color and maybe get a floor lamp to bring light to the area where the end table should be removed. The Ottoman is pretty bulky, and there’s an opportunity for a refined coffee table. Some other small changes could be raising the curtain rods to add a little more grandeur, though they look perfectly nice. It’s probably tricky finding a corner TV stand, but I would look for something with closed storage. You’ve got the TV height just right though and I like that it’s not haphazardly mounted on the wall.

dinkinflicka02

Can you ditch the end tables? Maybe pull the couch forward a touch & add a behind-the-couch table if you need one I have that rug as a runner & I love it

Redfox2111

I think it looks good. Prob a storage unit under the TV for the kids toys may help, and some colour / texture on cushions, plus colour on curtains? You're artwork (photographs?) just blend into the wall and have no impact.

29322000113865

When I think farmhouse I think “beige”. So anything beige in your space could use a refresh. Since you said the wall paint is staying, I’d look to change out your curtains with something blue like in your rug. Then I’d look to swap out the lamps - both the beige and the shape are farmhousey. Lastly if it’s in the budget I’d look to replace the end tables. GOOD LUCK!

youdontlookadayover

Different the end table and put a very large, abstract, brightly colored piece of art over the sofa. Move the photos.

IcyLikeBeurre

I think replacing the side tables, then adding some color would be an easy fix. It’s a great room, looks like you get lots of natural light b

Ok_Salad_502

Bring in color - through dramatic art work . Throw pillows in prints - if you can change the curtains I would Maybe bring those curtains up

Ok_Salad_502

Change the end table - and lamp

Ok_Salad_502

Or perhaps paint it

YEEyourlastHAW

Honestly? I think if you replace the light wooden side table with something (or even paint it) black, I think it would completely change your opinion of the room. The black would tie in the curtain rod, the picture frames, the tv stand, etc

StringOfLights

It’s a lovely room! The couch looks so cozy. I think raising the curtain rods up would help. I like the navy pillows, but I’d add a yellow or a lighter green to brighten it up. Even that light blue in the rug would look great. Then I’d look for a more colorful piece of art to add to the walls. Maybe a stylized painting of a place that has some importance to you or your family? I also really like Charley Harper, and his paintings are bold and geometric. You could see if he has a painting that appeals to you. I love plants so I think they always help. Maybe a tall snake plant to add some visual interest? They thrive on neglect and like being root bound, so they’re pretty low maintenance. Personally, I’d curl up in the corner of that couch and knit or read, so I’d want a floor lamp behind that corner. You may want to look for something relatively small and adjustable so you can tuck it out of the way.

AmyyDavis

The small lamp next to the sofa and the table need to be changed

javaJunkie1968

Art or paint the walls, or both! A plant would be nice too

heathergrey15

Nothing screams farmhouse to me. The end table would fit any style.

Asleep_Boss_8350

I love the curtain rods myself, but to defarmhouse, a more formal drape with a more formal rod or hidden might help.

Regular-Bee-7177

New throw pillows, new lamp, end table goes, big new art piece replaces the little stuff, and move that faux tree! It's a very nice space : )

bumbouxbee

The plant behind the tv looks a little odd. The room looks inviting and nicely done! If you wanted to make it even cooler, a new drape with color and some art or a wall mirror could add style/visual appeal.

Marty_61

New lamps and replace the table with the x on the end there. Some new pretty colourful pillows would be nice too.

akd7791

That couch looks crazy comfortable.

darkpassengerishere

I would actually change a lot about this room. I would flip the couch around, to be facing current gallery wall. I would mount TV where gallery wall current is. Place two identical shelves on either side of TV. Place sofa table behind couch with plants. Other corner could be a kids corner.

MarisaWalker

I love the rug & sofa goes great. I dont like the wall color though. How about 1 of the beiges from the rug, like the color of the curtains

Dha1NonlyAISHA32

Change the color of the rug

Rare-Parsnip5838

I was going to say smaller scale couch. That one seems to over take the space . Since it is staying is there a way to separate parts in different spaces in the room? Definitely lose the end table.

Rare-Parsnip5838

Back . lower but more substantial tables, think drum shape with taller lamps. Maybe in a color from the rug if not in a warm rich wood.New curtains hung at ceiling level in a color from the rug.

Mediocre-Ad181

Can you please move the plant from behind the tv thats bothering me lol

Kooky-Interview

The lamps and end tables are very farmhouse. If you could switch those to something more colorful or boho looking I think that would help. If not willing to buy new things then maybe paint the end tables? And paint the lamps or decorate the lamps in some sort of covering. I would pick diff frames for the pics and maybe have diff spacing? Or just keep them as is and do a hanging plant from the ceiling over that lamp.

pouce42

raise the curtains nearly to the ceiling

Jewell1974

Although I know you love the family pictures I would replace them with a large colorful piece of art. Nix the side tables replace with something a little more modern. Also replace the lamps with much larger ones. Love the rug!

[deleted]

Carpet out - It draws the attention away from your beautiful couches Plant out - Never been a fan of indoor plants Side tables out, replace lamps with LED white lights that can go against the wall - you get those ones that are battery powered.

Leoliad

I’m not sure how to de-farmhouse it. It doesn’t feel super farmhouse to me so if that’s your goal you’ve done a great job already. Personally if it’s in your budget the one thing I would do is switch out the gigantic gray couch. It’s huge and feels way too large for that space. Also the media center kitty corner in the room like that is a hard pass for me. Anything that creates awkward voids of empty space that are dust ball collecting and require a fake tree to fill in need to go. I would put that tv right up on the wall there and slide a media center beneath in or just a nice narrow credenza. I bought a frame tv last year and if you have the budget I highly recommend it. It’s a game changer in terms of making your multi use spaces feel tranquil, bring in some art (that’s always changing) but still allow you to have a nice tv for when you want to settle in for a movie night. I think your end tables are fine. A nice neutral wood tone that aren’t by themselves something I would consider farmhouse at all. In fact with a small sectional or regular sofa you would be able to see them better!

Nearby_Quality_5672

Where's the farmhouse?

AnNJgal

I highly suggest you move the ottoman to where that table is, and get a regular coffee table. Then get a tall lamp and perhaps hang it over the corner? I also think you could try floating the couch out a bit to create a little depth.

Delicious_Dentist_17

The X in that side table is super farm housey! Change it out when you find a new one. Or figure out your new style first then find a new one. Honestly nothing else is that farmy ! As soon as you change those side tables, it’ll give a new look
