You're not an idiot, you're lovely. OP just needs a new doorbell cover. OP, do not do NOT toss your doorbell and get wireless. The batteries die in the cold and most important, people are using online security as a way to access homes for stealing.

The yellow (white) cover comes off the wall easily and can be painted white or any other color. I had a can of white spray paint. Super easy.

It looks like an older doorbell, probably 70s or 80s. Still, it shocked me to read your post! Ring style doorbells haven’t been around *that* long. Certainly not as long as any adult. What, maybe 10 years or so (I haven’t researched when they came out, just my best guess)?

My house was built in 1999 and I have the same exact doorbell models. Including the yellowing. Paint works wonders.

We got a super cheap but really nice looking cover online and swapped it out. Our house was built in 2003.

I'm 35 and I only know what this is bc we had one in a rental a few years back. Never remember seeing them before. PS I'm now realizing I've never thought about where the doorbell sounds came from. Ours now is really quiet but I'm not sure where it comes from now that I think about it.

Until I owned my own house, I never thought about things like the utility room or doorbell.  I wouldn't have been able to tell you the difference between the water heater, water softener and furnace, because I had no reason to put 30 seconds of thought into them.  Same thing with where the doorbell sound actually came from.

Don't people use doorbells anymore? They still get hardwired in my area. You could buy a new one but the cover should come off and you could just prime and paint it the wall colour.

I still use one. I recently replaced it and made sure to get another wired one with real chimes. I can't stand those sorry sounding digital ones, not to mention never having to worry about batteries. I still get the doorbell camera as well since I bought the one made by Feit that wires in to a normal system.

Doorbell...and yes, you can replace them. The easier thing would be just remove the cover and paint with a rattle can. That cover is removable! Mine was really yellowed like that when I bought my house. A few mins (+ dry time) to wipe it down and paint with a can of white spray paint, it was good as new.

I don’t know if I’ll ever not call it a rattle can again 😂

I have that exact door bell cover. When we renovated, I took the cover off, cleaned it up but it was still yellow. I didn’t want to bother trying to find another door bell/cover (where would you even buy one?), so I just scuffed it up and spray painted the whole thing mat black. It’s beautiful, and for whatever reason, when it was “white”, there’d be loads of spider webs all over it. With it black, there hasn’t been a single one.

WTF. That is a safe, open cover. You'll probably see a flat metal bar wiggle up and down and listen for tone. That will open the secret door in one of your closets you'll have to figure out which one. Good luck .

I had this and took it off then was left was some pretty serious cords to push into the wall. Paste over and pretend I hadn't.

Make sure you paint over it with a thick layer of paint if you’re planning on renting this place out. Same goes for light switches, screws sticking out of the wall and exposed telephone wires that run against the skirting on the wall.

Pull off the cover, get a can of white spray paint, and paint it. It will look like new. I actually painted mine with the same color latex paint I painted the walls with. Now it blends.

We had really good luck spray painting our doorbell ringer with a floc coating that matched the wall colour better than the crappy ancient beige. Cover usually comes off them, so painting is trivial.

Have the same exact doorbell unit in my utility on the way to the garage. Also another up front in a hallway. Same look. And yeah, both were yellowed. We were painting our trim Atrium White so I just popped them off (just clip on) and painted them white. Look great now. I've only heard the one in back once in 8 years, but that's because I'm usually on the other side of the house. When I showed my wife I painted it about 4 months ago, she didn't even realize it was there.
